Randy,
Many years have past since I left South Bend but I have fond memories of you and your parents. I'm one of a very select group to have performed on stage with both you and your dad (IUSB and SB Press Club). I want to share an encounter that I had with your dad last January. I was in town and I ran into him at the dedication for the new South Bend Civic Theater. We exchanged information about how our lives had changed in the last twenty-plus years. I asked him if he was still living in the same house. His eyes sparkled and he told me about sharing the house with his family. He was so happy telling me about it. We agreed that it would make a great sitcom.
My dad has lost a good friend and we are grateful for having known your father.
My thoughts are with you and your family,

Jason, our condolences on the loss of your father.

To Rolands Family and Friends I only met Roland a couple of years ago and yet feel I knew him well. We enjoyed eating apricot bars from Country Bake Shop and discussing the news and views of the day. My family and I will miss you very much. Looking forward to those times again in heaven.

Lori, Randy and Jason,

Your Dad was one of the first people I met upon coming to South Bend as a Tribune reporter years ago. Roland and Joyce were wonderful friends of my late husband, Carlyle (Bunny) Kavadas, and me for many many years. I have fond memories of the Golden Days of the WSBT newsroom and the Glory Years of the South Bend Press Club Hoaxes.

Jason, your obituary was perfect – that WAS Roland. I could hear him (and of course Joyce) laughing when I read it.

My husband, Bill Shephard, and I were moved by the warm remembrances of your Dad at the funeral. “Let There Be Peace on Earth” was a fitting tribute to him. Earth will never be the same without Roland and Joyce.

To all the Kellys,
I just wanted you all of you to know how sad I was to see that your Dad passed away. He and your mother Joyce were good friends from my Hoaxes Days. I can still hear your Mom's infectious laugh and I enjoyed your Dad's sense of humor (obviously, Jason, he shared that with you. Your words about him were perfect). We all recognized Roland was small in stature, but he was a GIANT in everything he did in life. You can be sure Roland and Joyce are the life of the party and are making my Mom and Dad-in-law laugh and laugh in God's Kingdom.

Dear Laurie,Randy and Jason, Wouldn't it be wonderful if all of our Parents left such a feeling of sorrow to all who knew them when they were taken as yours were. It is a testament to their love of each other and to all that matters

Who will ever forget Uncle Roland and Aunt Joyce? They truly lived and loved. Laurie, Randy, Jason, and all the family...I fell your pain.

Kelly Family,
For well over half a century Roland was the catalyst who kept the Notre Dame class of 1950 together. A truly wonderful classmate who will be sorely missed by all of us.

Roland was truly a beloved gentleman. I have known him and his family for many years and always ask about him when I come back to South Bend. He will be sorely missed by many. God Bless.
