Dear Janet and family, It is 3:00 am and I just learned from a dream of Alan's passing. Alan was a very kind and peaceful man; very intelligent but never arrogant.

Take comfort in the fact that Alan fought what tormented him like a lion until the very last moment.

Dear Janet and family, I lit a candle yesterday on this site for Alan and now add an explanation of who I am. My husband Steve and I met him in August 1992 on a train travelling from Venice to Padua. We were much the same age ie about 15 years older than our fellow backpackers and struck up a friendship which saw us spending the next week in Venice, marvelling at the Basilica, trying to find affordable meals and generally having fun and good conversations. We were new to travelling and Europe having come from South Africa and I remember Alan was a wonderful guide, humorist and friend. Two years later he put us up for a whole week in Seattle, sharing his home and time with us in a very generous way. We went to fairs with him, and on a march in support of HIV sufferers, and he showed us around the river walks.I always remember his warmth, generosity, humour, and intelligence, and a basic kindness and respect which was very humble. I decided to look him up on Facebook and was very sad and shocked to see that he died just a year ago. My thoughts and love go out to you and your family and I know his candle will burn forever in many hearts. He certainly lit up our travel memories. My email is janed@mweb.co.za. I write from Cape Town at present and on behalf of my husband Steve who is in London at present.
