Dad,

Happy 87th Birthday! Please see a poem for you.

First there was my Father and Mother.
Then there was me my sister and brother. We would take most years three days at the beach. Church on Sundays, pool trips, visits to relatives in New Jersey. Admonishments and tears when deserved. Being told sternly in a loving way We're going into a restaurant now please no yelling and behave." Little faces would upturn puzzled by all the concern. Dad you would be 87 on May 29 this year. We all miss you and know that Heaven is rejoicing you have joined the chorus there! And as you would put it That sounds swell!

Dear Dad,

Baltimore has experienced recent riots over the death of a young man in police custody. Things are starting to quiet down after days of pillaging and looting. We had to leave work early on Monday due to precautionary measures. I am sure you remember similar times in the sixties when you worked at Coppin State College. You are definitely in a better place! I hope May brings kinder, quieter days here in the Northeast and everywhere.

Love,

Julie

Dear Dad,

This candle is to honor your memory one year after your homegoing to Heaven. It is not really any easier even a year later. Some people say it will take a few years for me to feel better. Heaven is a place I look forward to going to, we will see each other again.

Love,

Julie

Dear Dad,

One of the poems I wrote for you a few months back. It can also be sung!

The Daddy Shuffle

Da di da di da di dooooooo
Da di da di da di dooooooo
Da di da di da di dooooooo
Da di da di doooooooo
If you tried to paint a picture
I'd be shuffling along
Almost like I'm doing a waltz
With an imaginary partner, oh
It's my daddy daddy doo
As we're gliding along
In step with each other
It's the Daddy Shuffle poem, dance song.

Love,

Julie

Dr. MacFadden and I read and discussed poetry alongside each other in a monthly group formed for the purpose. This was profound pleasure; we both loved the art so that we naturally developed an affection for each other. I can see him holding the text close to his face for his failing eyes to decipher. A good soul in love with the word.

My prayers will be with Julie and the rest of his family who surely know in large ways the goodness I got a glimpse of.

Dad,

In honor of your birthday coming up on May 29 I have written a poem for you.

"He was born into the world and
At around the age of eight, he developed a love of books that fed his intellect.
He grew to be the head of his class in high school after college he studied for his doctorate.
Although he was buried in thought my mother sought him out.
From there it was marriage and parenting challenges.
A teacher, he took on college no doubt.
And year after year he modeled regalia and cheered on graduates.
I looked up to Dad; he came home each night with a huge long briefcase big enough to hold a child. It was chock full of papers and notes from his classes. Not one of his students ever felt neglected.
Literary, language, grammar in stride.
I felt a little, no a lot in awe most of the time.
It's an ongoing story although he is gone
He lives on in my memory I read his writings eagerly.

Love,
Julie

Dad,

Words cannot express my loss. You were a great Dad, friend, conversationalist especially of those things Biblical. You were also a wonderful Grandfather to my sons. I have missed our Sunday afternoon chats. I will write more another time. Love, Julie
