Carmen M. Bischer, 68, of Upper Deerfield Township died peacefully Wednesday afternoon April 17, 2013 at his home following a long and courageous battle with pancreatic cancer. He was surrounded by his family. He was born in Bridgeton on September 25, 1944 and was the son of the late Anthony and Violet Petecca Bischer. Carmen was the husband of Kathleen R. (nee Haaf) Bischer and they had been married for 48 years. Raised in Bridgeton, he graduated from Immaculate Conception School and in his youth was part of the inaugural group which formed Bridgeton Little League. His love of baseball not only led him to become a lifelong "optimistic" Phillies fan, he became a part of Bridgeton High School's varsity baseball program which won a state title with him "holding down" first base. He graduated from Bridgeton High School in 1963 and attended Rutgers University and Pierce Junior College. Carmen retired in 2007 as the administrative director for the Cumberland County Department of Health after an 18 year career with the county. Prior to that, he held positions in human resources at The Seabrook House and at the Lighthouse. He also worked for many years in information technology for Independent Management Services, Wheaton Glass and had been a founding partner of CLM Associates. He was most proud of his activities as a deacon in the Diocese of Camden and in particular for the parishioners of The Parish of the Holy Cross. Carmen became a deacon after four years of training on October 15, 1988, thus beginning nearly 25 years of dedication to the people of Bridgeton and the surrounding area. He was considered to be a devoted "people person" and expert conversationalist. During his time as a deacon he proudly participated in countless baptisms and funerals. He enjoyed his many years of golfing with family and friends. Carmen thought of his children as his most "prized processions" and his marriage to his supportive wife Kathy as the "best decision ever." In addition to Kathy, he is survived by son, Michael A. Bischer and his wife Darla of Upper Deerfield Twp., daughter, Jennifer B. Rice and husband Brad of Bishopville, MD, two grandsons, Brandon M. and Jason A. Bischer and one granddaughter, Isabella R. Rice. He is also survived by one brother, James Bischer and wife Linda of Upper Deerfield Twp., sisters-in-law, Mary Lynn Meandro (Peter), Patricia Wolf (Robert) and brother-in-law, Allen Haaf (Robin) and several nieces, nephews and cousins. Relatives and friends are invited to attend the funeral which will begin promptly at 10 AM at the FREITAG FUNERAL HOME, 137 W. Commerce St., Bridgeton on Tuesday morning April 23rd and will be followed by an 11 AM Concelebrated Funeral Liturgy at The Parish of the Holy Cross / Church of the Immaculate Conception, 312 N. Pearl St., Bridgeton. The interment will follow at Holy Cross Cemetery at Laurel Lawn in Upper Deerfield Twp. Friends will be received at the funeral home Monday from 5 until 9 PM and again on Tuesday morning from 8 until 10 AM. Memorial contributions, in lieu of flowers, are requested to the St. Vincent dePaul Society, c/o The Good Shepherd Dining Hall, 46 Central Avenue, Bridgeton, NJ 08302 or to The Parish of the Holy Cross, 46 Central Avenue, Bridgeton, NJ 08302 or to the charity of the donor's choice. Written condolences and tributes to the Bischer family may be sent to the family using the funeral home Web site, freitagfuneralhome.com.
