William Donoghue Obituary

William E. Donoghue

William E. Donoghue, of Seattle, Washington, died January 16, 2017 in Healdsburg, Calif. His name was synonymous in the 1980s with the once-popular money market funds, which he widely publicized through newsletters, conferences, books and television appearances.

Reared by the late Norman E. and Elizabeth Brumbaugh Donoghue in West Chester, Pa., Donoghue earned a B. A.

from Lehigh University and an M.B.A. from Temple University and served in the Delaware Air National Guard. An expert on cash management, Donoghue was owner and editor of Donoghue's MoneyLetter, a leading analyst for "Donoghue's Money Market Fund Average," and author of the 1981 New York Times bestseller William E. Donoghue's Complete Money Market Guide (Harper & Row).

In 1986, he founded W.E. Donoghue & Co., Inc., a Massachusetts-based investment advisory, which handled over $1.6 billion in client and shareholder funds. In 2016, after 50 years in the business, Donoghue retired and sold his majority stake in the firm to Minella Capital Management LLC.

A jazz and blues aficionado, Donoghue was a leading authority on the pioneer blues musician "Sonny Boy" Williamson II and maintained a website devoted to him (www.sonnyboy.com). He also wrote the Williamson biography "Fessor Mojo's Don't Start Me to Talkin'" and the unpublished manuscript "Hiding in the Spotlight: The Untold Story of Sonny Boy Williamson II."

Donoghue is survived by daughter Bonnie Boyd Schwerin of Brooklyn, N.Y.; son William Elliott Boyd of Cherry Hill, N.J.; brother Norman E. Donoghue, II (Peggy) of Philadelphia; nieces Maya and Maggie; and many cousins in Tacoma, Wash. Donoghue's three marriages to Patricia Myers, Jean K. Boyd, and Susan Walker ended in divorce.

Visitation will be held at the Bonney-Watson Funeral Home in Seattle, on Friday, March 3rd from 2:00 to 5:00 pm. A funeral is scheduled the next day at the Bonney-Watson Chapel at 10:00 a.m. Interment will follow at Mount Pleasant Cemetery on Queen Anne Hill.

My sincere condolences to the family and friends of Bill Donoghue. It was a pleasure working with Bill on one of his Sonny Boy projects a few years ago. His passion for music, and in particular, Sonny Boy's genre was inspiring. May he rest in peace.
