Nov. 5, 1928 - July 3, 2013 SOUTH BEND - Frederick J. "Jack" Sonneborn II, 84, passed away July 3, 2013, after a short illness. Born November 5, 1928, in LaPorte, IN, he was the son of the late Frederick J. Sonneborn I and Gertrude A. (Uhlemann) Sonneborn. Jack moved to South Bend in 1939. On October 28, 1950, he married the love of his life, Bernice P. Keb. She survives. He is also survived by two children, Frederick J. Sonneborn III and Rebecca L. Womer, both of South Bend; three grandchildren, Pamela J. (Joe) Wilfing, Sara L. (Jason) Hawn and Elizabeth A. (Dan) DeMeester; and four great-grandchildren, Hendrik "Rudy" Wilfing, Olivia Wilfing, Julia Hawn and Little D. DeMeester. Jack retired from the post office after 36 years. He was a member of the National Association of Letter Carriers #330; R.E.A.C.T; and was a founding member of the South Bend Cruise Club. He proudly served in the U.S. Army at Fort Rucker in Alabama and in Japan during the Korean War. He was a big Notre Dame fan, being a season ticket holder to the women's basketball games, and enjoyed football and men's basketball. He also liked airplanes, race cars and motorcycles. Most of all, he was a family man. He loved spending time with them and found a way to make them laugh, even in his final moments. By his wishes, he will be cremated and a celebration of life service will be held at a future date. Memorial donations may be made to the AutismSpeaks.org, or to the charity of the donor's choice.
