Robert Craig "Evel" Knievel

Robert Knievel Obituary

KNIEVEL, Robert Craig "Evel" Friday, Nov. 30, 2007, marked the end of what will forever be remembered as the longest and most courageous battle between one man, a man we all know as the world's greatest daredevil, and death. Robert Craig "Evel" Knievel died in Clearwater, FL, finally succumbing after nearly a three-year bout with the terminal lung disease, idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis. He was 69. His death was preceded by more than 40 years of constant battle against the persistent pain of broken bones and severe trauma after jumping and crashing motorcycles like no man had ever done before. In addition, he also fought to overcome the tremendous obstacles of diabetes, hepatitis C, a liver transplant, numerous surgeries and two strokes. Knievel's legacy as America's Legendary Daredevil, Last of the Gladiators, and King of the Stuntmen will undeniably live on among millions of fans, past, present and future. However, the memories of the man apart from his legend will live on even stronger in the hearts of his friends and family. Despite his well-known swagger of self confidence, the legacy he wished for most of all was simply to be an inspiration. "The fame of great men ought to be judged always by the means they used to acquire it." By this maxim, nothing will ever be able to take away or challenge the things accomplished by Evel Knievel. Whether it was unmatched courage or just an absolute unwillingness to give in to fear, Robert Craig Knievel was a man's man through all the days of his life. He took great pride in the simply stated, yet most difficult to accomplish principles: always living up to his word, never shirking the responsibility or consequences for his actions regardless of the personal risk, and never, not ever, failing to stop trying. Knievel was born in Butte, MT, on Oct. 17, 1938, to Robert Edward and Ann (Keough) Knievel. He and his younger brother, Nic were raised by the loving family of paternal grandparents, Ignatius and Emma Knievel. Growing up and living in Butte were some of the most valued times of his life. His fame took him far and wide across the country and even over seas, but Knievel never let go of the love and pride he had for his hometown. Growing up in a blue-collar mining town, Knievel attended Butte public schools before serving in the U.S. Army Reserve. As a young man he was always an exceptional athlete, hard worker and determined individual. Knievel explored and excelled in many different professions, if only for a short time, before finding his calling as the ultimate daredevil. During his prime as a bona fide celebrity, Knievel enjoyed his spoils to the highest. He loved fast cars, private airplanes, fancy yachts and the finest clothes and jewelry money could buy. He was sought out by Hollywood's biggest stars, many with whom he remained friends until his death. In the end, he had a few regrets, but he always sincerely strived to do the right thing. He never forgot who his real friends were. He never forgot his love for his family. And he never forgot the place from where he came, what he'd learned or what others had done to help him get to where he did. The red, white and blue for which he is famous were a tribute to his Butte character as much as they were for America. In his last years, one of the greatest honors was being able to share his hometown with his world of fans and to participate and take pride in the celebration of his annual event, "Evel Knievel Days." He dearly loved his grandchildren and he always made it a point to stay in touch with the people he loved the most, his friends and family. And lastly, most important to him above all, was his new-found faith in Jesus Christ. Just as he always took great care in surrounding himself with the best people he could depend upon to help him make his jumps during his motorcycle career, Knievel found his greatest friend of all in preparation for his final leap from life. He was profoundly happy that he gave his life to Jesus, who comforted him and gave him the strength he needed to make it through the end. Knievel is survived by his loyal friend and wife, Krystal Kennedy-Knievel, whom he married in 1999. She stood by his side through his greatest struggles with health until his death. His in-laws include Krystal's mother, Sylvia and her husband, Wayne Croft; father, Glen Kennedy, and Krystal's sister, Shawn and husband, Rory with their two children. He is also survived by his former wife of 38 years, Linda Bork Knievel. Though they divorced, Linda and Evel had four children that all made them proud. Son, Kelly Knievel and daughter-in-law, Shelli with granddaughter, Lily; son, Robbie Knievel and granddaughters, Krysten and Karmen, with great-granddaughter, Analiese; daughter, Tracey and son-in-law, Mitch McLeod, with grandchildren, Josiah, Jesse, Melody, Cody, Cole, Casey and Dusty with wife, Rachel, and great-granddaughter, Lucy; and his youngest daughter, Alicia, with son-in-law, Matt Vincent, and grandchildren, Madelyn, Jaicee, Rye, and his sixteenth grandchild expected this June. Other surviving family members include his stepmother, Mrs. Robert Edward Knievel; brother, Nic and his wife, Rusty; sister, Kristy and brother-in-law, Hugh Lawrence; sister, Renee and brother-in-law, Bill Slaughter; sister, Robin and brother-in-law, John Dick; and sisters, Loretta Young and Kadie Bonêy. He is also survived by numerous nieces, nephews, extended family, friends and his millions and millions of fans. Public Services will be held for family, friends and fans at the Butte Civic Center at 11 am, on Monday, Dec. 10th. A private Christian burial and Graveside Services will take place at the Mountain View Cemetery. He has been gone for a while. Yet never forgotten. Only visited a few times yet lasting memories times. With his youngest son passing recently. The memories proved to mean that much more. The family was a blessing of memories as well. The family has done much for people than the public would ever know. I met Evel at galphin ford . & then through Evel Day’s again as well as the family. As I said to him in Vegas as multiple times since “ to the family as we” thank you for the memories & listening to me. There are angels that God sends you & your surroundings. & when you are complete with your journey he will take you. God bless.

Rest in peace. Mr Knievel was entertaining to bring his craft to ABC's Wide World of Sports every weekend. The 1970's were the best because of him. Condolences to Mr Knievel's loved ones. You are missed.

It is not difficult to remember even now some 30 years later the sheer excitement of watching Evel Knievel on Wide World of Sports with my dad; even if it was a re-run that we have seen 10 times before. I was pretty young (around 7 or 8) when Evel retired, but I remember playing with the super-cool racing/jumping bike and action figure on my dad's pool table in our basement. All the neighborhood kids tried to emulate the legend and pretend that we were making jumps on our own pedal bikes just like he did on his Harley. In an age when there were few superheros in America, Evel always wore the red, white, and blue and made us all feel a bit stronger and taller as well as feeling like we truly lived in the greatest country that God created; and rightfully so. Rest in peace.

For Evel...

WEEP NOT FOR ME

Do not weep for me when I no longer dwell among the wonders of the earth; for my larger self is free, and my soul rejoices on the other side of pain...on the other side of darkness.

Do not weep for me, for I am a ray of sunshine that touches your skin, a tropical breeze upon your face, the hush of joy within your heart and the innocence of babes in mothers arms.

I am the hope in a darkened night. And, in your hour of need, I will be there to comfort you. I will share your tears, your joys, your fears, your disappointments and your triumphs.

Do not weep for me, for I am cradled
in the arms of God. I walk with the angels, and hear the music beyond the stars.

Do not weep for me, for I am within you;
I am peace, love, I am a soft wind that caresses the flowers. I am the calm that follows a raging storm. I am an autumns leaf that floats among the garden of God, and I am pure white snow that softly falls upon your hand.

Do not weep for me, for I shall never die, as long as you remember me...
with a smile and a sigh.

I wish, I had the chance to meet and speak to Evel Knievel just once. His life has inspired me in so many ways. He once said I know I can't make the jump, but I would rather miss it than let the people down. This is a brave Man with strong principles.

Evel made a HUGE impression on me as a young child and as an aging biker. I started riding at 11 years old and after many broken bones and laserations.......I`m still enjoying it at 52. My first bad bike accident happened at 21 and ended mobility as I had known it. Knowing all that Bobby had recuperated from over his many accidents helped me adjust to my new way of walking after months of rehabilitation.

I was thrilled in 2005 to know that our town was sponsoring a bike show(Chrome At The Dome) that would be highlighted by Evel Knievel ! I immediately got involved in volunteering ! Got the word out, put up fliers, signed up more volunteers, etc. My biggest thrill was when his brand new trailer arrived a couple days early. It had the rocket bike, a Harley jump bike, a Triumph jump/thrill bike, a Harley Heritage given to Evel by HD, cape, cane and more. Evel wanted the bikes unbolted, rearranged and rebolted to the floor of the new tour trailer. About 5 of us were involved in the changing around and Evel stopped by a couple times to check on progress and get info on Doctors in the area. He was not breathing well, between his illness and the very hot and humid weather. Even though very ill, and having much difficulty breathing, Evel signed hundreds of autographs and talked with hundreds of people. I was especially grateful to Paul(working with Evel) for introducing me to Evel and pointing out to him what I had done for the event. Evel thanked me and personalized several autographs for me. SOMETHING I`LL ALWAYS REMEMBER FONDLY !!!!

I have posted 10 pictures from the event in the photo album on this site also.

Thank You Evel for all the great memories................

puttin` down the road of life........R.K.

I met Evel once,in 1980.He was doing a charity golf tournament.Because of the large group of fans (most of whom were too young to have seen him firsthand,a testament to his drawing power),he signed his autographs with just "Evel".After he signed mine,I presented him with a drawing I had made for him.He was so pleased,he shook my hand, then amended his autograph to read in full,"To Peter,Happy Landings,Evel Knievel 1980".Sadly,that was lost in a fire years ago.I will miss Evel. His style will be copied but never duplicated. He belonged to that rare breed of human that includes the likes of Elvis and "Miss Elizabeth" Hulette. There was none before them, and there damn sure won't be any after. He's at peace now, playing all the golf and jumping all the canyons he wants.Thank goodness for videotape. Our grandchildren will see for themselves that we're not telling tall tales when we speak of the man called EVEL KNIEVEL!!

We just got back from Evel Knievel days racing the Supermoto race during the event. We had a chance to visit the grave of Evel and met a gentleman there that was a good friend of his and had nothing but kind words to say. It was the best ending of my weekend and very enjoyable to talk to him about one of my biggest childhood hero's! Thanks! Evel, Thanks for the great memories. RIP

Evel, you were my greatest hero as a 10 year old boy, watching in St. Louis Missouri in 1974 with my dad. He used to race Triumph. I watched, I dreamed, and I never missed the coverage of an event. You are inspiring to me to this day. I never give up, I'm a man of my word, and at 43 years old with two young boys,(10,14), I can still ride a mean wheelie. Your inspiration helped to make me the man and the successful business owner that I am.
Thank you dearly for the memories. Say Hi to Joe and Steve Williams up there for me! Godspeed brother! Your the best! There will never be another. Thank You

I met Evel in Clearfield Pa and visited with him after hearing his speech on how he loved his family and how family is first , speaking of his grandchildren and yes of Robbie also It was a very moving time listening to him. And after voicing no photos or autographs as they would be the next day at a scheduled time, he stopped to see me and take ONE Photo with me personnally , we again spoke on his birthday , It is wonderful to have known him and celebrate his life as he is in Heaven with God , having no pain and wearing that smile only he had ;-) Bless all of you !

In June of 1971, Myself and two co-workers were on Our way from a restaurant to work. As We passed over Interstate 90 on Walden Avenue in Buffalo, NY, We noticed Evel Knievel standing behind His Cadillac Eldorado, with a flat tire. I drove over the shallow median, and We gave Evel a ride to a local Gulf Service Station.
We pestered him with a bunch of questions, but He seemed to enjoy the notoriety. He asked Us if We would like to see Him jump 10 buses, and We said YES! He gave Us free tickets for that evenings performance at Lancaster Speedway. BTW: He handled that jump very professionally!
We Love You, and miss You Bro!

Mr. Knievel, I was in awe watching you back in the 70's as a young teenager. You made everyone stop and watch...even me! I enjoy watching your son do his thing, it must run in the family...May God keep you safe. God Bless you and your family.
