Sr. Edward James, as I knew her in the 60s, holds a special place in my HNA experience. She was a remarkable teacher. Her passion, her energy, and her love for teaching taught me much more than French. Through French class, she brought geography and literature to life and taught me English grammar that stays with me still. I will never forget the subjective tense! But more than anything I will never forget her kindnesses, compassion and patience that taught me more about being responsible than any lecture. She was an unforgettable force! I knew Sr. Nelle at Holy Names/ Seattle (class of "54"). She was my French teacher for one day. We had a "come to Jesus" talk and it was mutually decided that I shouldn't be in her class. I knew right then we would be friends for life! We continued our friendship through the 70s. Due to changes in my life I lost track of her, but never forgot her. I always hoped we would meet again. I was given that chance just a few days before she died. We met again at Mount St. Vincent's were she was recovering from an illness. Seeing her again was so beautiful. It was as if we had not missed a day. As I was preparing to leave she told me her Order was going to move her to Spokane, she was very sad. When I asked when she would return she said she didn't think she would make it back. I felt so sad for her and for me. I knew it was probably the last time I would see my dear friends. She is in a place where she will always be loved and for that I am very grateful. Goodbye dear friend and know I always loved you!

I knew Sr. Nelle as Sr. Edward James when I had her for a homeroom and French teacher in the 60's. She was a wonderful person who always challenged me to do my best in the classroom as well as in sports. Sr. "EJ", as we affectionately called her, never missed cheering us on at our volleyball & basketball games. She will always be remembered fondly when I think about my years at Holy Names Academy. She was an influential woman in my life. As my home room teacher during my sophomore year, Immaculate High School, she made a point to meet my mother and to suggest I should be encouraged to go to college.
Thank you, dear Sr Nelle.
