AUBURN, IL - Russell Westerfield, 72, formerly of Springfield, died Friday, July 18, 2014, at Auburn Nursing and Rehab Center.
Russell was born July 18, 1942, in Springfield, the son of Daniel Lawrence and Esther Fleagle Westerfield.
He was a veteran of the U.S. Army serving in Korea during the Vietnam War and received the Soldier's Medal for Heroism from the President of the United States. He worked for many years cleaning businesses. He was a devout Christian and loved his church. He was a member of First United Methodist Church.
He was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Steven Westerfield; and one nephew, James L. Westerfield.
He is survived by three sisters: Anita Westerfield, Lela Westerfield and Alicia Reed, all of Springfield; two brothers, Larry Westerfield of Decatur and Lee Westerfield of Lincoln; and several nieces and nephews.
Memorial services will be at 11:30 a.m. on Wednesday, July 23, 2014, at First United Methodist Church with Pastor Nicole Cox officiating. Burial will follow at Camp Butler National Cemetery where the Inter-Veterans Burial Detail will conduct honors.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to: First United Methodist Church or Animal Protective League.
