Lilian Jackson Braun
TRYON, NC-- Lilian Jackson Braun Bettinger, a prolific best-selling author of The Cat Who mystery series for more than 40 years, died of natural causes at Hospice House of the Carolina Foothills in Landrum, SC, on June 4, 2011. She was 97 and had lived in Tryon, NC, for the past 23 years.
Ms. Braun wrote 31 books (two collections of short stories and 29 The Cat Who books).
Dutton published her first book, The Cat Who Could Read Backwards, in 1966. The New York Times labeled her "the new detective of the year". Two more followed with critical acclaim (The Cat Who Ate Danish Modern and The Cat Who Turned On and Off). There was an 18-year hiatus between the third and fourth books.
The Cat Who novels, considered light, humorous mysteries, have been translated into 16 languages, distributed worldwide, and sold in the millions. Her books were standards on the New York Times best seller list. Beginning in 1990, her books reached the prestigious list for 20 consecutive years.
She wrote all of her books in long hand. They were published with limited editing. "I don't pay attention to the publishing business. I just write my kitty-cat stories."
Ms. Braun (who once wrote "A dog has his day, but cats have 365") retired from writing in 2007 after the publication of The Cat Who Had 60 Whiskers.
Writing was a lifelong passion. "I always wrote, first for fun, then for an advertising job, then for a newspaper, and then for The Cat Who readers."
After a short stint as a waitress (lasting less than a week) Ms. Braun went to work for Detroit department stores, beginning as a copywriter and ending as the director of public relations. She took time off to write her first three books and then accepted a position as the "The Good Living" editor for the Detroit Free Press. She wrote feature articles on interior design, art and architecture, as well as reviews of kitchen gadgets and other household products. She remained with The Detroit Free Press for 30 years.
Lilian Jackson Braun Bettinger was born on June 20, 1913, in Willimansette, Chicopee Falls, MA. Her father, Charles Jackson, was an inventor and industrial manufacturing troubleshooter. Her mother, Clara Ward Jackson, was a homemaker. Her father's work took them to Rhode Island, Brooklyn, NY, and to Detroit, MI. Ms. Braun lived in Michigan until retiring to North Carolina.
In 2005 The Polk County Public Library in Columbus, NC, held a Tribute to Lilian Jackson Braun for her lifetime achievement and community involvement. It was an evening of song, limericks, readings and tributes. Ms. Braun served as the honorary writer in residence for the library as well as honorary chairperson of the 2005 library card sign-up campaign, where she created the tag line, "A library card is the beginning of a lifelong adventure."
Ms. Braun was preceded in death by husband, Louis Paul Braun; a sister, Florence Jackson; and a brother, Lloyd Jackson. She is survived by her husband of 32 years, Earl Bettinger.
No memorial services will be held. Donations may be made to Hospice House of the Carolina Foothills, 260 Fairwinds Road, Landrum, SC 29356.
Condolences may be sent to www.pettyfuneralhome. com.

I am very saddened by our loss of Lilian Jackson Braun. She brightened my days with entertainment by way of KoKo, YumYum, and Jim Quilleran. In the 90's, she had a newsletter mailed out to Cat Who fans. A few days ago, I purchased three additional Cat Who books for my collection of Ms. Braun's prized adventures. It looks as though they have never even been used as they are in excellent condition. May her memory be eternal. Blessings to her loved ones.

Once again, reading The Cat Who books. My mother passed in 2009 at 93 years. She found the first few books and eagerly awaited more as they were published. It was my joy to get them for her..." hot off the presses". I have read them numerous times and love every one. Blessings to all.

I call MS Braun my Aunt Lillian because I have the same last name. Some years ago, I read the first book, and then acquired them one by one until I had all of them. I still pick one down and read it. It is so skillful and clever hos MS Braun weaves the kitty cat solving the murder. She passed away, way too soon.

This is so very late, but if the family still receives these messages, I was thinking of Ms. Braun today, and how much I miss getting a new "Cat Who" mystery. I owned them all until I passed them along to others to enjoy. What wonderful memories I have of these stories, which were so real to me that I swore I saw Jim Qwilleran in my grocery store years ago! She brought a lot of pleasure to my reading and I'm so glad she shared her kitty stories with us all.

Thank you for the many, many laughs you gave me in all of "The Cat Who" books. I've read all of them except perhaps two, at most. Will have to rectify that. May you now be at peace and surrounded by all the kitty cats you ever loved. You made me laugh during some very dark times, and for that you have my respect and gratitude. I wish I could have met you. I miss your books.

My son and I started reading The Cat Who series when he pulled a muscle in his chest and couldn't go to school for a week. I stopped in a book store to find something to keep him busy while I was at work. He and I both love cats, so I bought a couple of books. We were hooked. I read them over and over again. I mourn the loss of a writer who wasn't afraid of keeping the book"clean" and threw in the humor that only a cat person could understand. A brilliant author was lost.

After my first novel "The Cat who moved a Mountain", I was hooked. I had my local library find the first books and within 6 months I've read them all in the order they were written. So sorry to read that she has passed, but her family and friends have a wonder guest book of over 339 entries to view and know dear Lilian Jackson Braun is and was loved by so many. Since I was born and raised in Michigan I always felt that Lilian was describing the north county towns from my home state and now reading that she and her husband did live in Michigan my thoughts are probably correct.
Blessings to Lilian's family and friends.

I discovered the delightful "cat who" novels through my mentor and second mom, Eva Tinsley, for whom I would go to the bookstore as soon as a new one came out. This was in the 70's, and I began borrowing her copies as she finished with them. I remember thinking why would she pay full price for a hardback copy when she could check out a copy at the Public Library. I was hooked after the first one read, and have finished them all, longing for another. Eva, and Ms. Braun are both in the heavenlies, along with the many felines they loved. I, at 91 am starting to re read all. Bless you for the many lives you touched. Hope to see you someday at the "Eastern Gate".

I have read many books over my 81 years; some for knowledge and information about a person, place or thing and some to help me shut out the world through fantasy or adventure. And then there is Lillian Jackson Braun: sheer enjoyment and light hearted mysteries. How I have loved solving them with Qwill, KoKo and Yum Yum in Moose County, "north of everywhere". Wherever you are, Lillian, I hope your kitties are with you.

I recently stumbled upon one of Ms. Braun's books and I am in the process of reading all of her novels. They have been a comfort to me in a difficult time. I would like to express my deepest gratitude. I regret that there is no effort to promote her books to new readers and that no one has written her biography.
Hopefully someone will write her life story and her books will never go out of print.

I have read all her books several times over and enjoy them immensely. I love her description of the small things in everyday life and she was able to make the characters so realistic. I keep expecting to see the obit of Jim Qwilleran printed some day! She was a great talent and I wish I had written to her while she was still with us to let her know of the many hours of reading pleasure she has given me. Rest in peace Miss Braun.

I too just learned of Lillian Braun's death. I just started reading them to my teenagers and family. We laugh, and have a hard time putting the book down. My feelings are similar to those I experienced upon learning of Agatha Christie's death years ago. Her characters, the cats and Jim Qwilleran, his associates and the interactions were very 3 dimensional and almost alive. They will be sorely missed.
Sincerely,

Please know that the family has been in my thoughts and prayers these past 2 years. Lilian's books were a source of pleasure and comfort to me. Pleasure just to fall into her stories and comfort of old friends during difficult times. I just loved her books, the cats, the characters and the predictament Qwill got into. I once wrote her a letter saying how much I enjoyed her books and she sent me a return note. I treasure it.
She was a gem in the world of mysteries, one who will never be replaced or forgotten.

I just learned of Ms. Braun's passing while looking her up on Google. I feel like I lost a wonderful friend. I accidently picked up one of Ms Braun's The Cat Who...books in an antique shop almost 100 miles from where I live during this past Christmas holidays. I don't know why the book(s) appealed to me but I knew I had to have them. I bought the only 4 hardcover books available by her that day, and not knowing what to expect. I now own 26 of her books and I can't wait to come home from work, feed my "kitties" - two beautiful white domestic shorthaired, whose names are Thomas, and Baby Girl.and read her book(s). When I read Ms.Braun's books, I look over at my "kitties" and sometimes read aloud to them. Ms. Braun opened up a world to me that just amazes me. Having lived in big cities all my life, her discription of small town living is really a breath of fresh air. Thank, Ms. Braun for your gift to me and others, you will be missed.

AFTER READING THE CAT WHO BOOK where he became the food critic. I started bringing home exotic treats from Chicago's Treasure Island grocery. Baby squid for one, which no one liked. I still follow the theory that if my cats won't eat it then none of us eat it.
I also loved Ms. Braun's wit and charm c/o silly names for
