For 20 years, by far the longest tenure of any mayor serving Treasure Island, Walter Stubbs watched the bottom line. Stubbs died Sunday (Oct. 12). He was 93.

Dear Nancy: I will always think of Walter as my mentor and good friend during my ten years as mayor in Indian Shores. I often referred to him as "the man who gets me in trouble"...with great fondness...as he recommended I run to be president of the Council of Mayors and the BIG-C. His presence was always welcome and we were flattered to have him as a friend. We would have been at the service, but Mary was taken to the Emergency Room that afternoon. She is recuperating.

I was very sad to learn of the tragic passing of former mayor Walter Stubbs. As a former resident (but still a home owner in T.I.), and former volunteer firefighter, I was proud to call T.I. home. The city's growth and improvements under Mr. Stubb's terms in office were exciting to watch and be a part of. Always a friendly, cordial man who would offer up his smile, it was both a pleasure and a honor to meet and greet Walter on Sunday morning's at Friendship Community Church. He was like a surrogate grandfather to many. It is truly a sad part in the history of Treasure Island and I offer my sincere condolences to his family, his many friends and to the residents of Treasure Island. May he rest in complete peace and may we all celebrate his life and his many accomplishments and contributions to the successes of the City of Treasure Island.
Sincerely,

I worked with Walter for 14 years - he was a great man and a pleasure to work for - he was tough but fair. He was a great asset to Treasure Island and worked hard to make it a great community.

Walter,
A good man and great Mayor. Walter was usually upbeat and positive and had memory of minute details. He always had a story to tell and a good joke. Walter you will be missed. May heaven shine on you.

Walter Stubbs served Treasure Island with a firm hand. He demonstrated very tight fiscal control. His debonair personality and accent was always attractive. Once you met Walter, it was hard to forget him! My sympathy to the family.
