Jennifer and Colleen,

My family and I are thinking of you in your time of loss. We know that supporting your mother through her illness was a trying time for you, and hope that now that she is at peace, you can renew your own lives.

Kathy was one of those people you like immediately. Was it the warm brown eyes, the ready smile or her soft presence? I met Kathy at Wendy Hinman's reading from Tightwads on the Loose at the Magnolia Bookshop. She was there with her lovely daughter and I noticed how affectionate and playful the two were. Kathy invited me to attend her writing group to see how it ran. And then we sat next to each other at Theo's Wild Mountain retreat, where she told me about her very recent diagnosis. It was and is a shock that such a lovely woman was taken so quickly. In addition to Theo Nestor's timely reminder to her students to "write that book" like Kathy did, I want to remember Kathy by striving to show up as Kathy did - with heart led warmth and friendliness.

I feel so lucky that I got to meet Kathy and work with her on her writing. When I think of Kathy, I think of the word "gracious." After I did a small amount of work for her, she sent me a beautiful little basket of flowers. She inspired me and many others with her can-do attitude and old-world manners. Love to you all you Gehrts. I Know your loss is large. Theo Pauline Nestor

I am so sorry for your loss. Kathy was a wonderful friend. We had such fun at book and food events, pounding the pavement selling books, sharing tips and encouraging each other. We "worked the room" at events," and laughed about it later. She was essential in our writing group, and in the end, Kathy had more courage and strength than anyone I know.
