I met Bernard Lansky in 2006 in his store at the Peabody Hotel. What a class act! He took the time to tell us several of his Elvis stories which I'm sure he was asked about a million times. His eye for fashion was still sharp and cutting edge. He also provided us with a signed book highlighting his service to Elvis. The man was a true southern gentlemen that made you feel good just being around him.
November 16, 2012
I was so sorry to hear about Mr. Lansky's passing. Jim passed away last month, as well. I bet the two of them are up in heaven talking retailing.

November 16, 2012
SAD to hear of the loss of Bernard. I met him many times at the store, but the 1st was Great. I told him I had been a DJ during the 60's & 70's and played Elvis music, and with no more than that Mr. Lansky started telling me story after story. After an hour or so, he signed a book I had, taking up the entire inside front cover and put a Lansky sticker on it as an end-mark. Will miss seeing him yearly as I come to Elvis week & other Elvis events.
November 16, 2012
I didn't know Mr. Lansky but I want to express my sympathy to his family.

I'm sure Elvis is happy to see him again. Angel wings are fine but Elvis always liked beautiful sharp clothes!

We still bring out the book he gave us - autographed for my then little daughter - and tell friends of his humor, warmth and grace while sitting with him in the Peabody lobby listening to stories of his store and its customers (and then buying!). What a gift it must have been to have him as a father and friend! God bless you all.

November 16, 2012
To my dearest family, some things I'd like to say...
but first of all, to let you know, that I arrived okay.
I'm writing this from heaven. Here I dwell with God above.
Here, there's no more tears of sadness; here is just eternal love.

Please do not be unhappy just because I'm out of sight.
Remember that I'm with you every morning, noon and night.
That day I had to leave you when my life on earth was through,
God picked me up and hugged me and He said, "I welcome you."

It's good to have you back again; you were missed while you were gone.
As for your dearest family, they'll be here later on.
I need you here badly; you're part of my plan.
There's so much that we have to do, to help our mortal man.

God gave me a list of things, that he wished for me to do.
And foremost on the list, was to watch and care for you.
And when you lie in bed at night, the day's chores put to flight.
God and I are closest to you....in the middle of the night.

When you think of my life on earth, and all those loving years
because you are only human, they are bound to bring you tears.
But do not be afraid to cry; it does relieve the pain.
Remember there would be no flowers, unless there was some rain.

I wish that I could tell you all that God has planned.
But if I were to tell you, you wouldn't understand.
But one thing is for certain, though my life on earth is o'er.
I'm closer to you now, than I ever was before.

There are many rocky roads ahead of you and many hills to climb;
but together we can do it by taking one day at a time.
It was always my philosophy and I'd like it for you too...
that as you give unto the world, the world will give to you.

If you can help somebody who's in sorrow and pain,
then you can say to God at night......"My day was not in vain."
And now I am contented....that my life has been worthwhile,
knowing as I passed along the way, I made somebody smile.

So if you meet somebody who is sad and feeling low,
just lend a hand to pick him up, as on your way you go.
When you're walking down the street, and you've got me on your mind;
I'm walking in your footsteps only half a step behind.

And when it's time for you to go.... from that body to be free,
remember you're not going.....you're coming here to me.

What beautiful tributes to Mr. Lansky, that can be found here! I have read many, biographies, memoirs & oral histories of Memphis &/or Elvis. It seems all the books on Elvis had a story on Mr. Lansky. Those stories about the Lansky bros., were all positive, even in books that reeked hot gossip! What a beloved man he was. To his family, may his memory be for a blessing.

We went shopping and met Mr Lansky, he posed with my daughter under the picture that was hanging of Elvis and himself, he made my daughter feel so special. I'm sure that was what made him the gentleman that he was.He also spoke of Elvis which remains the highlight of our trip. May God bless and comfort his family.

I'll always remember you waiting outside of the house on North Trezevant for the ride to work in my grandmother's Buick. I'd ride in between the two of you in the front seat as a small child and remember how you'd wonder whether or not we'd all make it to the store alive because of my grandmother Rachel Herzog's driving skills.
And thank you Bernard, for the wonderful gift of the two tuxedos you gave me to wear when I played the piano for the grand reopening of the Peabody in 1981.
No one could make me laugh like you did did when I was a little boy. We will always love and remember you, your kindness, your charity and the love in your heart for this city, your friends, and your family.
GoodBye mishpucha.
And much love.
