Harlow Henninger Obituary

Harlow H. Henninger

Harlow H. Henninger, age 95, of Stevens Point, WI, died March 13, 2014 at St Michaels Hospital, Stevens Point.

Harlow was born May 28, 1918 to the late Oswald & Lottie (Smith) Henninger in Chili, WI. He graduated from Loyal High School in 1936. He continued his education at Central State Teachers College in Stevens Point, earning his BS degree in 1940. Harlow earned his Master's Degree from UW-Madison in 1946. In 1961, he was a Fulbright Scholar and studied at the Sorbonne in Paris, France.

Harlow served in WWII, 1941-1945. He was a Sgt. in the Army starting in Camp Roberts, CA and Fort Lewis, WA. He served 3 of 4 years in the South Pacific in Australia and New Guinea. He received the Purple Heart and 2 Battle Stars. He served in the Infantry and Finance and finally with special training of units out of Fort Sheridan in IL.

He married Louise Korth on August 25, 1945 at the York Center United Methodist Church near Granton, WI. They were married for 67 years when she preceded him in death in 2013.

Harlow taught history at North High School in Sheboygan, WI for 34 years, 1946-1980. He was associated with the Sheboygan summer playground program for many years.

Harlow enjoyed bowling, golfing, fishing and family camping throughout the United States, visiting many state and national parks. He was an avid reader and sports fan. He closely followed high school sports while teaching, and always the Brewers, Packers, Bucks, Badgers and Pointers; discussing and debating all of them and their stats!

Harlow was a proud member of American Legion Post 83 of Sheboygan, WI, was a Past Commander, and served as the local and county leader of the Legion Oratorical Contest. He was involved in providing tax aid help and belonged to the Retired Teachers Assoc. in Sheboygan. He was the Social Studies Department Chair for many years at North High School, served as program chair and state chairperson with the Northeast WI Convention and state Social Studies Advisory Committee. He was involved at Fountain Park United Methodist Church in Sheboygan as a Sunday School teacher, youth advisor and lay leader. Later in life he was a member of St. Paul's United Methodist Church in Stevens Point.

Survivors include his five children, Howard of Tyner, NC, David (Cathy) of Oconomowoc, WI, Mark (Debi) of Metamora, IL, Alan (Connie) of Waconia, MN, & Jean (Harv) Hayden of Custer, WI. He was quietly proud of the education endeavors of his children and their children. He is further survived by many grandchildren and spouses and great-grandchildren in WI, MN, IL, OH, MA, and KS. Harlow, the oldest of 13 children, is also survived by siblings, Arleigh(Clarabelle) of CA, Harold(Ruth) of TN, Glenn of WI, Luella (Jack) DuBrava of IA and Kenneth of IA.

Harlow was preceded in death by his wonderful wife, Louise on April 23, 2013 and by 5 sisters, 2 brothers, and 1 grand-daughter.

With respect to Harlow's wishes, there will not be a formal funeral, but rather a family memorial in the sweet summer time outdoors with Pastor Howard Hintzman of St. Paul's United Methodist Church. Burial will be in the Pine Grove Cemetery in Loyal, WI. In lieu of flowers or memorials, to best honor Dad's encouragement of education, we ask that you consider ways you can assist a young learner or post high school student's educational plans or contribute to the Wounded Warrior program.
