Alice M. Van Poppel Feb. 18, 1916 - April 22, 2014 MISHAWAKA - Alice M. Van Poppel, 98, passed away at home, the home she was born in, on Tuesday, April 22, 2014. Alice was born on February 18, 1916, in Mishawaka, as the daughter of Henry and Zulma (Bekeart) Van De Putte. She was preceded in death by her parents; three brothers, Oscar, George and Richard Van De Putte; a son, Dennis Van Poppel; son-in-law, Jeff Gast; and a great-granddaughter, Delisa Brown. On May 20, 1939, in Mishawaka, as Alice M. Van De Putte, she married Cyriel Van Poppel. He preceded her in death on March 29, 1973. Surviving are two daughters, Andrea (Jeffrey) Butler of South Bend and Mary Ann "Babe" Gast of Mishawaka, and a son, Jeffery (Deborah) Van Poppel of Mishawaka; daughter-in-law, Sue Ann (Carl) Heiser; 14 grandchildren, 20 great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren. Alice was a member of St. Bavo Catholic Church. She was a cook at St. Bavo and worked for School City of Mishawaka for four years and Wheelabrator for five years. Alice enjoyed playing cards and being with family and friends. Visitation for Alice will be today, April 24, from 3 to 8 p.m., with a Rosary at 7:30 p.m., in Hahn Funeral Home, 505 W. 8th Street, Mishawaka. A Mass of Christian Burial will be on Friday, April 25, at 10:00 a.m., in St. Bavo Catholic Church, with Rev. Barry England officiating. Burial will follow at Fairview Cemetery, Mishawaka. Memorial contributions may be made to St. Bavo Catholic Church, 511 W. 7th Street, Mishawaka, IN 46544. I am so sorry to learn of Alice's death. My sympathy to your entire family. I have fond memories of Alice. She was always so very kind and we know heaven has welcomed a very special person. God bless and comfort you.
