I Have not seen bernice since the early 70's when she came through cleveland in "hair". Before that in the late 60's in kent ohio. She was singing with a group called "Marble Cake" and later a group called "Tiny Reed and the Valors". I went to kent with a friend of mine Mike Peoples. Bernice was dating his brother. It was such a surprise, we hadn't seen eachother in years. She flew off the stage and gave me a kiss. We about had to give Mike CPR! I grew up in Springfield and was a classmate of Bernice at Roosevelt Jr. High. We wanted to be girl friend and boy friend but the mores of the times wouldn't allow it. I'm white. A real no no . She had that unbelievable voice even then. We were the lead male and female roles in "Brigadoon". Even though we had rehersed together they wouldn't let her perform the night of the show. I refused to sing without her and we were both replaced. I moved from springfield just as we were entering HS. We promised to stay in touch, and did for a while, got busy wil our lives and drifted apart. In 1979 I had a daughter and in the early 80's we were watching Sesame Street. You can imagine my surprise. I called Childrens Television network and asked for Bernice Reed. The Receptionist said Bernice who? I then asked for her by her TV name. As luck would have it she was right there picking up a check. She got on the phone and immediately scolded me for calling her Bernice. She was leaving for the summer to return to California I believe, but she said to call her in the fall and she would arrange a tour of the set for my daughter. Just like
puff the Majic Dragon, fall came and my daughter didn't have the interest in Sesame Street anymore to warrent the expense. I then saw her at the Macys parade and on Comedy Central, but we never spoke again. I regret that deeply. I just found out about her passing now. You see I'm having my first granddaughter next month. It caused me to try to find Bernice online. We'll watch Sesame Street again but it wont be the same for me. I hope someone reads this someday and lets the family know that an old friend still remembers her and loves her. John Carter jtrew@att.net

May we never forget those we love. Even though it seems the pain will never go away, Please draw comfort from these words. "He is healing the broken hearted ones and is binding up their painful spots" Psalm 147:3

How do you say good-bye to someone you've know all your life. I've known Tiny longer than my sisters or brothers. WE were blood, best-friends,best-buds and I loved her for all she did and accomplished in her life. She loved the stage and was good at what she did.

I still have a void in my life and she is soarly missed. May God have you in the shelter of "His Arms".

How do you say good-bye to someone who you've known all your life. Closer than my sisters or brothers. We were blood, dear-friends, best buds and I loved her for all she did and accomplished in her life.

What a void I still feel after a year has passed. May God have you in the shelter of "His Arms".
