Steven Flood
Lifelong Islander, always thinking of others
Steven Flood, 56, a life-long Islander born and raised in Westerleigh, passed away peacefully on Thursday, July 5, 2018, after a two-decade battle with multiple sclerosis.
Steven attended St. Rita's grammar school, and graduated from Port Richmond High School, where he played basketball and baseball. He went on to put himself through St. John's University, where he graduated with a BA in psychology before working full time while earning his master's degree at night.
Steven worked for New York State as a psychologist before the disease forced his retirement. He battled for years against the MS without ever complaining or feeling sorry for himself. Quite the contrary, as friends and family were always greeted in his room at Clove Lakes Nursing with the same questions, "How are you feeling? Is everything ok with you?" Never a word about himself.
Steven was known for his quiet, loving personality, and he never lost those qualities throughout his battle, as he handled each and every day with incredible dignity and grace.
Steven was predeceased by his parents, John and Olive Nugent Flood, and his brothers, Joseph and John Jr.
He is survived by his brothers, Kevin, Brian, Lawrence and Glenn; nephews, Jonathan and Joseph Flood; nieces, Brienne Warren, Stefanie Cortes and Megan Flood; grand-nephews, James Warren and Henry Cortes, and grand-niece, Norah Cortes.
The family would like to thank the staff of Clove Lakes Nursing Home for their loving care for many years, with a special thanks to Steven's aide, Ahmed Hamza, who became his friend and treated him like a brother.
Friends will be received on Sunday, July 8, from 3 to 6 pm., at Cherubini McInerney Funeral Home, 1289 Forest Ave., Staten Island, N.Y. 10302. A chapel service will be conducted at 5:30 p.m. Private cremation to follow.

My heartfelt condolences to Steve's family. I went to St. John's University with him and he was a great guy. Every morning he had a big smile and it stayed all day. I don't remember him ever in a bad mood or even just tired or cranky. He was someone I thought about through the years and always meant to get in touch with. I'm very sorry I didn't. He is in my prayers. We have lost one of the good guys.
