David's classmates from South Africa more than half a century ago wish to extend our sympathies to his family and friends. He was a wonderful person and we are proud of all that he achieved in his life and the contributions he made to the world.

David embodied both the art and the science of medicine. One of the most inspirational, caring and compassionate doctors I have met. His great ability to engage, motivate and listen to people in all of the professions involved in the care of neonates and their families was exceptional. A wonderful man who will be much missed. My thought and love are with Cheryl and the family at this difficult time.

David was a distinguished man of great intellect and creativity. Charming and witty. I always loved the work we did together on various committees and reviews. He understood midwifery as a public health strategy and the role that midwives could play in improving maternity services across a range of settings. He was unique. We already miss him and his wise advice.
