Jennifer teacher Obituary

Jennifer Elizabeth Jones, 39, a sixth grade teacher with the Woodbury City Public Schools, died Wednesday, December 19, 2012, at the home of her parents in Mickleton, New Jersey, from complications associated with her courageous battle with cancer. A resident of Pitman, NJ, Jennifer earned her bachelor's degree in psychology with a minor in elementary education from Richmond University in 1995. She earned her master's degree in school counseling at Rowan University in 2000. After graduation, she sought an elementary teaching assignment in the primary grades, but was first offered a position as a sixth grade teacher at Woodbury City Public Schools in 1995. She taught Woodbury children from that moment forward. After her first year, she wrote "Some days I can't believe I get paid to do this job. It's like I feel most alive when I'm in front of a class. You have to be. I hope I always feel about teaching the way I do right now." And, she always did feel that way -- her entire career. During her time in Woodbury, she began to specialize in science education. Additionally, Jennifer was the Team Leader for all of the sixth grade teachers in the district. When she first began at Woodbury, she joined a faculty that included her father and during the balance of her time in the district, two of her three brothers joined her as Woodbury educators. Jennifer was the teacher who assigned her students the task of writing a letter to themselves as graduating seniors while still in sixth grade. Then, she personally delivered the sealed letters to the students during their senior year in high school. She was a dedicated teacher who was honored during her tenure as Teacher of the Year for the Woodbury Junior High School. Jennifer enjoyed a wide array of hobbies including book clubs with her teacher friends, baking, gardening and caring for her home of "Pitman Grove" origin, and time with her dogs - Abby (in dog heaven) and Lucy. Jennifer is survived by her loving parents, Joseph and Martha Jones, and siblings Joseph (Jennifer), Eileen Ferrara (Leonard, deceased), Dan (Carlotta), and John (Doreen). In addition, she is survived by treasured nieces and nephews - Benjamin, Corey, David, Noah, Vincent, Lindsay, Katie, Anna, and Kara; they were the recipients of unwavering love and attention from their Aunt Jen. Loving aunts, uncles, cousins, and godchildren also survive Jennifer. Until her last days, Jennifer was supported by a very large extended family of individuals connected to the Woodbury school community. In addition, she was a special friend to her group of fellow Richmond graduates. All of these individuals were instrumental in shaping who she was as a person - and, in turn, were influenced by her positive outlook on life. Family and friends are invited to her viewing Friday, December 21, 5:00 p.m. -- 8:00 p.m., and Saturday, 8 a.m. -- 9:00 a.m., at McGUINNESS FUNERAL HOME, 34 Hunter Street, Woodbury, NJ. A Funeral Mass will be held Saturday, December 22, at 10 a.m. at St. Michael's Church, 313 Memorial Ave, Gibbstown, New Jersey. Interment will follow immediately at Eglington Cemetery, Clarksboro, NJ. In lieu of flowers, donations in Jennifer's memory can be made to Woodbury Jr-Sr High School, Jennifer E. Jones Scholarship Account, 25 N. Broad Street, Woodbury, NJ 08096, to be used to recognize Woodbury graduates planning to enter the field of elementary education. Checks can be made payable to the Woodbury City School District. The Jones family would like to acknowledge the outpouring of love, support, and prayers that have comforted Jennifer and the family during this difficult time.

Dear Jones Family, I was very sorry to hear of Jen's passing. I was just telling my daughters about some of our sillier "adventures" and had them giggling. Thinking of all of you and keeping you in my prayers.

Dear Mr. and Mrs. Jones and family,
We were deeply saddened by the loss of your beautiful daughter. I would see her at teacher workshops and we would talk about Kingsway and all of the different friends she had. I always heard what a gifted teacher and loving person she was. I remember her and her friends from high school. Our prayers are with you and your family.
Sincerely,

To the entire Jones Family: My prayers are with your family on a daily basis. I feel comfort knowing what a strong family you are and I also know that you will overcome as Jen would want you to. I can't tell you how thankful I am as an adult to have all of my wonderful Dogwood Lane memories. Especially the dirt trail behind your house. I can see Jen like it was yesterday hanging out the back door yelling, "Hey Steph Lowe" in her sweet little voice. Thank you to all of you for welcoming me/the neighborhood into your home. Jen will always shine through all of you. May peace be with you all! Love, "Steph Lowe"

Dear Jones Family: My heart is just breaking for you. Jen came into my life when she taught fifth grade at Evergreen. We had the same lunchtime together and I will always smile when I think of our conversations. Jen had the most delectable sense of humor! Jen loved teaching and her enthusiasm for her vocation, her dedication and love for her students, her devotion to her craft, set an example for all of us. I feel blessed to have worked with such a kind, intelligent, and generous young woman. May the Holy Spirit, the Comforter, keep you in his loving arms.

My condolences go out to the Jones family. Jen was a wonderful teacher and colleague. She was my son 's teacher and she made his transition from elementary school carefree. Jen was also very supportive of the PTSA. Whenever I needed help from the staff she was always the first to answer the call.

Jen 's generous heart is now a part of her students futures.

My prayers are with you.

Ms. Jones was always super cool. I still fondly remember many of the lessons that she taught me in sixth grade. I still refer to them once in a while, sometimes for a laugh, or sometimes because of a factoid contained within the activities she would think up.

My favorite thing she had us do was invent something people in the world could use. It made us think of ways that we could make the world better for people by means of science.

She was so kind. It breaks my heart to hear that she passed away so young. My thoughts are with the Jones family.

To the Jones Family,I had the honor of working with Jen from 1995-2007. I got to know her better when I was transferred to Grant Shivers (our Athletic Director) office. I had the privilege of seeing her often in the halls and always enjoyed seeing her smiling face. I retired from WHS in 2007 & haven't seen her since, but her death, at such a young age, leaves a hole in the fabric of Woodbury Public Schools that won't soon be mended. She will be missed and is always loved. My prayers to the Jones family and may God bless you all. Sincerely, Lisa Murphy

Jen will be sorely missed by the students in the Woodbury School System she was the epitome of what a teacher should be and was loved by all of her students as well as the parents of her students. My son had her in 5th grade and said last night "she was the best teacher I have had my entire school career". Jen would always stop and ask him how he was and give him a hug when she saw him in the halls of the high school where he is now a Jr. She never failed to ask us how he was doing in school and said if he ever needed any help with any of his subjects to come and see her. Bryan still has his 5th grade math award that she gave him hanging on the fridge. We will miss her very much and our thoughts and prayers are with the family.

I am amazed at the many lives she blessed and touched. I believe Jennifer was called home for Christmas and has another job to do. Now she must be the Teacher to those little babies from CT who left the world way too soon. My thoughts and prayers are with Jen's family and friends. To the Jones Family:
My condolences to you. Jen was the epitome of an excellent, loving classroom teacher. She adored her students and they adored her. Observing her classes was a joy as she used various techniques and strategies to help her students learn. Her classroom reflected the science being taught and displays of student work helped to increase the self esteem of her students no matter their ability. She will be sadly missed by the students and staff, active and retired, of the Woodbury Public Schools.
