RIP
November 7, 2010
I was fortunate to have worked with Shirley a few times during my career. What a wonderful lady and artist she was. She will be missed. RIP Shirley.

Shirley Verrett was the very first catalytic flame of artistry that is an overall part of who I am today. She was one of the first operatic voices I ever heard when I was 20 years old and saw the film "Aria" in 1988. Her singing of The Witch's aria from "Un Ballo In Maschera" still stands as my all time favorite aria from my all time favorite opera. Verrett's Ulrica intrigued me SO much, I couldn't fully relax until I had found and purchased the full recording of Verdi's Ballo in New Haven, CT which eventually led to me pursuing voice study which in turn led to me being an opera singer in my own right.

I met Ms. Verrett on a freezing February night after hearing her sing Delilah to Domingo's Sampson at the Met in 1989. After singing all night, she was incredibly warm and gracious, especially because there was a nice big overly long uncomfortable pause due to me losing the ability to speak upon approaching her. I literally was STUNNED in Shirley Verrett's presence - There she was in a streamlined black velvet evening gown with a mink mini vest draped over her shoulders and her hair completely pulled back into one solitary straight up spike with a diamond broach at the base of her head.

Absolutely Incomparable.

Addio, La Verrett. Moto, moto grazie

She lifted her sails high and traveled the seas greatly! Now she has entered into port to take her place in glory. We are blessed to have experienced her beauty, artistry, and grace. She lives on in our hearts, as do all those whom we love. Sincere condolences to the family.
