I did not know Michael, but I visited his resting place today. My sister rests just a short walk from Michael. Some months ago when visiting my sister, I saw a military service taking place in Michael's vicinity. Out of honor & respect for the family, I did not approach at that time, but vowed to return later. I wanted to know more about this fallen hero, and honor him/her if only with my heart & thoughts. Upon returning, I could not identify the resting place of that individual, but I did find Michael's. It was moving to learn that this young man was only 36, and a loving husband & father. Then I saw the small plaster "medallion" that must have been made by Riley for his dad. Being a father of a son, and a son myself, I cannot tell you the heartbreak & humble empathy I felt for a father & son I've never met. I later learned that Michael's funeral service was at the same church in which I was married 22 years earlier.
I was raised an Air Force "brat", but I never served. When Michael joined the US Army, he took an oath that I never took. But here's my oath to him (and you, Riley). I will humbly & respectfully adopt Michael as my brother. I will never again visit my sister without also visiting Michael to pay my humble respects. And I will bring my son, teaching him that true heroes do not seek personal fortune or fame, but humble service.

I hate that you're gone. It's painful. I can't even fathom the pain of your family.

How difficult anniversaries must be. I thank you again for the sacrifice you have made for our country.

You have my prayers and may the Lord comfort you.
