Carol Westerdahl Obituary

Carol WESTERDAHL Passed away peacefully at her home in Des Moines, Washington on March 19, 2008. She is survived by her husband Tom of 43 years, sons Kurt and Brian, mother Virginia Pattison, sister Mary Ann Taylor, grandchildren Ryan and Ashley, and many family and friends who love her dearly. Carol was born on August 29, 1946 in Washington D.C. to Theodore and Virginia Pattison. Living most of her life in the Puget Sound area, she enjoyed the outdoors, hiking and walking, swimming, reading, and her dogs Gracie and Joey. Above all, Carol loved being with her family and friends and taking care of them. Carol retired from Boeing after 23 years working in Human Resources. Many from this community became her life long friends. During a two year struggle with ovarian cancer, Carol was an inspiration to everyone who knew her. The family wishes to express their deep gratitude to Dr. Drescher, Nicole, Betty, and the staff at Pacific Gynecology, and the medical community at Swedish Hospital who cared for her. Memorial contributions may be made to the Marsha Rivkin Center for Ovarian Cancer Research.

The first time I met you we spoke between a partition in our Boeing ‘cubicle’. It was at this instant that I knew you were my lifetime friend. I’ll never be able to find the words to describe what you meant to me, or the years we spent together so I won’t even try. Our unique “You Are My Sunshine” (with me completely out of key of course) or ‘Doe a Dear’ (which I still can’t get right) is a very special memory. You were always there for me with your sweetness, your smile and your cheerful, optimistic outlook. Our friendship is one that comes along only once in a lifetime and you either grab it or you don’t. I’m one of the lucky ones who grabbed it. Naturally, you are part of who I am today and I am so very fortunate and a better person for having known you. There’s no doubt that I will forever and ever miss you my sweet dear friend. I look up in the sky each and every day to see your smiling face.

‘May the road rise up to meet you,
May the wind be always at your back,
May the sun shine warm upon your face,
And the rains fall soft upon your fields,
And, until we meet again,
May Gold hold you in the hollow of his hand’

‘Bon Jovie’ (or is it ‘By Jove’) my dear sweet friend and you know ‘I’ll see ya later’.

CW
Today, April 18th, 30 yrs ago I met you in a hallway at The Boeing Co. I was lost and you were sitting at a desk working. Your smile & humor instantly won me. We became best friends right then. Amazing how turning a corner can make such a difference in one's Life. Thank You for being there at that TIME!

I knew the Westerdahls for almost my entire life. Growing up they were like a second family to me. I don't think it has totally hit me yet that dear CW is gone. She really was like a 2nd mother to me. I know all of her dear friends will be missing her at all of their "functions". As many have said before me, she will NEVER be forgotten but she will be deeply missed. Thank you for all the love, the laughs and everything you did for everyone you touched. To Tom, Kurt and Brian - you will always be family and if you ever need anything you know we will be there for you. Hang in there. Much love.

Tom, you have been so wonderfully supportive of Carol during these difficult times. You and the boys have our sincere sympathy in the loss of a wonderful person. I will always miss my little buddy. Now you have to continue to take Gracie and Joey on their walks. We look forward to seeing you when we return to the Pacific Northwest this summer.

Love to you all,

I will never forget the wonderful times we shared together: all the girls camping trips, slumber parties and birthday parties … she will be greatly missed but never forgotten. I only knew Carol for a short time. She was a highlight of my day when I saw her out walking Gracie and Joey in the morning the last couple of years. My mornings have a big hole now. I wish I would have had more time. I'm deeply saddened and wish I could take away this loss for her family... and the dogs....

I was sorry to hear of Carol's passing. As someone who spent 27 years in HR at Boeing, I knew Carol as a part of the Boeing HR community and always had great respect for her integrity and compassion.

As a retiree of 2 years now, reading Carol's obituary, I am reminded of how precious our time here on earth is.
