Julia Brooks Obituary

SHELBY-Mrs. Julia Camp Brooks, 86, of 1715 Carson Road, Shelby, was called home by her heavenly Father on Friday, March 29, 2013, at Cleveland Regional Medical Center in Shelby.
She was born Jan. 3, 1927, in Cherokee County, S.C., to the late Rev. Lucious and Lena Bowden Camp.
Mrs. Brooks accepted Christ at an early age at Shoal Creek Baptist Church and later joined Mountain View Baptist Church where she served in a number of capacities including church secretary, Sunday school teacher, Missionary President, and church clerk. She eventually became a founding member of Golden Ridge Baptist Church where she remained a member for over 40 years. At Golden Ridge, she was a past president of the missionary department, choir member, Sunday school teacher, church clerk, and mother of the church. Mrs. Brooks was passionate about her church and spent much of her life there. She was a praying woman who often quoted the scripture, "As for me and my house, we will serve the Lord."
Mrs. Brooks was retired from Doran Mills. Some of her additional pastimes included gardening and being with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren whom she retired to help rear. She loved her family and always enjoyed getting together with them. Her nurturing spirit extended to her siblings as well for not only was she a sister to them but, a mother as well.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, James A. Brooks; a son, Billy Brooks; four brothers, Rev. J.Q. Camp, Eula James Camp, Thomas Camp, and William Camp; a sister, Ceslie Perkins; great-grandson, Jashawn Brewton; special aunt, Essie Morgan; son-in-law Rufus Walker; and grand-son-in-law, Montrell Haynes.
Left to cherish her memory are her children, Annie Phillips and Iris Walker, both of the home, James Edward "Eddie" Brooks (Karen), and Walter "Bernard" Brooks (Zinnie), both of Shelby; a sister, Ella Camp Watson; a brother, Donald Camp (Nannette), both of Shelby; 11 grandchildren, Julia B. Sewell (Eddie), Octavia "Lori" Dorsey, Shannon S. Walker, Josamuel J. Walker, (Jermica), Felicia "Fleet" Walker, Kammetrice "Nola" Beam, all of Shelby, Joshua R. Brooks (Lashonda) of Kings Mountain, Alicia "Nikki" Young, Dontavis R. Pressely, Tarvaris D. Pressely and Ray'Ana U. Surratt, all of Shelby; 19 great-grandchildren; a "special" daughter, Lisa Bostic of Lawndale; sisters-in-law, Hestentine Ikard of Hickory, Lottie Camp of Charlotte, and Mary Camp of Va.; special sisters-in-law, Ruth Brooks and Linda Ann Brooks, both of Shelby; special nephew, Sherman Brooks of Kingstown; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

I worked with Ms Julia many years ago at Doran Yarn (Buffalo). She was one of the sweetest women I have ever met. I have thought of her many times over the years. My thoughts and prayers are with her family. Kathryn Howard
