Bernie and I both attended the UW, doing graduate school work. I got to know him well because we had the same classes while he was there. He was a very special guy, very well liked, and a very good baseball player.

I played high school baseball against both his brothers - Earl, Jr. and Les, and with Les at Everett JC and Western.

I first came into contact with Bernie at North Mercer Junior High. He and Ring Torgerson taught Physical Education there. Bernie was a straight shooter and helpful above and beyond the expected. He took a genuine interest in anyone seeking to improve their physical abilities. If he didn't readily have the answer to a question, he would find out and report back. He was ALWAYS encouraging and supportive. A great guy. RIP Bernie, we are all better for having known you.

So long Bernie. I learned a lot from you.

Coach Averill was a wonderful part of my high school years and was a part of some of the most fun times I had in high school. He was a warm, friendly, caring person who always put the kids first. A very, very good man. Rob Kraft, Mercer Island High School, Class of 1972
