Dear Mrs. Schmitz and family,

I learned this news while I was attending this year's AIChE annual meeting in San Francisco. In fact, I was hoping I would have met Dr. Schmitz at the meeting.

Dr. Schmitz was the best teach I ever had and I learned all know from him. He was so patient and helpful guiding my research that the basic knowledge I gained is still relevant today. Also, I really treasured those visits to your house during the holidays while I was a graduate student at UI. I still remembered a copy of Jan's letter sent to President Nixon at 10 and a signed picture of Babe Ruth hung on the basement wall where we played pingpong and had the delicious food you prepared. You hospitality really meant a lot to us when we were so far away from home!

Please accept my deepest condolence and take a good care of yourself and the family.

Dear Mrs. Schmitz and Family:

I just heard the news from Min Chang. I am very sad and surprised. If was my privilege to be his graduate student from whom I learned not only chemical engineering but also how to be humble and a good teacher. All stuck with me all my life. I also learned baseball from him. He had a great family, a happy and most successful life and, most importantly, he was the greatest teacher I ever had. I will always remember the good time we had visiting your home. Please accept my deepest condolence. Take good care of yourself.

Dear Ruth and Family,
It was a pleasure to know Roger. He was a wonderful colleague when I came to Notre Dame. He was so supportive and compassionate. We also had fun times attending the bowl games with you. I am so glad I got to work with him. He was an inspiration.

Ruth and family -
I am so blessed to have met you, Roger and a few of your daughters. I'm glad that Joy called our company to help you out with the trials and tribulations that Roger has gone thru in the last few months. I could feel how strong the family love was for you and Roger thru the phone when Joy called. All of you, including Roger, battled this disease with grace and dignity and such a great attitude- but I also know that God has been with all of you thru this ordeal. I am truly sorry for your loss and hope that you will remember all of the good times your family has shared with Roger. Here's something I that was shared with me when my father passed: A Father's Love - A father is respected because he gives his children leadership, Appreciated because he gives his children care, Valued because he gives his children time, Loved because he gives his children the one thing they treasure most - himself.

Love,

Ruth and family,
We are so sorry for your loss. We remember him well, and the kindness he showed. We are visiting California right now, but our prayers are with you.
