I went to work for Dan in June, 1965 at Shakey's in Lakewood, Wa. Dan offered me a partnership(pay it forward), and on Halloween night in 1967, we opened our first Shakey's in Burien, Wa. It was just the 2 of us, and we were over run with customers! Our partnership with many Shakey's, real estate, food distribution, and construction continued for 17 years when Dan chose to retire. I continued on in the business applying many of the principles that I had learned from Dan. Once, when a "politician" offered us "special considerations" in exchange for $ contributions, Dan ordered him out of the Parlor! In Alaska, a building inspector asked for cash so we could open for business. Dan kicked him out! A woman who worked in our office, showed up with bruises on her face, one too many times. Dan called the husband and "invited" to meet with him. No more bruises! Dan was "old school", where your word and handshake was a contract. As neighbors at Lake Chelan, I will miss listening to Dan "solving" world problems. Ann, we will toast and roast Dan at the Lake this summer. Our sympathy to you and your family.
