It was wonderful to know Sqeekie. He came by our house three times a week to deliver milk. We had no idea what his name was, but we called him Sqeekie because the brakes on the truck squeezed when he stopped by for deliveries. He was so nice and friendly. One day in the summer--it was in the late '50's, he came by on his route, and we pressed him into service. Our cat had gotten in behind the blades in our air conditioner when it was off, and when it went back on, it got a piece of her tail. We had been looking for her all morning, and my mother found her back behind the blades when she was doing a little gardening. He stopped what he was doing, took the air conditioner apart, got the cat out, and then put it back together again. We rushed the cat over to Coble's, and he sewed up her tail, and we took her home the next day. Totally heroic. We talked about how he helped us for years. In the 60's he finally told us his name, when he realized he had bragging rights about his son Gary, who was a star basketball player at Franklin. Then we knew him, no longer as Squeekie, and not even, Mr. McClanahan, but as Gary's dad. Then we saw him at the games, and that was fun, too. He was forever our hero for his faithful deliveries and for also saving our cat.

It was an honor to know Walt. His warmth and kindness radiated from his smile...making it impossible not to smile yourself when in his presence. Sending you our love and prayers, Bettie, Steve, Annie and Aiden. We will miss you, Walt!

Love,
Amy and Griffin
