So very sorry to hear about your loss. I never met him however I met you at Midwest City Hospital where we were both employed as OR scub techs. And so vividly remember you and Lee Roy dating. My prayers that you be comforted as long as need be, because God is a comforter for as long as we need him to be. It's been about 34 years since I saw you and have often wondered how you were doing? Would love to get in touch with you at some point. Take care and know that God makes NO mistakes.

I met Lee Roy Selmon at Raymond James Stadium when he appeared as a guest speaker for Verizon. (early 2000's?) When he spoke I found myself listening intensely. He seemed to be a gentle kind person, sincere in caring about others, especially for the welfare of children. He had me thinking about my own children and at the conclusion of his talk, he was standing on the side of the room and without thinking, I took a football table decoration up to him and asked him if he would be so kind as to sign it for me. My thoughts were that my children would love it. He graciously took pen in hand and done just so. Having seen him do this, the room full of people immediately followed suit. I was overwhelmed with the thought that perhaps I caused this chain reaction. My thoughts for sometime after were that I had wished I had given him something, instead of asking something of him. My heartfelt condolences to those that knew and loved him. I pray that his family and friends will find peace.

I attended the Tampa memorial service in honor of a truly wonderful person, to repay a kindness he extended to me, a total stranger to him, many years ago. He held a door for me as I was entering University Hospital to visit my ailing mother, and when I thanked him, he said, "You're welcome. Isn't it a beautiful day?" I never forgot that encounter. I, as well as many, many others were touched by God's message shining through Lee Roy Selmon. My prayers are being prayed for God's comfort to surround the Selmon family during this most difficult of times.

I met the Selmon family back in the 80's . They attended my church St John Baptist on chipco in Tampa, Fl. I was deeply sadened when my sister first text me to tell me he had a stroke and then later that night that he had gone on his journey to be with God. I was devastated. I checked the internet and debated with my sister that he was not gone. I still cant believe it. I remember him as a soft spoken, always smiling and giving person. It was something special, unique and authentic about him. I have not seen him in many years. But I really looked up to him and his family. They all are really nice people. We lost someone really great. Not because of his success but because he was truly a good person. One of a kind. Thats what i remember about Leroy Selmon. Rest In Peace. Love Nichole.
September 12, 2011
We shall always remember Deacon Selmon as a true man of God. Our thoughts and prayers are with the family at this time.

Don’t look for me my family and friends in special places here or there,
Just look instead at all of life; I’m here and everywhere,
You will find me in the evening breeze that ripples across the pond,
You will find me in the warming sun that comes with every dawn,
You will find me in the smiles of friends, in the hugs of those you love,
You will find me in the misty rain that falls gently from above,
You will find me in those joyful things in life that you still treasure,
You will find me in your memories, for our time cannot be measured,
But most importantly you’ll find me, for you in paradise I wait,
You’ll find me yes you’ll find me, just inside of Heaven’s Gate.

Our condolences to the Selmon family. We had the honor of meeting Lee Roy one evening while visiting our daughter in Tampa. She took us to his restaurant for dinner and he was there and came over to our table and introduced himself and talked to us for awhile. He was just a presence. I know he will be greatly missed. We always go back just in chance of getting to see him again. We will continue just in his honor. May the Lord continue to bless his family. Charles and LaVonne Norris of Carterville, IL.
September 11, 2011
I had the honor to work with Lee Roy & Dewey when I was a young boy serving as a ball boy. My father, Tom Bass was the DC at the time, and he never had anything but the best to say when speaking of Lee Roy. My best memory is sitting in Lee Roy's locker, after our loss to the Rams in the 79 NFC Championship game, crying. We both sat and cried, nothing needed to be said. The world was blessed to have Lee Roy in it & it is now much less with his loss. RIP Lee Roy, you were one-of-a-kind. Dave Bass

I was a buccaneer "swashbuckler" cheerleader for LeRoy Selmon back in 1982. He was a gentleman, honorable and very kind. i will always remember very good times on the field at the Tampa Bay Stadium! No one had more class than LeRoy Selmon! It was a priviledge to cheer for such a loosing team; LeRoy helped me understand that it's not about winning...it's about doing your job. So, I did my job, as he did his job. He just made millions at it! I treasure the memories and wish the Selmon Family a precious hug and pray your emptiness at this sad time will be filled will Jesus' almighty love.

To the Selmon Family and to his dearest friends, my heart goes out to you in this time of grief. Mr. Selmon was an icon both on and off the football field. I have been a Buccanneer since its origins in the day and use to go and watch him play many games with my father. He was a man that all youngesters could look up to. When I heard the news, my heart dropped. But, he will always be in the hearts of those that loved him. Not only was he an icon but a legend. Sending much comfort in your time of grief.

Of all the greats that have played the game of professional football, I think you'll find it hard to find another that has also touched so many hearts & lives. Lee Roy Selmon, in life and in legacy, will always be one that stands out not only because of his greatness, but because of the humility that filled & guided his enormous heart. He never lost sight of that and I believe that is why he was and will always be that beloved human being, player & family member that all of us have come to know. A role model and an example for us all as to how we should treat one another. So let the real induction begin! God has called home His own saying, "Well done my good and faithful servant!" Thanks Big Guy! You will be sorely missed but never forgotten! Hope to see you again some day! God's Speed #63!

I worked in Cash Management Operations when Lee Roy worked in Cash Management Sales at First Florida Banks in the mid 1980s. He was one of the kindest, most humble and gentle souls I've ever met. He was also intelligent, thoughtful and impressive...not just his size, but in every way. It was an honor working with him for just a brief time. God Bless you Lee Roy.

I met him 1 day several years ago at the Toyota dealership in Brandon,we were both having our vehicles serviced, I was raining and as I was standing outside he came out and was looking around, I couldnt help myself and had to say hey aren't you Leroy Selmon? You can't have attended Eufaula High School in the '70's (as I did) and not have fallen in love with Lee Roy. My fondest football memory of him was his 75+ yd. touchdown running play(!) vs. Sallisaw in the rain that won the game for our Ironheads in 1971. Beyond his physical greatness, was his sincerity, grace, humility, and kindness. My heart is heavy with sadness.
September 09, 2011
The Tampa area will miss the father of the Bucs and USF football.

R.I P. Mr. Selmon ! You were a true inspiration to many ! Boomer Sooner !
September 09, 2011
TRULY one of a kind.My son plays for usf and i was introduced to him at a football dinner .Me ,a truck driver ,and leroy in the pro football hall of fame, yet he was the one extending his hand in friendship from 10 feet away with a huge smile and that infectious happy personality.his legacy will live on in all the young student athletes he probably reached out to in the same way . WHAT A TERRIFIC HUMAN BEING AND A TERRIBLE LOSS FOR ALL
September 09, 2011
Dear Lee Roy - you made the Tampa Bay area so much better with your presence. You came to us in 1976 and those of us who were a fan since day one will never, ever forget you as a Buc, a Bull and one of us. Blessings to the entire Selmon family near and far - you did a fabulous job. What a fine, fine man.
September 09, 2011
I met Mr. Selmon only twice. I will never forget his strength and gentleness. He served as the foreperson on a first degree murder case. You could see that he really cared and listened to the family of the victim as well as the family of the defendant. He was truly one of God's special people, placed among us to show us how to treat one another.
September 09, 2011
Take comfort in knowing that now you have a special guardian angel to watch over you.
September 09, 2011
I agree that if he had never played football at all, he would still be a hero in our community. He was truly one in a million, an example of what we should all strive to be and I thank the Selmon family for sharing him with us. God be with you.
September 09, 2011
Lee Roy. Growing up in Tampa Bay I learned of you. Consummate professional. Consummate Person. May God welcome you as we did as a blessing into our lives and may we as Buc fans, players and people honor you from this day forward by example.

My admiration of this man started with football,. The 1st and original Buccaneer! Met him at autograph sessions and out in the public and was in awe of his presence. Such a great man yet so humble. A true Gentleman. But he went beyond football. After his career as a player was over, he still showed his character in everything he did. Gone too soon, and I am sad for that, but grateful that I had the opportunity to shake his hand, for I was in the presence of greatness. Bless you Lee Roy,.. you made a difference here on Earth, and will continue to live forever in the hearts of many. God be the Glory!

I used to work with Mr. Selmon back in 1997 in the Athletics Dept. Mr. Selmon is and was every word that has been said of him. I will never forget my little yellow football and asked him for his autograph, he said "it is my honor" and I thank him, and he said no, thank you". I will always remember Lee Roy Selmon as the man who is, walked, talked the Field of Dreams.

September 09, 2011
I really feel a great sense of lost. Of all the players that I identified with since 1979, its Leroy Selmon. He was a great player, but more important, he was a great person. My biggest moment with Leroy is when i came face to face with him in the elevator of the county building. I looked up at him and just starred in amazement and he simply said, "Hello young man. How are you doing". I was speechless but so excited to meet such a kind and pleasant man. I will truly miss him and continue to strive to be a better father, son, friend, and person just like Leroy Selmon. God bless the family.
September 09, 2011

I met you boys in Eufaula one hot Oklahoma summer. Lucious was being onery and Lee Roy came over to apologize for his big brother's behavior as Dewey just grinned. What a team you were on and off the field. This Okie girl never missed a Sooner game after than, even when she attended OSU. Thanks for always being a great guy and reminding us why we loved your Mama and all you boys. It wasn't the remarkable football plays - it was the remarkable family. We have always kept you in our prayers and now we share those prayers with your family. God will hold them in his hands as Oklahoma holds them in our hearts. Can't wait to see you in heaven. Bye my friend

Dewey and Lee Roy flew with me when I was a Manager at Braniff in Tampa. I was honored when he brought his mother to the counter to meet me. It seems we always lost his luggage and Lee Roy would come by the counter and say "you know where I live" and laugh. He never complained and was always a true gentleman. We became friends and I was happy when he decided to remain in Tampa. I will miss him and send my prayers to his friends and family. God Bless and God Speed Lee Roy.

To the Selmon Family,
Our family has lived in Tampa for over 100 years. Few people have had the the major positive impact of Lee Roy within his life time. He put the Tampa Bay Bucs on the football map so to speak, made the business community broader, stronger, helped pioneer football at USF, assisted various charities and touched the community as a whole. We were blessed to have his presence, talents and influence in Tampa. Our family sends prayers to your family during this challenging time and in the days ahead.

September 08, 2011
Dear Selmon Family:

I never had the privilege to meet Lee Roy Selmon, but did get a chance to thank him on a radio interview on WDAE Sports Animal a couple of years ago. That phone call was spurred from a letter I sent to Lee Roy, while he was at USF. That letter was a simple acknowledgement from me to him on making the Football Hall of Fame in the summer of 1995. On 9/28/95, I received a letter in the mail at my office from Lee Roy thanking me for the congratulatory letter and how he is eternally grateful for this award. Wow! His humility, thoughtfulness and ever-flowing kindness will be remembered by me and my family always!
God Bless you! We will all love you forever! May you have eternal rest in God's Kingdom. Loscalzo Family
September 08, 2011
I played against Lee Roy a few times in NFL games and a pro bowl--and it's well known what a great human being he was off the playing field. I will attest here he was equally as classy on the field, too. You cold bite him, hold him, clip him,leg whip him and he never got upset or said a word...because more than likely he knew he was going to kick your butt the next play. A first class person on and off the field.
September 07, 2011
Always the Gentleman, Tampa was so fortunate to have you in this community for so many years. God Bless you and your family.
You will be missed.
September 07, 2011

September 07, 2011
I had the honor of working with Lee Roy in 1984 at the First Florida Bank. I did not know him personally but he knew of me because my husband Johnny and Father In Law Rey put tile in his home. So he came down to the department that I worked in a autographed a poster for my son Johnny Jr. It meant so much to me and has always stayed with me "What a SPECIAL Man" to do that for someone he didn't even know. He made me feel special because when he came to the office the girls said Debbie you have a visitor I was so surprised with who it was. When he left they said "WOW"!! you know Lee Roy Selmon. One special man. Great loss to the Community, Fans, and most specially his family. My thoughts and prayers to you during this time and the difficult times ahead of you. Memories are so special some will make you cry and some will make you laugh, but they will always keep you connected and close at heart along with strength from family, friends, and GOD he and they will see you through. I say this from my heart and experience because I too lost my husband unexpectedly close to 3 years ago so me and my family know the grief you are experiencing first hand. I have found though that we are stronger than we think and do go on.
September 07, 2011
Wonderful man that will be truly missed by all in the community. He was always available to help any charity in the area.
September 07, 2011

My sincere condolences to his family.
September 07, 2011

Mr Selmon was an asset to the Tampa Bay area in so many ways. As a USF alumna I can say that his contributions to the university were immeasurable and greatly appreciated. My condolences to his family. His legend will surely live on in Tampa.

My deepest sympathy & prayers to the family. Such a loss!!
September 07, 2011
I am one of the many thousand of people that never met Mr. Selmon but have always had great respect and admiration for him. Some twenty-four years ago he did present an award to my son and even then his fame and intregity had been established in the Tampa Bay area. There are few men (especially celebrities) that have lived their lives as honorably has did he. Mr. Selmon was a "light" to the community and nation of the love of Jesus. I'm sure when he looks into his Savior's face he will hear Him say, "Well done my good and faithful servant". Nancy Gardner (Sebring, FL)

Mr. Selmon was sincerely thankful to everyone who worked towards building that program. When I met him I felt like he was even more excited to meet ME! My hand felt tiny in his when we shook, but you could tell he had a gentle soul... Thanks for your service Mr. Selmon. You will never be forgotten!

Please accept my sincere condolences due the death of your loved one. I was never a football fan and many years ago had the opportunity to sit next to Mr. Selmon when the son of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr was at a local church in St. Petersburg, FL. Someone asked if I knew Mr. Selmon. I replied who is that? The rest is now history. From then on, I knew who Mr. Selmon was. I thank him for his contributions to others and to the Tampa Bay area. To the family, Be not dismayed for God will take care of you.

It was the mid 1980s and my great aunt was living in St.. Pete and I was living in NW Pennsylvania, in Pittsburgh Steeler country. My great aunt would send me monthly packages of Tampa Bay Bucs shirts and newspaper clippings talking about baseball coming to the bay area and all of the news about the Bucs. On one special day a package came with an autograph picture of Mr. Selmon and a Nike painters cap hat signed also. The story goes...my great aunt was at the mall and there was Mr. Selmon signing autographs, she got the photo and autograph for me and Mr. Selmon asked my great aunt who this was for and she explained it was for my great nephew in Pennsylvania and that he was a Bucs fan. Mr. Selmon than took off his hat and signed it for me and said to my great aunt that anyone living in steeler country and was a Bucs fan needed an autographed hat too! God bless Mr. Selmon and his family. Rest in peace.

I will never forget all the times I called Lee Roy and asked him to come to whatever school I worked at to speak to the students. He was always gracious and kind. He shared his heritage and testimony. He said the last time, "Don't you think I'm a little old for this?", I replied these kids need to hear your testimony. He never failed to sign autographs for the students and took time out of his busy day. I called him the Gentle Giant. He visited a dying student of mine one day in the hospital and told him to keep the faith. He is now in Heaven with him. The student was thrilled I am sure to see his hero walk into Heaven. I will miss you my friend. God speed. Bless all the family for your sharing Lee Roy with all of us through the years. He always spoke proudly of his loving family. God bless you and thank you all!

September 06, 2011
As everyone has said once, and will say many times more...Lee Roy helped build USF athletics to what they are today, he led by example and had a calm demeanor not just in sports, but in life as a person. In my time at USF, I saw our school skyrocket from Div II to Div I football. Our school went from Conference USA to the Big East and Florida no longer had just 3 big schools for sports, but now 4 as the nation began to see us for who we were and no longer took us for granted. Thank You Lee Roy. Thank you for your dedication and leadership. I hope that we can continue to make you proud of us as we continue to grow.
September 06, 2011

God Bless Lee Roy Selmon, his family and friends. Mr Selmon was/is the best example of what an NFL player should be. Passionate about the game, but even more passionate about the people and fans he encountered. This is such a RARE quality in an NFL player. Mr Selmon will be missed but I believe God needed him more than we did.
September 06, 2011
To the family of Lee Roy Selmon, I had the great pleasure to meet his parents when my brother Brad Parrott was a Sports Reporter for the Daily and Oklahoma Times in the home where all of the kids were raised. You definitely knew how and why this family raised such wonderful children. It only took about 2 minutes to capture this information from Mr.and Mrs. Selmon. My brother asked where they were baptized Mrs. Selmon in the pond across the street from the house. Not only will the Sooner fans will miss this wonderful man but also a OSU cowboy whom come to meet LeeRoy through the Fellowship of Christian Athletes. I met you as a high school 10th grader in 1979, and had the unique privilege of seeing and interacting with you over the past 32 years. My family's first USF road game was to OU where you were inducted into the Academic HOF. Every year, you took pics with my boys and they know the model person you are. You left us all too soon, but God has better plans for you in heaven.

I met Mr. Selmon at Hops restaurant waiting outside for a table. I was sitting down and I saw this huge guy walk by me and right away I knew who he was. I stood up introduced myself and I congratulated him on making the NFL Hall Of Fame. He took the time to talk with me about his HOF experience. He will be greatly missed in this community. He was a 1st class role model, RIP Mr. Selmon.

I can remember as a young girl watching Lee Roy Selmon playing for the Buccaneers. It was exciting to watch him in all his glory. Years later, I was shopping with my son and Mr. Selmon was in the store signing autographs. Of course, we had to wait in line for the autograph. Even in just signing a football his gentleness was evident. Now I am proud to say my son is a member of the USF football team. My deepest condolences to the Selmon family. He will be remembered!!!!
September 06, 2011
Claybra & family,

May God Bless and keep you always!

May our Lord Jesus Christ Himself and God our Father, who loved us and by His grace gave us eternal encouragement and good hope, encourage your hearts and strengthen you. A sunset on earth is a sunrise in Heaven. Lee Roy fought the good fight, he ran the race and finished the course and answered the call of the Lord and received his crown. His memories will always remain in your hearts. God's Blessings

September 06, 2011
To Lee Roy Jr and the entire Selmon family I offer my deepest heartfelt condolences.
September 06, 2011
While we may not have been ready for Lee Roy to leave us, we as Christians know that since God called him home, Lee Roy Selmon had finished his course. We also know that to be present in the body is to be absent from the Lord and to be absent from the body is to be present with the Lord. So, Lee Roy is safely home with his Lord and Savior and his family and friends who arrived in heaven before him. Now we must fervently pray for his wife, children, siblings and the entire family and his close personal friends because as much as his passing has grieved this community, we can't begin to imagine the impact on his family. May God comfort, keep, sustain, lead and guide the Selmon family.

I was born and raised in Tampa...Lee Roy Selmon is the first autograph I remember getting as a kid. Now I live in Texas and people around here remember him as a Sooner and the havoc he wreaked on the field as an opponent. A great man who did much for the Tampa community. He will be missed.

September 06, 2011
To my dearest family, some things I'd like to say...
but first of all, to let you know, that I arrived okay.
I'm writing this from heaven. Here I dwell with God above.
Here, there's no more tears of sadness; here is just eternal love.

Please do not be unhappy just because I'm out of sight.
Remember that I'm with you every morning, noon and night.
That day I had to leave you when my life on earth was through,
God picked me up and hugged me and He said, "I welcome you."

It's good to have you back again; you were missed while you were gone.
As for your dearest family, they'll be here later on.
I need you here badly; you're part of my plan.
There's so much that we have to do, to help our mortal man.

God gave me a list of things, that he wished for me to do.
And foremost on the list, was to watch and care for you.
And when you lie in bed at night, the day's chores put to flight.
God and I are closest to you....in the middle of the night.

When you think of my life on earth, and all those loving years
because you are only human, they are bound to bring you tears.
But do not be afraid to cry; it does relieve the pain.
Remember there would be no flowers, unless there was some rain.

I wish that I could tell you all that God has planned.
But if I were to tell you, you wouldn't understand.
But one thing is for certain, though my life on earth is o'er.
I'm closer to you now, than I ever was before.

There are many rocky roads ahead of you and many hills to climb;
but together we can do it by taking one day at a time.
It was always my philosophy and I'd like it for you too...
that as you give unto the world, the world will give to you.

If you can help somebody who's in sorrow and pain,
then you can say to God at night......"My day was not in vain."
And now I am contented....that my life has been worthwhile,
knowing as I passed along the way, I made somebody smile.

So if you meet somebody who is sad and feeling low,
just lend a hand to pick him up, as on your way you go.
When you're walking down the street, and you've got me on your mind;
I'm walking in your footsteps only half a step behind.

And when it's time for you to go.... from that body to be free,
remember you're not going.....you're coming here to me.

he was the greatest
September 06, 2011
I would like to say that it's truly amazing to see how many hearts Lee Roy and his brothers have touched from the east coast to the west. But reading thru these thoughts and prayors it is most obvious of what a great man Lee Roy was. There's very little that I would trade growing up listening to my Sooners every football Saturday huddled around the kitchen table as a child in SE Oklahoma staring at a portable radio as if you could visualize every play by play... There were very few games to watch on TV back then. Our friend, you'll truly be missed and we are so proud of you and your brothers. Rest in peace and blessings to your whole family. Boomer Sooner and Go Bucs from your many friends.
September 06, 2011

September 06, 2011
Lee Roy shared a love affair with his community--He served on the Board of the Art Museum in addition to all his other service. Notwithstanding his fame, he was very down to earth and easy to talk to. We spent quite awhile at lunch one day talking about his restaurant, his BarBQ sauce, and mostly his Mom's meat loaf.

He had a presence and a warmth that was remarkable.
September 06, 2011

To Lee Roy's family
My heartfelt condolences. He has been a great friend to me. From when we met in 1978 at the opening of a Popeyes Chicken to last Friday at the restaurant. We continued our friendship when he was at First Florida Bank. I am so blessed he met my daughter and her family Friday. He was so proud to be a grandfather of a little girl. I told him how fit he looked and wished we could play golf. How glad I was he didn't have to operate the restaurants. He pointed out the slim profit margin. If I only knew he was to be taken from us so soon I would have given him a hug instead of a hand shake.
September 06, 2011

September 06, 2011
GOD saw you getting tired and a cure was not to be. So He put HIS arms around you and whispered "COME TO ME." With tearful eyes we watched you, and saw you pass away. Although we loved you dearly, we could not make you stay. A golden heart stopped beating and hardworking hands are at rest. GOD broke our hearts to prove to us that He only takes the best. Although it's difficult today to see beyond the sorrow, may looking back in memory help comfort you in the days to come. May the Selmon family find comfort in knowing that Leroy is now with the LORD. May God bless you all.

I met Lee Roy Selmon in 1978 and have watched his life and career ever since. I've spoken to him a couple of short times in the intervening years as well. Based on my personal experiences, what I've seen over the years, and what I've heard the last few days, I've come to the conclusion that although there are plenty of words to describe and remember this gentleman and his legacy, there are not enough of them.

Lee Roy Selmon
One of the greatest to ever play the game and how so very lucky all of us Sooner Fans were that he was a Sooner. We will never ever forget him or his brothers and I know the Sooner Nation is deeply saddened at his passing.
September 05, 2011
I used to play pickup basketball with Lee Roy when I was at OU. When I first started playing, I wasn't real confident playing with an athlete of his caliber. But in a two on two game, I was looking to pass the ball instead of shooting. Lee Roy said, Shoot it! You can make it. It went right through the hoop. He was a very gentle giant! Godspeed and thanks for letting me play!
September 05, 2011
There is a great void in the world with the passing of Lee Roy Selmon. Imagine what a better place the world would be if we all strived to be half the human that Mr. Selmon was. He truly personified what a true, honest, humble, gracious, careing human being should be.I had the privelidge of watching him play, and the desire to be a better person as a result of knowing of him as person. My heart felt condolences to the family.
September 05, 2011

My prayers and best wishes to all the Selmon family. Oklahoma's family....
September 05, 2011
The Selmons were my football heroes growing up (along with Little Joe) and I got the honor of meeting and talking to Dewey and Lee Roy in November 2009 at Lee Roy's induction into the Oklahoma HOF in Tulsa. My great aunt (Nannie Patterson) lived close to them east of Eufaula and taught them (and others of the Selmons I suspect) in school at Eufaula. What a thrill it was when they said they remembered her from all those years ago. My grandad (Milam King) was an attorney in Checotah who did some work for Mr. and Mrs. Selmon at some point and always talked fondly of them and what great people they were. That has proven true over our lifetimes. I will miss Lee Roy and what he meant to OU as a fellow alum and to a kid that met him yet didn't really know him but sure felt like he did with my relative connections and with the weeks I spent in Checotah and McIntosh County visiting my grandparents. I hope to see Dewey and Lucious again someday and let them know how much of an impact they had on this 54 year old banker and on my McIntosh County relatives whom Lee Roy is now with in Heaven.
September 05, 2011
My thoughts and prayers are with the Selmon family. May God give you peace during these most difficult days.

This message is to the entire Selmon family but especially to Lee Roy Selmon Jr.

Lee Roy, we worked together several years ago with de Morgan homes. It was apparent to me then that you were a very special person who had the guidance and love of a tremendous family.

In this time of great sadness for you and your family take comfort in knowing that your father's legacy lives on in you. He will be with us through your life and your children's lives.

Your friend

When you think music, it's Elvis. When you think of Buccaneer football, it's Lee Roy Selmon! Since I first heard his name 35 years ago, I have been a fan of his. He is trully one of a kind, and I'll never forget this great man.
September 05, 2011
Back in 1982 my parents sent me to football camp one summer at Western Maryland College. Each year the camp invited pro players to come and talk to the kids and instruct them. Although a lifelong Redskins fan, at that time Lee Roy Selmon was my favorite player. Needless to say I was thrilled when I found out he would be attending the camp that summer.

So on my first full day there I was walking into the dorm when I see this large man walking out the front door, a bunch of teenagers trailing alongside him staring up in awe. I immediately recognized who it was and mustering up the courage I walked right up in front of him, stopping him in his tracks. Not knowing what to say I nervously blurted out, "Mr. Selmon, you're my favorite player".
I was all of 11 years old at the time, and about the size of a sprout. In an instant the biggest smile imaginable spread across his face. I told him how great he was in the 1981 Pro Bowl (3 sacks if I remember correctly) and he just laughed gently, put his arm around me, and he walked beside me talking - as modest as can be. You can imagine the impression that made on a little kid.

The next day when each age group lined up for pictures with the pro players I made sure to jump in front of Lee Roy . He immediately recognized me, smiled and said hello and put his hand on my shoulder for the photo. I still have that picture tucked away somewhere...

Everything I have heard and read about Lee Roy Selmon since then only served to confirm my view of him as a modest, kind and generous person - a man in the truest and best sense of the word.

I was so terribly sorry to hear the news of his passing this morning. My heartfelt condolences go out to his family.

Lee Roy, it's going on 30 years since that summer day back in Maryland. I'm getting gray in the temples now, but the impression you made then hasn't faded. May we be blessed enough to have more like you.
September 05, 2011
We all mourn the loss of a great citizen and wish nothing but the best to the Selmon family. We have lost a legend and you will never be forgotten for all that you have done for our community. Thank you for everything. Rest in peace Mr. Selmon.

I got to know Lee Roy when I was working on a special project where I worked. He was such a gentleman. He had a smile that brightened up any room he was in and what a sense of humor he had...he always cracked me up with the jokes he shared with me. He was a man of great faith in his God and a godly husband and father. My sincerest condolences to his beloved family. Our loss is heaven's gain. As I used to tell Lee Roy everyone knows God loves football and football players. May the peace of Christ which surpasses all understanding be with you.

All time favorite player and family. Jess has handed down lessons that has endured three generations. The Selmons make me proud to be Oklahoman!
September 05, 2011
Watching the Bucs years ago and feeling as though we knew the players, this loss is very hard. I heard Mr. Selmon speak many times when he was with First Florida Bank - what a gentleman and gentle man. I am consoled in his passing by knowing what a great man of faith he was. God always has a plan for each of us. I pray that his family knows how much he meant to so many of us. God bless them. CL
September 05, 2011
Lee Roy was such a humble person. I will never forget him. I was a mere guard in the parking garage at First Florida Tower where he worked. There were many well to do people there including Lee Roy. I had my knee in a splint and he ask what happened. I told him of my inpending surgery. He told me he had that same surgery and even though we spoke breifly; he just made my day. I mean heck; this was Lee Roy Selmon who came to talk to ME. Always had a smile on his face when he drove out of the parking lot. I wasn't close to him but I felt I did know him. Forgetting you never Mr. Selmon!
God bless your family & friends as they go thru this trying time with peace. In Jesus name Amen!!!
September 05, 2011
I became a Bucs fan in September of 2002,6 months before they went to the Superbowl and won. I met Lee Roy at Buccaneer Heaven in 2004 when I came down for a bucs game. It was a Saturday afternoon. I came to the store from the airport to do some shopping before I went to my hotel. It was busy at the time I got there and to my surprise, Lee Roy was in there signing autographs for charity. I purchased a mini helmet of the throwback logo. I was in awe because I couldn't believe that was him. He signed my helmet and we talked for a few minutes. It is a moment in my life I will NEVER FORGET. I also had lunch at his restaurant down the street from Raymond James Stadium. My server gave me a take out menu and a set of drink coasters with his #63 on them, the food was very good too! I just bought his hall of fame shirt a couple of months ago, I am going to wear it on Sundays this year in his honor. There are not too many people like Lee Roy that just have that special personality that touches so many lives. It was such a priviledge to meet him. We will never forget #63. God bless. Your #1 fan in N.Y. Jackie Campbell

Members of the family, friends, acquaintances....There always comes a time at the end of all of our lives when we must leave those of us on earth and give an account of our labor. The Apostle Paul in his letter to the Romans declared, "Every man must give an account of himself to God."
That account is long for Mr.Selmon. Few among us achieve so much. Many of great genius sow seeds of progress that blossom only after long years. Mr. Selmon's seeds have already bloomed in our lifetime. May the good Lord watch over the family.
September 05, 2011
One of the Good Guys. A definate loss for Tampa.

My deepest sympathy and prayers go out to Lee Roys' family. I attended Jr. high and high school with Lee Roy in Eufaula Oklahoma, and was saddened to hear the news of his passing. May God comfort the family.
September 05, 2011
One of the things I wanted to do the most was meeting and talking to Mr.Selmon.Growing up in Oklahoma in the seventies I was a huge sooner fan.I remember the Selmons were amazing players and were always well respected not only for there terrorizing the opponents but great students and really good humble down-to-earth people. Living in Krebs, about 30 miles from Eufaula,I read all the high school articles about Leroy and his brothers. So you could imagine when I moved to Florida in 2001 ,I heard of all the wonderful things he had done and what kind of incredibly generous and wonderful person he was . So one of my dreams was to meet and talk to him. I guess that will have to wait for a while. I know the whole Tampa Bay community will miss him and I will always include he and his family in my prayers.

May this great man rest in peace with his Almighty Father. Lee Roy Selmon was the hero of so many people and will continue to impact our young althletes for many years. Sincere sympathy to the Selmon family for losing such a wonderful, loving man at such an early age. God bless you.
September 05, 2011
We will miss Lee Roy in the tampa area.
He will always be a giant in the Tampa bay area, thank you for your gifts to us.
September 05, 2011
Being that I live in Bowie Maryland I sometimes feel so detached from my favorite football team all the way down in Tampa Bay. For eleven years now I have been one of the most die hard loyal buccaneers fans outside of the Tampa Bay area. Even as I type this a bright orange #63 signed jersey sits over my head hanging on the wall. These past few days have seriously had the affect of a bad dream to me that no matter how much I read and hear about, I refuse to believe its real. Everyone is talking about how much of a great person Lee Roy was, and its all true tenfold. Regardless of his stature in the community or his legendary status, if you walked up to him and talked to him, you left the conversation feeling like you were talking to a lifelong friend, not someone of his influential stature. Humbleness, respect and dignity embodied the way he lived his life, and it was our pleasure to have even known him on a distant fan-superstar level. He changed so many lives in his far too short life, and will greatly be missed by many. May he forever Rest in Peace.

I havent heard anything yet about a #63 emblem or sticker being worn on the jerseys or helmets this year but something has to be done. Someone in a different forum mentioned a statue and various other ideas. I know there is always a plan in anything God does, but this feels so wrong. And it feels like we owe it to him to pay him the utmost respect and remember him the best way possible.
September 05, 2011
Mr. Selmon was a great player, but an even greater man. We will miss him.
September 05, 2011
I was there for 0-26, and one of the few bright stars, literally and figuratively, was Lee Roy. I was there at USF when there was NO football (class of '82). His leadership as a Buc, his leadership as AD that got football to my alma mater, is what I remember and will alway cherish about him. I was in South Bend this past weekend for arguably the most epic win in the Bulls short football history. They had a moment of silence for Lee Roy and prayers for a speedy recovery, a class move by a class institution. I saw numerous Bulls fans at the airport in Chicago and everyone's joy was tempered by his untimely death. His passing puts a damper on the excitement and euphoria of the win over the Irish, but I'm convinced that Lee Roy is now either the starting DE or the AD of the greatest football team in Heaven. God Bless you Lee Roy.
September 05, 2011
Sincere condolences to the Selmon family for your loss of a Great Super Star in football and family. Who will always be remembered and missed by all Sooner Fans, Players and anyone who knew him. May he rest in the house of the LORD forever!

September 05, 2011
Condolences to the Sooner Nation from Nebraska. Had the honor of sitting in the stands and watching those great OU teams in the 70s. I have no doubt Lee Roy was the best of the best; both as a player and a person
September 05, 2011
Lee Roy, you have been remembered for all your great works...
September 05, 2011
In a world lacking true role models Mr. Selmon was the ultimate. A true example of how to play the game on the field and live life off of it. The "Greatest Sooner Ever" on the field for sure. Off the field the quotes of so many saying that if their children grew up to be like Lee Roy is truly a compliment that holds more value than the many achievements on the grid iron. Like the signs in the 70's used to say.... "God Bless Mrs. Selmon" and the rest of the Selmon family at this time.
September 05, 2011
My heart and my prayers are with the Selmon family at this time...All 3 of the boys have been a great part of our lives including the BBQ sauce. Being great SOONER fans forever and They had the greatest teams ever...Your family set a GREAT example for everybody to follow including worshiping OUR GOD and SAVIOR. God Bless.
in Christ Love

I consider myself the biggest Buccaneers fan and my Dad is the biggest Sooner fan, so as you can imagine, we are greatly saddened by the loss of Lee Roy. Thanks for all the memories Lee Roy - We love you.

A life long Bucs fan and a Canadian here residing in Vancouver,Canada. I attended and played high school football back in the days when the Bucs and Seahawks(I am a Seahawks seasons ticket holder as well) came in to the league. My idol growing up was Lee Roy. Back in 2005 I was in Tampa and I called up USF where Lee Roy was a athletic director and asked if I could meet him. They said "sure,as long as you are not a autograph seeker"> I was in awe! My idol!!! Hell of a nice man. Got a picture of him and I which I shall always cherish! God bless you Lee Roy. No doubt in my mind you went too soon and you are now in god's hands! My condolences to Dewey and ll the selmon family members. We have truely lost a true class human being!
September 05, 2011
was always concerned about his children and the most polite and gentlemanly person when requesting info about his son and if he rode the bus that day from Ben Hill middle school.(it always turned out the boy was at sports practice and forgot to tell his parents.
September 05, 2011
Lee Roy was a great football player and an even greater ambassador for humility and humanity! God Bless
September 05, 2011
Our entire family are Lee Roy Selmon fans. We had season tickets for many years and were there for all 26 losses in the beginning but Lee Roy and the Buc defense kept us faithful as they always made the game exciting with their spectacular plays. It is sad that he has died so young but his memory will never die. My heart and prayers go out to his family and friends.
September 05, 2011
Lee Roy Selmon really helped put Tampa on the map, and he was a pillar of the Tampa community. He will be so completely missed.

Grief can be so hard, but our special memories help us cope. Remembering you and your loved one today and always.
September 05, 2011
I miss him already and probably always will!
September 05, 2011
My family and I were deeply saddened by the passing of Mr. Selmon. There just isn't enough good people in this world any more and I would never use the phrase: "He was a good guy" when describing Mr. Selmon. It would have to say "He was a great gentleman". Our prayers go out to you and your family.
September 05, 2011
Dear Selmon Family,
I am so very sorry for your loss. I am a Tampa native who has followed the Bucs from day one. Lee Roy has a very special place in the heart of our community and of mankind. You will remain in my prayers in the hours, days and weeks ahead. May our God send to you His Comforter and His Peace. You are not alone in your grief,
September 05, 2011

While I cannot feel the profound loss as intimately as the family members of the late Lee Roy Selmon, I must share that your loved one was a "Phenomenal Man." How prideful it has been to observe true character and integrity in an individual who shared his ultimate worth with humanity. His life truly reflected the legacy imparted by Christian parentage. God's continued Blessings upon your family. May God rest the Soul of Lee Roy Selmon.
September 05, 2011
I never had the privilege to meet Mr. Selmon, but like thousands of us, I wish I had. His presence will be felt in the Tampa Bay area forever. My heart goes out to his family, friends and teammates...you were blessed to have him in your lives, and it was always evident that he was blessed by you as well.

September 05, 2011
To all of the family. You are in our thoughts and prayers as we all mourn the loss of Lee Roy. You all set an example for us of what a family should be - - and how to play the game with integrity. May God bless all of you.
September 05, 2011
To The Lee Roy Selmon Family, There are times in life when someone comes along and you can just feel it in your Spirit that they are different, special, one whom will one day do great things. We thank-you for sharing Lee Roy with us the fans.He was a thrill to watch, and gave many hours of pleasure. He was a gentleman, he had honor, (on and off the field), he was of the old school footballers who played for the shear thrill of playing. In life he may have had defeats professional and private, but in death he is Victorious! Safe in the arms of Jesus in Heavens end zone. May God cradle you with love and peace through this difficult time.
September 05, 2011
Tampa Bay has lost a great man. I work for the Tampa Sports Authority for over 10 years. I saw him at all home games for the Bucs and USF as I worked the Media Elevator. He is truely going to be missed. My thoughts and prayers goes out to his family.
September 05, 2011
Lee Roy Selmon was a kind, generous, strong, and loving man and it is a genuine loss to have him leave us this early. Thank you to the Selmon family for sharing Lee Roy with the Tampa Bay community. We are holding all of you in our hearts and will grieve with you. His contribution to this world was immense, in a million big and small ways. I can only imagine his contributions in Heaven. He is missed now but will always be loved.
September 05, 2011
As a child, my mother was hired by the Selmon family to watch over their daughter Brandy. Sadly, my mother was battling cancer during this time and they were only in our lives for a brief period. Shortly after LeeRoy Jr was born, I think my mother ended all her babysitting duties. The Selmon Family have an undeniable presence. LeeRoy not only seemed larger than life, but so did Claybra. They have a beautiful energy to their family. They were kind and gracious & I feel blessed to have been graced by the presence of this kind of "celebrity". My thoughts & prayers are with the entire Selmon Family. May God grant you everything you need during this time of great loss. With Much Love, Susan Rae

Mr. Selmon was a true role model for all who came in contact with him. Although it seems he was taken home far too soon, God must have had an important job lined up for him in heaven. My thoughts and prayers go out to his family and friends. God bless you all.

Never met you but listened on the radio, watched you on T.V. and read about you and your brothers in the newspaper. I'm an OSU former player but you had an impact on alot of young football players from Fairfax Oklahoma.
Bless you and thank you. R.I.P.
September 05, 2011
I feel like a piece of my life was taken away when you were. I meet you once and actually sat down with you and Hank Aaron for over an hour at a food show in Tampa. Both you and Mr. Aaron were two of the nicest people I ever had the pleasure of meeting. That short meeting has always stayed with me and I will always treasure the memory of that time. Your pleasant warm smile, thoughtful words, and the things you have done for this area will live on forever. The thoughts and prayers of my wife and myself go out to your family and friends.
September 05, 2011
My thoughts and prayers are with the Selmon family. Really enjoyed watching those great Selmon lead defenses play; I think LeeRoy was the greatest sooner player ever. There needs to be a statue of him at the stadium.

My heart truly aches over this devastating and unexpected loss. My deepest sympathies to the Selmon family. I was honored to have known Mr. Lee Roy Selmon during my years of employment at USF/Athletic Dept. (2001-2006). What a kind, caring, humble, and selfless man. Death leaves a heartache no one can heal; love leaves a memory no one can steal.

September 05, 2011
I'm a 41 year old Tampa male native and Leroy has been my hero role model since I was a preteen from first watching him being double teamed on the Bucs. He never complained about that but continued to kick butt for our team.I have been fortunate enough too meet him five times in my life. The first two times were at the Lowry park zoo were he was with his family and I just walked up on him and began too talk his ear off I was eleven I never forgot how polite he was even though I was intruding on his family time.He came too my school when I was in the sixthgrade and he taught our class. He became a banker that year I can still remember his huge football clets he brought too show us kids along with the other uniform stuff. When I was in my mid twenties I lived in Citrus park and ran in to him at the Discount Auto on Gunn Highway we talked for a long while and he actually remembered me from Lowry Park. He made an impression on me about the reality of Jesus at that time in my life and how I should consider allowing God access too my life. I knew there was something deep and different about this man. Leroy did much to bring a young white male racist out of ignorance first thru the light of humanity and then too the acceptance of his Saviour and now mine as well. Leroy was and is still a blessed man that this community will never forget even as Heaven is welcoming him now......

To the Selmon Family, you're in my thoughts and prayers today, as you have been since Friday. Lee Roy (along with his brothers) is the role model America's youth athletes need to look up to. Thank you for sharing him with Oklahoma, and with America. His walk of faith inspires motivates & encourages those who have ears to hear. Lee Roy is resting in the arms of Jesus now. My prayer is that his family has peace that passes understanding, knowing that he indeed has heard the words, "well done my good and faithful servant."

September 05, 2011
I met Mr. Selmon in the early 80's as he came to the Buccaneer Day Camp in Odessa where I was the Director, to register his son for the summer. While I had admired him from afar for his athletic skills and work with young people in the area, it was a joy for me to speak with him in person. He was a polite, gentle man with not a bit of the attitude that we so often find in our sports celeberties. My heartfelf sympathy goes out to his wife, childern and extended family. Tampa will have a hole it its heart that Leroy Selmon once filled.
September 05, 2011
Truly a devastating loss....my thoughts and prayers go out to the Selmon family, to the city of Tampa, and to my fellow mates in the Buccaneer Nation. RIP #63

As the photographer for the Outback Bowl since its inception, I met Lee Roy many, many times. He was an exceptional human being. You were naturally drawn to him because of his gentleness, so unexpected from a pro football player. He was such a great role model, it's more than sad that he died so soon. Indeed, the Tampa Bay area and the world have suffered a great loss.

I'm proud to have met such a man as Lee Roy Selmon, his calm personality/spirit was one of a kind. We all seem to have great things to say when there is a loss, however Lee Roy's life was a testimony of how those in the sports arena should act on and off the field every day of our life. If Lee Roy has touched your life in any way you have what many of us dream of.....hope! To the family, may God keep you during this time.

My parent's home was about a mile from the Selmon home near Eufaula, so the Selmons have been a part of my life for a very long time. My daughter's first words were "go Lee Roy" and Boomer Sooner. Heaven is singing for one of its own coming home. Our prayers are with you all.
September 05, 2011

September 05, 2011
Lee Roy, I know you are in heaven with all the OU legends of the past, playing football with a passion.
September 05, 2011
I was too young to get to see you play, but I'm a Sooner for life, and I'll never forget the look in the eyes of the older fans who did get to see you play. I always thought... man, that must have been one special player.
September 05, 2011
It is with a heavy heart I say farewell to the greatest Buc ever! A great player but a better man of the community. He will be greatly missed. God Bless him.

My condolences to the Selmon family. Lee Roy was a man that our young athletes could look up to. What a fantastic role model he was to our community too.
September 05, 2011
Tampa Bay loves Lee Roy Selmon. Thank you to Lucious and Jessie Selmon, the town of Eufala, and Oklahoma University for sharing your native son with our area. We are blessed, honored and humbled to have had Lee Roy as one our own. He was a great Ambassador for the University of South Florida and Tampa. He was one in a zillion. Always had a smile on his face. Such a gentle man. We will miss him terribly. God Bless Lee Roy Selmon.
September 05, 2011
What a great human being. May God be with every Selmon family member.
September 05, 2011
I remember reading that when Coach Lacewell went to Eufala to recruit Lucious, he first met Dewey and Lee Roy. He decided then Oklahoma needed all three.

All of the Sooner Nation was greatly impacted by Lee Roy. We saw greatness as a player; but, we also saw more greatness as a human being.

Hopefully some younger players will read about Lee Roy and decide to be more like him that some of the newer "star" players.

Our thoughts and prayers go to all Lee Roy's family friends and fans.
September 05, 2011
Thank you for representing the tampa bay area with such class and dignity. It was a pleasure to have met you. It's a very sad day for all.

September 05, 2011
My condolences to the Selmon family. May the words found at Job14:13-15 bring you comfort.
September 05, 2011
As a born and raised Sooner, spending my Saturdays watching the Selmon brothers play OU football was a thrill. I've lived in the Tampa Bay area since 1995 and I have seen how much this community loves Lee Roy. They love him for being the most honored Buc player, the catalyst for USF football but most of all, they love him for his quiet strength and example of how a Godly man should conduct himself. I have no doubt that he has heard the words "job well done good and faithful son" and he is most deserving. Prayers going up for the whole Selmon family.
September 05, 2011
I am deeply saddened by Lee Roy's passing. I have been a Buccaneers fan since the beginning and he was truly one of the great players--a role model both on and off the field. The young players today should follow his example. He will be truly missed. He had so much more to give. My thoughts and prayers are with his family. God Bless!
September 05, 2011
To the Selmon family. You have my deepest sympathy in your time of loss for Lee Roy. I met Lee Roy at a benefit basketball game in the early 1980's at Crestview high school between the faculty and some of the Tampa Bay Bucs. I was in the navy during that time and stationed not far from Crestview, Fl. A friend of mine was on the team (Richard "Batman" Wood)and introduced me to Lee Roy. When I was introduced to Lee Roy, I remember standing on the first step of the bleacher's and shaking his hand and looking at him saying to myself (this is one big brother). I mean, we were almost the same height and he was standing on the floor. Lee Roy must have knew what I was thinking, he just shook my hand and grinned. From that short introduction, I could tell he was a beautiful person. Again, my condolence's to the Selmon family.
September 05, 2011
I have watched OU Football for 67 years and Lee Roy Selmon was the best ever. And probably won "the best ever Good Guy" award, also.

We all mourn the passing of a great human being-- Tampa has lost an icon!!!!!! RIP
September 05, 2011
As someone born and raised in Tampa, I can say there is no greater icon in the Tampa Bay area then Lee Roy Selmon. He was exactly what we want our sports heroes to be, great on the field, kind & humble off it. He was a great man and his impact on our area is immeasurable. The man will be missed, but his spirit will live on. Thank you Lee Roy.
September 05, 2011
My thoughts and prayers are with the Selmon family.
September 05, 2011
I'll never forget when the 3 selmon brothers were our front line. And I remember thinking the parents had to be strong in Christ to bring forth and set these young men on the road to success. THANK YOU MR. LEE ROY SELMON.

September 05, 2011
Heavenly Father has called home his servant. Job on earth well-done. A fellow Oklahoman that had the pleasure of a minute with this respected man.
September 05, 2011
To the Selmon family and all of Tampa Bay, so sorry for your loss. Lee Roy will always be remembered in my thoughts and prayers as he touched my life numerous times over the years. In 1982 at a Bucs pep rally at Tyrone Sq Mall, I asked him to sign a football for my mother as she was the one that taught me to love football of which Lee Roy played a large part. In 2000 standing in line at the Northdale McDonalds together waiting on our meals, he had a nice smile and gave me a warm hello. However, the last time I saw him was 11:30pm one Christmas Eve at Walmart on Ehrlich. Like all of us have done, he was picking up that one last gift for a loved one. We stood together looking at the same shelf trying to decide which item would be best. He smiled and wished me a Merry Christmas. I'll never forget that moment. Such a wonderful soul. I will miss you Lee Roy.
September 05, 2011
A giant has fallen. Our thoughts and prayers go out to his family. As well as our thanks for sharing this great man with all of us. God's speed, #63.
September 05, 2011
When I was a boy my parents used to take me to watch the Sooners play. During those years the Selmons were on the team. They have always been my favorite football players. Not only because of their great football ability; but because they are great men both on and off the field. Athletes today should look to the examples of Leroy Selmon. He has touched the lives of so many people. I am glad I had great role models like this growing up.
September 05, 2011
It is heartbreaking to loose such a person, they are so rare these days. My prayers for the Selmon family that they feel God's grace and peace through this difficult time.
September 05, 2011
When I was stationed with the Air Force in Altus Ok. back in the early '70's, I watched OU football. I became a fan of not only the Sooners, but of the Selmon brothers. Lee Roy was awesome !! I also remember him playing against the Saints. He was a class act and touched the lives of so many people. Not only is Tampa feeling low, the Sooner Nation is hurting, too !! You were a good man, Lee Roy.
September 05, 2011
I am so sad and tearful that we have lost such a wonderful person! I never met you, but just hearing you speak was like you were speaking directly to each person listening to you. Thank you for sharing so much of your life with us..we will be forever grateful. I will keep you always in my heart. My thoughts and prayers are with your family.
September 05, 2011
Rip#63 you will truly be missed! My thoughs and prayers go out to your Family!
September 05, 2011
I am heartbroken over this devastating loss to the Tampa Bay area. Lee Roy Selmon was everything good about Tampa Bay; one of our greatest ambassadors. His example lit the torch for other Buccaneers, including Warrick Dunn, Derrick Brooks, John Lynch and Mike Alstott, to follow as pillars of the community during and after their playing days.

Lee Roy Selmon, though I am sad to say I never met him, was an inspiration. What other person can you meet, celebrity or no, that literally no one has anything bad to say about? Selmon exemplified devotion to family, faith, community, and the advancement of young people for longer than I have been alive. All celebrities - indeed, all people, should try to carry a little bit of Lee Roy Selmon's grace with them.

I hope that the overwhelming love, admiration, and support the entire nation has demonstrated for Mr. Selmon provides his family and friends some measure of comfort. I feel as if I've lost a friend today; I can only imagine what those close to him must be feeling to lose this giant of a man. The entire community mourns today with you, and will support you however we are able in this terrible time and beyond.
September 05, 2011
Lee Roy Selmon was a great football player, and an even greater man. I was lucky enough to have him sign my Buc hat years ago and it seemed like he was suprized I was excited to see him. I don't think I ever saw him on T.V. without a smile and saying something nice. We all lose by losing him at a young age. My prayers are shared with his family and friends
September 05, 2011
When I was in High School Mr. Selmon helped my friend and I after we locked our keys in her car. We were working a promotional event in which he was signing autographes. He waited with us until AAA arrived which was long after the event ended. He was a really good man and will be deeply missed by many. I'm sure he is celebrating his ultimate victory with our Lord and savior. May the Lord bless him and his family.
September 05, 2011
Never met you, Mr. Selmon, but loved who you were, what you stood for & how you loved us all... a kind, patient, selfless giving soul who inspired us all to want to do more, to be more, to love more.... to be like you... Too soon gone from our lives but so grateful for you, to you. None of us are the same that you were among us.... Hearts of all you touched are heavy today but know God holds you close. xoxoxo
September 05, 2011
To a great Sooner Great he will be miss
September 05, 2011
Lee Roy Selmon stood for doing the right thing even if doing the right thing was not the popular choice of others. Lee Roy stood for greatness in life, whether on or off the field and led his life as a man of god. My families thoughts are with his family today. Lee Roy will always live large in everyone's life no matter where they are today and tomorrow.
September 05, 2011
When he was a young boy, my father visited his home. I remember him saying how polite the the boys were to their parents and my father. My father was so impressed with the whole family. Mr. Selmon was a big man in ways that really matter.
September 05, 2011
I had the privilige to be a teammate of Lee Roy's in his banking career. He was a consumate professional who always found time to give back to his community. He cared especially deeply about our young people and did everything he could to set an example and show them how faith, hard work and good character were the ticket to a better life. I didn't know Lee Roy when he was a Bucs player, but I have been, and always will continue to be a fan of the man -- a gentle, humble man of highest moral character and community servent.
September 05, 2011
Taken from us too early. Class act both on and off the field. You will be missed.
September 05, 2011
Lee Roy, I knew you when you and Dewey were the janitors at Cooper-McClain middle school. Your work ethic and infectious smile were your trademarks. Thanks for all the memories, I will always miss you old friend.
September 05, 2011
Lee Roy and Claybra moved to the Plantation, came to dinner several times, great neighbors. years later we would be in a store and would hear ' Nelson, you not going to speak?' I
think that says who he was, i will always remember that sweet giant of a man!
September 05, 2011
Born and raised in Oklahoma and now living in Tampa I grew up being acutely aware of the entire Selmon family and watching Leroy's career through the years. What a wonderful testimony to life, love and family. God bless them.

September 05, 2011
My son, Seph, was ten when I took him to a reception held by former USF President Betty Castor. Lee Roy was there and virtually bounded across the room and gave Seph a bear hug. Ten and a bear hug from Lee Roy Selmon. Seph knew he was "important" but didn't know why. Lee Roy quickly signed a small pennant flag which Seph hung on his wall. Seph was struggling in school. Turns out Lee Roy's degree was in Special Education. We chatted. Seph is now 25 and completing double master's degrees. Lee Roy Selmon touched our lives. We cry at his loss.
September 05, 2011
Claybra I am so sorry for your loss,,He is a great man of God.

R.I.P. LEROY. A TRUE PRO IN EVERY ASPECT OF LIFE. YOU WILL BE MISSED! GOD BLESS THE SELMON FAMILY AND GIVE THEM STRENGTH.
September 05, 2011
My Dad, who is no longer with us as well, always admired Mr. Selmon (#63). He made me aware in my younger years in the late 70's and early 80's of what an icon and what a legend was all about. I will never forget when me and my Dad had season tickets from 1976-1983, enjoying watching him play along with the other greats on those memorable Buccaneer teams. Not only when he was sacking quarterbacks in those great Buccaneer years, he was always special to the Tampa Bay area and now in Heaven as well. I can never forget when my Dad was working for Eastern Airlines in the early 80's, I had the honor of meeting him and shaking his hand and that is something I will treasure forever. He was a community giant and always will be and that will be treasured forever too! With prayers and condolences to the entire family and his friends.
September 05, 2011
I grew up watching Lee Roy play. He was always one of my favorites. My thoughts, and prayers are with his family.

Leroy was loved by so many people because of the person he was. The football was great, the person was even better. May God bless Leroy Selmon.
September 05, 2011
I'm not much of a believer, but even I prayed for Lee Roy Selmon -- not to survive, because I know all too well what a major stroke can do. I prayed to God to be kind to Lee Roy Selmon. If he was going to recover, then I hoped God would be kind to him, and let him have a really good recovery; but if he wasn't going to have a good recovery, to be kind to him, and take him. I am sorry that it had to be the latter.
As a member of the USF community, and a big Bulls fan, losing Lee Roy Selmon is like having our hearts cut out -- but this must pale, next to what it has done to his family. I hope they can find some comfort in knowing what an enormous impact he had on so many lives, young and old.
He was cherished by all of us, and he will be badly, badly missed.
September 05, 2011
God takes the good ones at a a very young age and God needed him instead of us. May God watch over each and everyone of his family and friends. We will still see you out there in spirit as we watch the Bucs play. My prayers are with you all as God has added another special person up there with him.

I was a student at Oklahoma and worked at KGOU while Lee Roy played there. He graciously gave a young student interviews after games. Recently in the past year, I had the privilege to sit by Lee Roy on a flight from Dallas to Tampa. It was a wonderful conversation of old times with the Sooners. He was very kind and cordial during the trip to Tampa. I now cherish having the opportunity to visit with him during this trip. We will miss him. He won numerous awards in life but his greatest reward he now has. He truly was an example in the life he lived here on earth. I pray for comfort and peace to the Selmon family during this difficult time.

This is indeed a sad day for Tampa Bay. I know of few people who have affected this city like Mr. Selmon. What a fine example of what a decent man should be. There are few men around these days for young people to use as role models and now there is one less--what a great loss. God bless his family and take care of them.
September 05, 2011
Made an error before saying OK state rather than the state of Oklahoma, my apologies. But we are going to miss him so much at USF and Buc nation. He was our true hero, role model, and great person. Mr. Selmon was quiet strength, but he had a kind word for everybody , and gave his time freely to do so. I hope they put up a memorial to our true Hall of Fame Buccaneer. My condolences to his famiy. It was my pleasure as a young man at the age of 10yrs old to meet Mr.Selmon when he did an autograph signing at JCPenny's. He took any and all questions and even gave me a hug and told me to never give up or give in-and alway keep God first in my life.
September 05, 2011
What moves through us is a silence, a quiet sadness, a longing for one more day, one more word, one more touch, we may not understand why you left this earth so soon, or why you left before we were ready to say good-bye, but little by little, we begin to remember not just that you died, but that you lived.
September 05, 2011
If you ever had an interaction with Mr Selmon, you would have become a fan of the man forever. I know I did
September 05, 2011

September 05, 2011
I had the pleasure of working with Lee Roy 20+ yrs ago at First Florida Bank and spoke with him occasionally through the years after that -- he was then and remained an exceptional person -- kind, caring, humble, humorous, and wise beyond his young years. He was a gifted man who knew no strangers and treated everyone as a friend. My heart goes out to the family for this sudden shock -- may God shine his countenance upon all of you and give you peace that Lee Roy is not struggling and suffering -- the pure shock will help cushion you through these hard days and months ahead. The tears will ease in time and he will remain in your hearts forever.

He helped make OU a very special place during his time on campus. Much sympathy to the family but thanks to them, too, for sharing him with the Sooner Nation.

I wish there were words to express my feelings. Lee Roy gave so selflessly of himself and touched so many lives -- I hope that the love that Tampa Bay holds for Lee Roy will help sustain his family through this difficult time.

There's an old saying that says that as long as someone speaks your name or thinks about you, you never truly leave this life...if this is true, Lee Roy will be with us for a long, long time.
September 05, 2011

I knew of you sir...I knew of your accomplishments on the football field ...the pursuit of excellence and unselfish dedication in everything you did. I sit here with tears running down my face over a man I never met but whom I greatly admire. No word I've read or heard ever had a disparaging thing to say about the man, Lee Roy Selmon. There are very few of us that will ever be able to say that on our reckoning day. Thank you for your dedication and consistent positive examples of living life...this world would be a better place if we were smart enough to walk in your footsteps.

what a legend you were. I am so shocked. mike key jackson tennessee
September 05, 2011
I was only 1 when Lee Roy played at OU, but the time that I do remember was in 1984 when I had a football signed by Lee Roy at a FCA event and he gave me a hug when he handed me the ball. He told me sooners forever. I was just a kid and he hugged me like I was his. After that day I started collecting everything that I could in the crimson and cream and I am proud to have met a man such as Lee Roy. I guess this kind of example is why they call it sooner born and sooner bread. RIP Lee Roy the Ormiston Family will never forget you.
September 05, 2011
As an OU student I saw you play in 1974 and 1975 and recall how you were always there to not only help stop the other team to help pick them up if you had the chance. You made winning a class act, and later with Tampa Bay losing also.

May the Lord keep you, and then us as we seek to serve his ministry to you and others.
September 05, 2011
I will always remember when I happened to be down on field level at Owen field in Norman. It was the end of the game and Leroy and his brothers came by on the way to the locker room. Just the memory of how big and awesome he was will always be there. He has been the best defensive lineman at OU, no question about it. Leroy, Dewey, and Luscious will forever be role models for all who play on the defensive line. Our prayers are with all of his family.
September 05, 2011

September 05, 2011
Lee Roy Selmon was a great man on the field and most importantly in the Tampa Bay Community. I was coaching a youth baseball All Star Team that was raising money to travel to a National Tournament. Mr Selmon was a speaker at my Service Club meeting. He was there to speak about USF athletics. He heard my request from my Club for monetary support and he pulled out a $100 bill and his business card. He said "good luck" and asked if I could send him a tax receipt for the charitable deduction.

Just another example of his generosity to this community.
September 05, 2011
Sincerest condolences to the Selmon family and to the Tampa Community.

As a little boy I met Lee Roy Selmon. Although the time was very brief it had a lasting impression on me that I have kept dear all my years since. That moment put him and the Buccaneers forever in my heart. He was so much more than a football player. He will be missed on levels that most will never understand. We all feel a great loss and I pray that God comforts his family and friends during this difficult time.
September 05, 2011
I had pleasure of meeting Lee Roy twice, once as a student at USF. He was by far the most accomodating man i have ever met. He was a football legend yet found more importance in being a wonderful person. I am sure his family is proud of the mark he made on others. God bless his family, my prayers for your loss.
September 05, 2011
I was saddened to hear of Lee Roy's passing. Even in the Bucs' early years when losing was frequent, Lee Roy made me proud to be a Bucs' fan. He was a heck of a player and an even better person. Rest in peace.
September 05, 2011
May your family have peace that passes all understanding during this very difficult time. Prayers are with you!!
September 05, 2011
An example of a life well-lived....you were simply the best and will be forever remembered.
September 05, 2011

There are many rocky roads ahead of you and many hills to climb;
but together we can do it by taking one day at a time.

When you're walking down the street, and you've got me on your mind;
I'm walking in your footsteps only half a step behind.

And when it's time for you to go.... from that body to be free,
remember you're not going.....you're coming here to me.

One of the nicest gentlemen I have ever met in my life. I bowled with him in a charity event back in the middle 80's and never had so much fun watching someone enjoy throwing a gutterball. I can still hear his laughter as he watched the ball roll toward the gutter. I will truely miss him, I was an avid fan of his and send my heartfelt sympathies to his family.
September 05, 2011

Thanks for all of the gridiron thrills as well as your positive example. Someone once said that the two best things to ever come out of Eufala, Oklahoma were faith and family. Thanks to the manner in which he lived his life that statement can now be officially amended to include Lee Roy Selmon. Fear not, as always the Lord will have the last word. Dennis Kimbro, OU C'72.

September 04, 2011
I remember as a scrawny 13yr old getting into the '77 Bucs locker room and standing amongst these giant men. I was meekly seeking autographs and the prize one was Mr. Selmon's. What a wonderful human being and may his family find solace in knowing that he was thought more of for the man he was, than the sports legend he became.
September 04, 2011
I shook Lee Roy's hand when I was picking up tickets at the SunDome for an upcoming football game. I thought he was the gentleman who passed by me picking up his tickets when I heard the the ticket agent address him by name. I stopped, turned around and said "Mr. Selmon?" He patiently said "yes" and appeared to be in a way not too happy to be stopped, but when I told him how much our family was enjoying watching his SON playing with the Bulls, he broke out that beautiful smile and reached out and shook my hand like every proud Dad....God Bless Lee Roy and all of his family.
September 04, 2011

September 04, 2011
You will be missed !! A great football player but an even greater person !!!
September 04, 2011
To the Selmon family, friends, the Sooner Nation, USF, the Tampa Bay area and its Bucs fans, I offer my sincerest condolences and prayers. I'm normally not a praying man, but I try to honor those special people that have touched a lot of lives as Lee Roy did and will continue to do even though he has passed. I attended OU from 1970-1975 and enjoyed OU football then and ever since. When Lucious arrived, there was a sense that there was going to be a lot more to OU football than an explosive wishbone. When his brothers joined him and took their defense to another level, I enjoyed watching their defense as much or more than the offense. Lee Roy was the biggest reason for that rise, but would never take credit for any part of it. He really was a humble man. I always got the sense that the Selmon family was very close even back then. I know Lee Roy had acknowledged as much. Let's hope the work of Lee Roy away from the ball field and the enormous support his family gave to each other becomes an even more profound example of what is needed again in our injured nation, which is searching for answers and direction. I'll miss you Lee Roy.....
September 04, 2011
We are sad to hear about his passing, but know that all His Family will be in our prayer, and Tampa will miss such a great legend, and true Christian man, and inspiration to all who knew him.
September 04, 2011
I met Lee Roy at a dinner for graduationg class of the Community Police Organization in 2003. What a wonderful inspiration you were to everyone who came in contact with you. I feel fortunate to have met someone with such a warm and generous nature. Thanks for your contribution to society Lee Roy, you will be sorely missed. My thoughts and prayers are with your Family ...Rest in Peace..Gentle Giant.
September 04, 2011
We have been Buc fans from the beginning with the Selmons and others. The Selmons were across the hall in separate LaMaze classes at Women's Hospital. I'll never forget how excited we were to see them up close and in person. Those same two children attended Sickles High School together. Our hearts and prayers go out to the entire Selmon family. We share your loss with you.

September 04, 2011
Lee Roy was an inspiration to all, Sooners, Cowboys and Oklahomans in general. He and his brothers are icons and deeply loved by all Sooners.. He will be deeply missed. Thanks for all the memories of one of the greatest college football defenses.

I feel honored and proud that I could call him my friend.
September 04, 2011

September 04, 2011
Leroy, you were my first memory of OU football when my dad would take me to the games just to watch you. Switzer found a sleeping giant in little ole Eufaula OK.Thanks for all the memories.Your THE man.
September 04, 2011
Take comfort in knowing that now you have a special guardian angel to watch over you.
September 04, 2011
Selmon, we OU fans will never forget you. Your commitment and dedication to your teams brought you great success. I am proud to say you are a Sooner. You will always be remembered as one of the very best! BOOMER SOONER!

My thoughts and prayers are with the entire Selmon family.
September 04, 2011
Leroy and his family were neighbors of ours for a number of years, and, although we never got to know them well, I was always impressed by how down to earth they were. I'll always remember the day I went for a walk on our road and passed the Selmon's property as he and his kids worked out in their yard. He stopped and introduced himself, saying simply, "Hi, I'm Leroy." He was truly a humble and remarkable man. His passing is a huge loss to the whole Tampa Bay area.
My thoughts and prayers are with his family.

Leroy,I have been in Tampa from the very beginning and have witnessed your greatness as an athlete and as a man across the full spectrum of your public life-you reached a level of respect and admiration few could ever hope or deserve to obtain but you most certainly did deserve it with the integrity, honor and countless good deeds of a most humble man ...and now though the game of life has finally played out you will live eternally in our thoughts and memories and sometimes when we may have occasion to sit and think of the finest people we have known of in our lives you will again be the #1 pick.

The Freys absolutely love this man. He was always so friendly and never bothered by anyone wanting to talk with him or in our case, take a picture with our two young girls. He worked with my brother-in-law Greg at USF when Greg was the offensive line coach there. He really was a great man!

We can remember watching Lee Roy as a Buc, but the first time we were ever able to meet him, was @ a car show @ OK Kids in Tampa. He was gracious enough to talk with us and feed us with his amazing BBQ. He also was gracious with his time for our Little Leaguers in the area. He was an amazing person and will be truly missed. This news saddens us all. Our heartfelt prayers go out to his family.
