J. Cook Obituary

J. W. "Bubba" Cook Jr.

Shreveport, LA - Mr. J. W. "Bubba" Cook, Jr., 83, passed away on Monday, December 30, 2013, at home after a brief illness. Visitation will be held from 5:00 until 7:00 p.m. on Thursday, January 2, 2014, at Osborn Funeral Home. Funeral services will begin at 1:00 p.m. on Friday, January 3rd, at Broadmoor Baptist Church. Officiating will be Dr. Tom Harrison, of Broadmoor Baptist Church. Interment will follow at Forest Park Cemetery.

Bubba was born on October 1, 1930, in Haynesville, Louisiana and had been a resident of Shreveport for sixty years.

Preceding him in death was his parents, Joseph William Cook, Sr. and Blanche Pope Cook. He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Lois Cook; daughter, Becky Mason and husband, Randy; son, Joe Cook; grandchildren, Brooke Jones, Claire Jones, Anna Claire Cook; brother, James Cook and wife, Ann; and several nieces and nephews. Mr. Cook's favorites were his grandchildren, LSU Football, Lake Claiborne, Woodlawn Class Reunions and the Cook tree farm.

Although a native of Haynesville, Louisiana, he will be known and recognized for countless years to come in every corner of the state of Louisiana for his expertise and dedication to the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS) School Improvement Process. It was this competency that made him one of the most requested and busiest SACS volunteers in the state. Educated in the Louisiana public schools, Mr. Cook received a Bachelor of Science degree in Secondary Education from Louisiana Tech University and left to proudly serve the U.S.A.F. in Germany. After his return from service he continued his education and earned his Master of Education in Administration and Supervision from Northwestern State University; a Plus Thirty from Louisiana State University, Louisiana Tech, and Northwestern; and additional graduate course work from Centenary College and the universities previously mentioned. Bubba Cook, who spent his entire career in the Caddo Parish School System, began teaching at Fair Park High School in 1956, where he spent three years before moving to Youree Drive Middle School for one year. In 1960, he joined the administrative team that opened Woodlawn High School as a new secondary school in Shreveport; in 1970, Mr. Cook was named principal, and he remained in that position until his retirement in 1989. During his twenty-nine year tenure at Woodlawn, Mr. Cook achieved a unique "perfect attendance" distinction: he attended the first 333 football games in the history of the school.

Most notable of all his achievements and talents, though, was the spirit in which Mr. Cook volunteered his time to the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools. Refusing to accept anything except reimbursement for expenses, he devoted innumerable hours to working with schools, amazing all with his diligence and determination to assist each and every school in gaining the utmost from the SACS School Improvement Process. An ardent believer in the benefits of Southern Association, Mr. Cook was, perhaps, the best public relations man for SACS in the state since there are few parishes where he has not served. Mr. Cook never met a stranger and possessed, in addition to his "school sense," the ability to establish the perfect - most appropriate - rapport for school faculties undergoing the school improvement process. His expectations were high, and the review was a thorough one; yet he put everyone at ease, making the SIP not only profitable but enjoyable. This was truly a gift! Since 1971, Mr. Cook was a member of over 130 peer review teams, serving as chairperson for over 100 of these. He also served from 1979-1989 on the SACS State Executive Committee and as Chairman of District IV. Mr. Cook was honored at the yearly Advanc-ED (SACS CASI) Convention in Houston, Texas. This annual distinction is awarded to one exceptional educator from each of the forty-four states that are members of Advanc-ED.

Mr. Cook's other contributions to education are numerous, particularly his support and involvement in the Parent Teacher Association (PTA) in Caddo Parish. Through the years he was awarded their most prestigious honors: the Louisiana PTA Honorary Life Membership; the National PTA Honorary Life Membership; and in 1987, the Educator of Distinction Award, which was presented at the PTA State Convention in New Orleans, Louisiana. In addition, Mr. Cook served on the Louisiana High School Athletic Association (LHSAA) Executive Committee from 1984-1989. He also was President of the North Louisiana Rally Association and Executive Board Member representing Class AAAA at Louisiana Tech University (1987-1989), a Field Representative for the Louisiana Association of School Executives (LASE), and a retired member of the Louisiana Association of Principals (LAP). Finally, Mr. Cook was a member of the Louisiana Department of Education Revision Committee for Bulletin 741.

Pallbearers will be Glenn Hooks, Jere Pyburn, A. L. Williams, Greg Morrison, Dennis Dunn and Skip Bell.

Honorary pallbearers will be his Pi Kappa Alpha Luncheon buddies.

The family requests that memorials be made to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital.

The family would like to express their sincere appreciation to Dr. Kevin Marler, Dr. Chip McDonald and Willis-Knighton Cancer Center and Hospice.

Bubba loved people and people loved him. He knew someone everywhere he went and touched so many lives throughout his career and will be greatly missed.

Not sure what to say?

As a teacher at Opelousas Catholic School, I was deeply saddened to learn of "Bubba's" passing. He helped us so much and made what could have been an unpleasant task an easy one. He was a delightful person to be around, and we all knew how much he loved his family and LSU!! We will certainly miss him. Please accept my condolences.

DEAR BECKY AND FAMILY,
It is with deepest regrets, today I find out Mr. Cook has passed on.
I so enjoyed speaking with him when he come to CSHS, at the post office or if we were just out and about...oh the many laughs.
When Mr. Cook found out Becky and I attended school together as well as our children attending the same schools, it was like seeing a family member each time we would meet. He will be truly missed by many.
I am praying for you and your family....
love you Becky and girls.

I am so very sorry to have just now received the news of Mr. Cook. I can remember the many good conversations we had back in 65 and 66. I will remember them as well as some of his advice. We laughed much more than we were serious. I went back to Woodlawn once or twice to see him, and we always ended up talking about the students or football. Like so many other students, I will remember Mr. Cook for who he was. He was my friend and I will always think of him when talking about the Old Days at Woodlawn. To his family and friends may you remember the good times. James O. Pigue' WHS 66

Our memories of Mr. Cook are many, however one stands out much more then others. When we lost our son, he wrote us a letter that we treasure still today. In that letter he shared some things about our son that we also saw in his life. His life was and is his legacy to all who cared. We pray that you can know he was not afraid to show others he cared about what they were going through. May God send you all his peace at this time of loss.

MANY YEARS AGO, MY PATH CROSSED WITH MR.COOK AND FROM THE FIRST A WONDERFUL FRIENDSHIP WAS FORMED AND FROM THAT A GREAT WORKING RELATIONSHIP THAT LASTED FOR MANY YEARS. It seems we've lost the heart of the Castle with the passing of Mr. Cook. Thank you for your love of youth, education, and the paths our lives took following graduation as well. Certainly a friend to all, even in discipline it was for the betterment of the student. What an honor to say that such an outstanding education warrior of our free public schools was a friend; for you see, J.W. was ever working to improve education for all, not just those privileged to walk the hallowed halls of the Castle. Rest in peace Bubba, thank you for taking us on a journey that we can all be proud to say was directed by a valiant and true Sir Knight.

Our Great White Knight the hero!!

No one will ever be able to fill his shoes or wear a White suite with such style and grace. As most of us who were under the guidance of Mr.Bubba Cook know just how special he really was, and how special he thought each of us were. He was a mentor, a friend and a very special unique man who truly touched the lives of so many people.
He made sure we had some of the best times in our life at Woodlawn. He always thought the people at Woodlawn were special and even though we all came from different molds we all had a special bond that differed from the other schools around and that I feel was because of him and the love he had for us all and the school.I come from a long line of students that were at Woodlawn, from 1970-1989 a member of the Donaho family was there.Woodlawn really hasn't been the same since he retired in 1989. We all know especially me if it hadn't been for his caring and desire to see you prosper I would not have ever walked the stage, he even had me sing at our graduation which he personally made sure I achieved.

He holds a very special place in my heart, as I know he does in the hearts of so many others in this town.
To us a Legacy of his time and I'm proud and blessed to have been a part of his journey.
Thanks for the time and the love given. It didn't go unnoticed.
With Great Gratitude and Appreciation.

Below is an email I sent to Mr. Cook on Dec. 12, 2013. I am so happy I did this and hope Bubba got to read or hear it read before passing on. Much love to you and your family ol friend!

Bubba,

Seems strange calling you "Bubba" after all the years only thinking of
you as MR. COOK. I have always know of you as a "Good Man" being a
valuable leader and supporter of the 63 class at Woodlawn. It didn't
become apparent that you are a "Great Educator" until a few years after
graduation in 1963 when I began to understand your methods of
discipline and how they were now affecting how I was living my life.
And in the recent years, to all that know you from our class, you are
known as Bubba Cook - FRIEND.

Not until recently did I know that you have been a special friend to
many of our classmates both in social events and to some, a mentor in
education. All I can tell you is that I always had and will have the
utmost respect for you and that feeling has strengthened during the
last couple of years I have been back in the Shreveport area seeing how
you are loved by so many people.

My prayers are with you for a successful fight with cancer and my hope
is that God still sees your influence over all that you know, and he
will give you more time on earth to continue the job laid before you,
taking care of "US".

God speed to a healthy recovery my New Friend!

Sincerely,

The Final Salute

“Brothers in Arms”, Military men and women down through the centuries, have traditionally exchanged “Hand Salutes” as a sign of recognition and as a way to render courtesy and respect one to another.

This “Hand Salute” is the last that we shall render to J.W. (Bubba) Cook, Jr. our “Brother-in-Arms”. To his family it symbolizes the love and respect that we have for Bubba. And to Bubba it is rendered as a symbol of honor and gratitude to thank him for the devoted and selfless service he rendered to his country while serving in the U.S. Air Force. Bubba, we commend you for your honorable service. You are a true patriot, who served with honor and distinction. You upheld the finest qualities of an American patriot warrior: courage, commitment, Generosity, sacrifice, love and devotion to family and country. We offer our sympathy, prayers and profound gratitude to the Cook family.
