That photo of Michael looks like one that was taken in July 1977 when he was playing for Yeppoon Eagles and I was the player manager. I always remember that I had to go home to Ireland and he asked me in his Year 11 history class in Yeppoon High School if he could write the report of the match that weekend for the Capricorn News as he wanted to be a soccer reporter after he finished high school. The local editor asked me when I returned if I had written the report as he had noticed a different style. I told him in school if that was the way he wanted to go then he should check out Hugh McIllvanney of The Observer. When I met Michael in 2006 he told me that he did meet Hugh at a World Cup. We did meet up a few times since and I always enjoyed his company and he still had that passion for The Eagles and Australian Soccer.
Goodbye Michael

I didnot know Mike but knew of him through a mutual friend and knew he was a great man and journalist. My heart goes out to his wife and children as we share the experience of a beloved husband father & friend taken too young, too soon.My late husband, like Mike, was a fine journalist and passed away of same illness at similar age almost 11 years. My condolences.

I worked in the editorial area of Fairfax and got to know Michael. We shared many chats over our love of the football game called soccer. Coming from a Croatian background where soccer is always discussed we had many discussions over he good, the bad and ugly times experienced in the glory days of Sydney United versus whoever.
I was shocked and saddened to hear of his death from cancer. My thoughts go out to his family. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him, especially his work colleagues.
