Elbert William "Bill" Darrow

Shreveport, LA - Bill Darrow peacefully entered into rest on August 1, 2014, after suffering a brain aneurism last August and a battle with Alzheimer's.

Bill was born on Darien Street in Shreveport on October 26, 1928 and was a graduate of Fair Park High School. He was a U.S. Marine Corps veteran. He attended Louisiana Tech, Centenary College, and earned a BA from Northwestern State College in Natchitoches and his Master of Divinity from New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary. Bill was a retired Baptist minister and educator from Caddo Parish Schools.

Bill was a member of First United Methodist Church, Mithra Grotto, Shriners' Queensborough Lodge, El Karubah Golf Unit, and qualified twice for the Hole in One Club.

Father and mother Ernest R. and Emma W. Darrow, brothers Clarence, Ernest and Charles and sisters Elsie Rymmer and Gloria Stanley, preceded him in death. Bill is survived by his beloved wife of 65 years, Jean Kerr, and two sons, Billy, Uncertain, Texas and Robert, Shreveport, brother Emmette "Lucky," Bossier City, and a host of loving relatives and friends.

Bill touched many lives as a caregiver and teacher. By donating his body to science, he leaves a legacy through medical research and education. At his request, there will be no service held. Memorial gifts may be given to Shriners Hospital for Children, 3100 Samford Avenue, Shreveport, LA, 71103.

Mr. Darrow was a teacher of mine at Arthur Circle. I believe I had him for two years. He was a good teacher. Later in life I saw him over in Dixie Gardens in a golf cart. This has been some 30 years ago and I can't remember why I was in the area. I believe Mr. Darrow lived in the area. My prayers are with his wife & family at this time. No service...???

What a pleasure to have known our friend, Bill Darrow. Chick knew him from their teenage years, living in the same neighborhood, and went all through school together. They loved each other like brothers all their lives. Bill and Jean were our friends and we have enjoyed many, many hours together, going to Grotto, to dances at the VFW, and going out to eat. Jean, I hope that you, Bobby and Billy will always know that we love you, that you are in our prayers, and that if you need us, all you have to do is call. We will miss Bill immensely - - he was always soooooo much fun to be around, always with a big smile on his sweet face. We love you, Bill- - - rest in peace - - - and we'll catch up with you again one of these days !

My uncle, Bill Darrow, was not just a bright light of his family, he was a beacon. He shone with goodness, humor, wisdom and love. All who loved him are better off by knowing him. He loved God, family and country. He knew hard times. He knew good times. He did our name proud. Bill, I am going to miss you. May the Lord bless and keep you.
Jean,Bobby and Billy- my thoughts are with you all for what you are having to give up. My prayers are for you to be comforted in this time of grieving. May you all understand what you have lost and smile because God's love is greater now with Bill in Heaven. Thank you,Bill for being a part of my life. The Final Salute

“Brothers in Arms”, Military men and women down through the centuries, have traditionally exchanged “Hand Salutes” as a sign of recognition and as a way to render courtesy and respect one to another.

This “Hand Salute” is the last that we shall render to Elbert William (Bill) Darrow our “Brother-in-Arms”. To his family it symbolizes the love and respect that we have for Bill. And to Bill it is rendered as a symbol of honor and gratitude to thank him for the devoted and selfless service he rendered to his country Post WW-II while serving as in the U.S. Marine Corps. Bill, we commend you for your honorable service. You are a true patriot, who served with honor and distinction. You upheld the finest qualities of an American patriot warrior: courage, commitment, generosity, sacrifice, love and devotion to family and country. You were a true friend. We bid you a sad farewell. You will be dearly missed from among our ranks. Be at Ease. Rest in Peace.

On behalf of the 1,261 military veteran Legionnaires of Lowe-McFarlane Post 14 of the American Legion and the 233 veterans of VFW Post 2238 in Shreveport, Louisiana, we extend our sympathies and our condolences to Bill's family and loved ones.
