SOUTH BEND - Rita A. Lopinski, 67, a lifelong resident of South Bend, IN, passed away at 8:40 p.m. Sunday, January 6, 2013, in Hospice House. Rita was born on March 25, 1945, in South Bend, IN, to the late Chester and Helen (Matelski) Lopinski. She spent her entire career at the South Bend Medical Foundation, and retired in 2007. Survivors include two sisters, Lucy LeeVan of South Bend, IN, and Susan (David) Sanford of Saginaw, MI; two brothers, Raymond Lopinski of South Bend, IN, and Leonard (Sue) Lopinski of South Bend, IN; her nieces, Michelle LeeVan of Waterford, MI, Alexis Sanford of Kalamazoo, MI, and Nicole Sanford of Chicago, IL; her nephews, Michael LeeVan of South Bend, IN, Steven (Christa) LeeVan of Granger, IN, Greg LeeVan of South Bend, IN, and Ryan Sanford of Grand Rapids, MI; and several great-nieces, great-nephews, aunts and cousins. She was preceded in death by her parents, niece, Margaret LeeVan Andrie, and brother-in-law, Robert LeeVan. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, January 12, 2013, in St. Hedwig Church. Burial will follow at St. Joseph Cemetery. Those attending the Mass should meet directly at St. Hedwig Church on Saturday. Friends may call from 2 until 8 p.m. Friday in the Kaniewski Funeral Home, 3545 N. Bendix Drive, where a parish Rosary will be prayed at 4:00 p.m. Rita was a member of St. Hedwig Parish, St. Hedwig Altar and Rosary Society, and Z.B. Falcons. Rita was a graduate of Washington High School and received her bachelor's and master's degrees from Indiana University. Rita loved her pets and had a soft spot for all animals. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. Hedwig Church, Center for Hospice Care, Pet Refuge, or to the charity of your choice. We have some great memories of Rita. Though often times it was too long between visits, she made us feel so welcome and so loved every time we saw her. Truly a great heart and we will miss her dearly.
