RICHARD WOODRING Obituary

Richard "Woody" Woodring, 85, a longtime Sedro-Woolley resident, passed away on Sunday, March 10, 2013 in Lakewood, Washington.

He was born on September 1, 1927 in Granite Falls, Washington, the son of Richard & Alice (Ammons) Woodring. The family later moved to the Utopia area east of Sedro-Woolley and there Woody was raised and attended school.

In the early 1940's he went to work to help support his family, working in the woods.

On January 7, 1956, he was united in marriage to Flora Stafford in Sedro-Woolley, and there they made their home and raised their family.

Woody was a heavy equipment operator in the construction industry for over 50 years. He operated road graders, bulldozers and back hoes traveling around Washington and Oregon building roadways and preparing building sites. He had been a member of the Operating Engineers Union Local 302 for over 50 years.

In his younger days leisure time found Woody working on race cars and driving in demolition derbies; and he was one of the original partners that started Skagit Speedway back in the early 1950's. He also enjoyed going hunting and camping, especially at his property in Winthrop, and tending to his gardens in Winthrop and Sedro-Woolley.

Woody is survived by his wife of 57 years, Flora, at the family home in Sedro-Woolley; his daughters and their husbands, Liz & Larry Metcalf of Sedro-Woolley, Kathy & Stan Petersen of Lynnwood and Laurie & Gary Van Pelt of Sedro-Woolley, and his son, Duane Woodring of Lewistown, MT. Eleven grandchildren, Leon, Michael, Molly, Kelley, Becky, Mandy, Carrie, Amanda, Brad, Charles and Adam and four great-grandchildren, Ty, Josh, Adrian and Donnie; his sister, Doris Walker of Sedro-Woolley and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents and by a son, Charles Woodring.

Graveside Services will be held on Friday, March 15, 2013 at 11:00 AM at the Hamilton Cemetery. A fellowship gathering will follow at the Sedro-Woolley Legion Hall.

Arrangements are under the direction of Lemley Chapel, Sedro-Woolley.
