In the summer of 2001 I was teaching a computer keyboarding class on Saturday mornings at local 32BJ on 6th Ave. Sonia Ortiz was one of my students. She used to bring her young niece Melissa with her and asked if that would be okay with me. It was against the rules but I knew Sonia wanted to impress upon Melissa the importance of education so I let her stay. During my time teaching at 32BJ, I had many students. Sonia was one who stood out. Upon meeting her anyone could see she was full of love and had a passion for living. The way she carried herself, made everyone around her want to be a better person. She was a leader in class without trying. She was rare and special and when the class was over she asked what I would be teaching next. I told her and hoped she would be in my class again.
I live in Iowa now. When people here ask me about 9/11 I don't say much but I make sure to tell them about Sonia Ortiz. I will never forget her. God bless her and her family.
