I learned of Roger's passing today, more than two weeks later, and immediately searched my camera for photos I could add to this guest book. Most of the images I have of him are in profile, because I was usually sitting beside him, my friend, at the science fiction conventions we attended. We shared a love of filk songs with a small group of convention friends -- adding new lyrics to existing songs to make them about sci-fi, fantasy, computers or other odd topics and singing them in the group. Raj penned some of the most entertaining songs, and was always up to a challenge when we'd think of even odder topics to turn into songs.
I had the honor of hearing Raj perform in St. Petersburg with The Alumni Singers once, and realized then why he was so good at harmonizing with all the singers at conventions -- he had the skill, practice and talent to understand music in a way I never will. The sharp wit that helped him win countless trivia contests served to inform his songs, adding depth and humor to what might otherwise have been a silly parody. His skills won him an invitation to perform as a guest at a convention outside Florida, with our friend M'liss.
He wrote a limerick for each episode of "The Simpsons." When he wasn't singing or trouncing others at trivia games, he often had his nose in a book. He usually wore the crimson-and-gold scarf to mark his preference for Gryffindor from the "Harry Potter" series of books. He, M'liss and I shared the same birth year. He always spoke with respect and love whenever he told us about his mom. He was a good man, and I will miss him.
