My husband and I met Al about 11 years ago when he was raising beef cattle on pasture (how weird is that!). I had the privilege of helping him market his beef for several years after that and got to know this person whom, it seems, you couldn't hold down.

Several years ago, when he competed in the decathlon in Seattle, my family got to watch him jump hurdles and pole vault. He was an amazing man.

Dr. Erickson was a keen observer and lively conversationalist. He was never at a loss for words. I'm disappointed he didn't reach the longevity goal he once shared . . . I recall it was well over 100. I know his friends and neighbors will sorely miss Al.

As a fellow official, I will miss your absolute enthusiasm for life, competition and challenging yourself. It was an honor to serve with you in Los Angeles in 1984. Most of all, was the thrill on your face in seeing your grandson vault. I will miss you.
