Carol Newman Obituary

Carol Newman

Carol Ann Newman passed away peacefully in Oakland, California on October 13, 2017 at age 79.
Born and raised in New York City, Carol was a New Yorker through and through. She was a graduate of The Bronx High School of Science and earned her bachelor's and master's degrees at Hunter College. Carol (Redstone) married Howard Newman in 1960, and they were happily married for 50 years. After living with her family in Philadelphia, Washington, DC, Maryland, and New Hampshire, she was happy to return to New York in 1988 when Howard became Dean of the Wagner School of Public Service at New York University.
Carol & Howard lovingly raising daughters Leslie and Amy, and Carol also taught children with special needs. She showed incredible strength and compassion while caring for Howard after he had a stroke in 2000, until his passing in 2011. Carol and Howard were loving partners, and wonderful, nurturing parents to their children.
Carol and Howard moved to the San Francisco Bay Area in 2004 to be closer to their daughters and new grandson, Jacob. Never too old to make friends, Carol made a wide circle of friends in California, including her "knitting buddies," friends from her caregiver support group, and exercise classes. She had a wonderful sense of humor and was a kind and loyal friend, maintaining friendships for decades. She also enjoyed traveling and had an adventurous spirit, traveling with friends and family to England, Scotland, Ireland, Israel, and Mexico.
A true fighter, Carol battled cancer for nine years, undergoing chemotherapy, radiation, and surgery, as well as clinical trials. Carol found comfort throughout her treatment through yoga, acupuncture, mystery novels, politics, and watching her favorite shows, including every BBC mystery show. More than anything else, Carol cherished visits with grandsons Jacob and Zachary.
Carol was a loving wife to Howard, mother of Leslie and Amy, grandmother to Jacob and Zachary, mother-in-law of Brent and Ruben, sister of Fran and Phillip, and a caring friend to many. She will be missed.
In lieu of flowers, Carol's family suggests donations to the Lazarex Cancer Foundation, which supports patients accessing clinical trials. A Celebration of Life will be scheduled for the late Fall, 2017. http://catchy.link/CarolNewmanMemorial

Dear Leslie and Amy,
Both your mother and father were remembered fondly this past weekend at our 50th Reunion of the White House Fellows. We missed them both so much. My deepest sympathies to you and your children. Betsy

I met Carol in 1965, in a pre-natal class at Pennsylvania Lying In Hospital, Philadelphia. We hit it off, and became friends. Our first daughters were born on about the same date, mine on 11/25/65 (Deborah). I don't recall Leslie's b'day. In 1968, my husband and I moved to the DC area, and our second daughter was born there. I lost touch with Carol, but some years later reconnected when I saw baby Amy, and knew she had to be Carol's. They were living in DC. Skip forward, and Leslie and Debbie graduated together from BCC High School. We lost touch again. My husband and I retired to the Bay Area in 1998. I'm so sorry I didn't know that Carol was in Oakland. Would have loved to reconnect yet again. What strange coincidences. I'm so sorry to have missed her this time.

Although I didn't have a chance to know Carol, I wanted to send my sincere condolences to you. May the God who gives comfort and mercy be with you during this sad time.
