To the Elio Maurizi Family:
Elio and I graduated from Bloom High School, Chicago Heights, Illinois in 1951. I remember Elio as an outgoing, friendly and just an all-around good person and my friend, but my best memory of him is on the football field. We played football for Bloom High School. In the Fall of 1950, we played Thornton High School for the South Suburban Championship. We played the game in November on a snowy Friday night in Harvey, Illinois. Thornton was the favorite to win the game. The game was in the third quarter and Bloom was leading by a score of 6-0. Thornton had the ball on the Bloom two yard line. Thornton tried three times to punch the ball in on line plunges and failed. On a fourth and two, the Thornton quarterback went back to pass. Linebacker Elio Maurizi broke through the line and tackled the quarterback for a five yard loss back to the seven yard line. Bloom took over the football on downs. Bloom went on to win the game 13-0 and also won the South Suburban Championship. The City of Chicago Heights went crazy. The most talked about thing that evening was the tackle by Elio Maurizi. As a matter of fact the play was talked about for years and may still be talked about today. Elio took everything in stride, but he went down in the traditions of Bloom High School Football as making one of the greatest plays in the history of football at the school. I did not mean to write so long, but as I write this I could relive and relish that moment. The Good Lord will now have Elio to watch the goal line. Thanks Elio and God Bless you and God Bless the Maurizi Family.
