Fred Fiedler Obituary

Fred Edward

Fiedler PhD.

Fred Edward Fiedler, PhD, Emeritus Professor of Psychology at the University of Washington, passed away peacefully on June 8, 2017, one month shy of his 95th birthday. He was loved by his family and will be greatly missed.

Fred was born in Vienna, Austria. He arrived in the United States at the age of 16, alone, and worked his way through high school and college. His education was interrupted for military service in Europe during WWII, but after returning in 1945 he completed his undergraduate degree and PhD in four years at the University of Chicago, of which he was a proud alumnus. There he met and married his wife of 71 years, Judith, a fellow student.

He became a Professor of Psychology at the University of Illinois and later at the University of Washington, where he held positions in the Department of Psychology and the School of Business. Best known for his work in leadership, he ran his own research lab to study leadership effectiveness and published extensively. He was a prodigious worker and loved his field of study. He had a great sense of humor. Fred's professional success was a product of his hard work and also of his limitless curiosity and interest in people.

Fred and Judith loved to travel and his career offered him international opportunities to teach, do research, and collaborate with colleagues in universities throughout the world. He passed his love of the outdoors onto his children, taking them on hikes and walks from early ages. Even as his sight and hearing left him, he celebrated his good fortune and the good life he enjoyed in his career and marriage.

Fred is survived by his wife Judith, three daughters (Decky Fiedler, Tory Fiedler and Carol Fiedler-Kawaguchi); seven grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his son Robert, parents, and cousins.
