Some of the best memories I have of Polaroid were of working with Joe. Please accept our sympathies for your loss.

Joe and his wonderful family became good friends of ours during his four years in Ireland. We had many enjoyable times together and truely valued his friendship with us. He was loved by us all and was a kind and gentle person and probably the most sincere person I have ever met in my life, there wasn't a bad bone in his body and he loved his Karen and their family. Joe, you will be dearly missed by us all. God Bless your lovely soul. Bairbre, Owen and Family. Carrickmines, Dublin Ireland.

Joe and I first met in Ireland in 1979 with Polaroid. We had a difficult start but after nearly four years there we figured each other out! He went on to become my manager, mentor and I believe a friend over many years with the company. Joe was dynamic, creative and embraced change. He espoused the values of Dr Land in respecting and supporting his work colleagues. Life was never dull with him.
The last time I spoke with him he was addressing his medical issues with his customary ebullience and determination.
Karen and family we are saddened by your loss of a very special person.
We remember the happy times we enjoyed with you both in Ireland, Spain and Mexico.

Derek and Kathleen Taylor, Beaconsfield, England.

I met Joe at Carnegie Tech in Beta Theta Pi, where we spent a number of years together building homecoming displays, constructing spring carnival booths & buggies, refurbishing the barroom, playing soccer and partying. Joe was a positive force in everything he did, and he brought his "can do" attitude to every endeavor. Fast forward 30 years---I was attending an executive briefing of TQM at the Center for Quality Management in Cambridge MA. And as each stood and introduced ourselves, Joe stood up and introduced himself and then said (as he had also spied me from across the auditorium), "...and I went to school with that guy over there, Warren." Such a great surprise to see him again after 30 years.

30 years ago this summer, I met Karen and Joe to discuss designing a remodel for their Long Island home. From that very first meeting, Joe has always been welcoming, smart, respectful, kind and insightful, as well as appreciative of a good story or laugh. Considering that we subsequently did complicated and drawn out projects on two more houses over the years, where I helped Joe part with large amounts of his money and spare time, I find that fairly amazing.... In challenging times, he was a calm presence, a bridge builder and problem solver. Joe made what could have just been a successful business relationship working on houses every 10 years or so, into 3 decades of friendship instead - I sincerely thank him for that gift.

I was a "C" shift supervisor at Polaroid in Bldg. W-3 when Joe was hired as a Process Engineer. We solved many film manufacturing problems together. Joe enjoyed the teamwork and most of all, getting to know the people on the team.He produced results. I was very proud of Joe when his talents were recognized and he progressed to the position of Executive Vice president. Joe was also very instrumental in making Polaroid a "worthwhile rewarding workplace" with his kindness, caring for people attitude and his results oriented management style. i will always have very fond memories of Joe.

My husband, Bob Walsh, had a strong comradery with Joe. I remember working for Bob, and Joe would stop into Personnel and tell him, "We need bodies!" Meaning Bob needed to get people hired because he wanted them for people on "C" shift . He was smart, happy man. He loved Polaroid and "the family of W-3" was better for it having him. Moving to Ireland had Bob jealous because he wished he would have loved having that job. R.I.P. Joe....I know Bob would be saddened to hear about his passing. Can't help but imagine all the "Family" of Polaroid employees welcoming him.

It saddens us so to hear of Joe's passing. We have fond memories of him and Karen and being part of the Jerry's Point subdivision ...the only such neighborhood on Long Island. Thank you, Joe and Karen, for being such a dedicated couple to enhance our lives on LO. We will miss you, Joe, and we send our prayers and blessings to the Oldfield family. Keeping you in our thoughts and prayers, The Hedge Family
