Harvey Feiwell Obituary

Nov. 18, 1927 - Jan. 4, 2013
SOUTH BEND - Harvey Aubrey Feiwell, age 85, of Bloomington, IN, died Friday evening at his residence. He was born in South Bend, Indiana, on Nov. 18, 1927, to Rose (Cohen) Feiwell and Joseph Feiwell. He graduated from Central High School and Indiana University and was well-known for his cheerleading skills at both schools. He took additional training at Purdue University and the University of Denver. Mr. Feiwell holds Bachelor and Masters degrees along with further extensive training in Speech Therapy & Audiology (with a minor in Psychology). While he began his career as a member of a local school system in California, he spent approximately 50 years in Detroit, Michigan, and the surrounding suburbs as a speech and hearing pathologist. He was one of the first to establish and maintain a thriving private practice while also serving on the staff and as a consultant to Detroit area hospitals. He was active for many years in the American Speech and Hearing Association and a past president of the American Academy of Private Practice in Speech Pathology and Audiology. He retired to Bloomington approximately seven years ago. Mr. Feiwell's interests included world travel, especially the world cruises he took. He was also an active supporter of Indiana University's basketball and football programs. In addition, he supported the Indiana University international program responsible for sending American students abroad to study. He is survived by his sister, Anita Feiwell Boorda of South Bend, Indiana; his niece, Patricia Boorda Rice, and her husband, Alan of Maryland; his grand-nephew, Jeffery Rice of Germantown, Maryland; his first cousin and his wife, Sheldon and Erma Cohen and his family of Memphis, Tennessee; and first cousins (once removed), Max Cohen and his family, Elizabeth Cohen and her family, Barry Cohen and his family, and Brett Cohen and his family. Mr. Feiwell was preceded in death by his parents, maternal grandparents, Anna and Phillip Cohen, paternal grandparents, Sophia and Moses Feiwell, and one nephew, Gary Michael Boorda. Services will be held in the chapel at Hebrew Orthodox Cemetery in Mishawaka, IN, today at 12 noon, with Rabbi Barry Cohen officiating. McGann Hay, Forest G. Hay Chapel in South Bend, is entrusted with the arrangements. To send condolences to the family log on to www.McGannHay.com.
