The morning Charlie died I was having coffee with my wife in SW Florida, enjoying a new sense of health after many chest surgeries. My daughter Rebecca in Chicago sent me a text message at around 9 a.m. that changed that feeling in an instant; "Charlie Trotter died!

To the Charlie Trotter Family,
We visited the restaurant starting with our first anniversary and going every 5 years. Our first visit Charlie took us through the kitchen and to the wine cellar. We left at 2:00 am. Charlie loved his craft and he certainly loved sharing the love of breaking bread with others. Heaven has a great chef and a truly good human being

Before Charlie opened his restaurant and up to closing,I was the fortunate recipient of his ceaseless generosity and support. He set a standard for the exceptional, that I continue to draw on to this day. I'm saddened that his family will miss all he had yet to accomplish, as I know he would have continued to impact the world around him. My sincere sympathy for his entire family.
May all the many, many wonderful times with Charlie continue to support them all through this time of profound loss.
Thank you Charlie

Dear Trotter family,

Our deepest sympathy goes to you at this time of great loss.

We remember Charlie from grade school days vigorously playing at Gilson Park with our son, Dwight. So quickly time flies !

They walk beside us every day;
Unseen, unheard, but always near; still loved, still missed and always dear."

He will be greatly missed!

God bless!

November 09, 2013
A true inspiration and the author of the first books I dared to attempt from in those first years out of culinary school. I remember so many times promising friends and colleagues "that this was our year to make the pilgrimage to Chicago to see his work first hand," but to bow to the pressures of work and lack of time that forced us to enjoy him through the fraying pages of our books. Truly inspired, Charlie will be missed

November 08, 2013
Our hearts are heavy. Charlie probably never knew, in total, how many people's lives he touched, encouraged, and even challenged. No task was ever beneath him. He led by example. He demanded one's best, even his own. He was a true, innovative, passionate, culinary artist. He was so gracious and generous whenever we saw him. We treasure his gifts, notes, and the amazing memorable dining experiences we shared at Trotter's. He was an extrodinary chef, an amazing man. Anyone who truly knew him saw his kind heart. Truly this is our loss! Our love and prayers go out to his family.

My son is also a chef several years younger than Charlie Trotter. He was an inspiration to my son and new him personally. My son enjoyed having that opportunity. He said Charlie Trotter was most considerate to him. This is a sad loss to all those in the culinary field.
November 07, 2013
I was very lucky to serve as the Publisher of one of Charlie Trotter's books--Gourmet Cooking For Dummies. The project was a pleasure to work on from start to finish for everyone involved. It was obvious from the start that Charlie Trotter was a big believer in teamwork. He shared his professionalism, his grace, and his hiqh-quality trademark in everything from writing the book to promoting it with his fans.

In addition, I was lucky to visit his restaurant on occasions for both business and pleasure. It was always a wonderful experience. My favorite part was seeing the beautiful menus that he created for dinner that night. The wait staff was always so genuine in asking about any allergies or other requests. And it was so special to see Charlie's mother lovingly talking to patrons and sharing her smiles and appreciation.

In addition to teaching us how to savor fine food, Charlie Trotter has now taught us how to savor each and every day we are here on Earth.

Thanks for everything!

My husband celebrated his birthday at Charlie Trotter's in 1999. It was a big deal for us to dine there. On the way out, we ran into Charlie, who graciously asked us how our dinner was. it was fabulous, we told him. He then proceeded to tour us through his kitchen. What a thrill and what a memory provided by a lovely person who didn't think himself too important to chat with any and all guests. I'm sure he will live on as part of many of his patrons' special memories. Thank you, Charlie.

November 06, 2013
My deepest sympathy for your family. God bless you.
November 06, 2013
It was interesting working with Charlie. He always challeneged me, Dan and the children. I guess I thought I new a lot about organic produce and fine dining--- with Charlie, I was just getting started. But one of his comments I really appreciated him making: He said, "Our watercress was the best he could get". Thanks to pools of water in our garden created by a city worker accidentally cutting a water line that never was fixed during the summer--- I thought that this would be a good environment to grow it. What we delivered is now commonly known as micro-green water cress. Micro greens are now well known and used often in fine dining. When we did it it was cutting edge...

Thanks Charlie for your patience with me!

Chef Trotter - and his philosophy - made me not only the cook I am but the human being that I am today. I owe him an incredible debt of gratitude for instilling in me what is missing in a lot of kitchens and lives: integrity. His contribution to the world as a perfectionist and bright light to all of us is priceless. May God rest his soul and I wish peace and blessings to his bereft loved ones, especially Dylan and his widow, who he loved dearly.

November 05, 2013
To the Trotter family, Our evenings in the beautiful kitchen watching Chef work with his brilliant staff and than enjoying a wonderful New Years Eve meal coupled with the most amazing wine was one of the happiest moments in my life! Not to be pompous, but to explain the drive for perfection of Chef Trotter, we had travelled to Paris that summer and made dining out a big part of our trip. While enjoying the dinner , I exclaimed, " this is the best meal I've had since Paris!" That was pure enthusiasm ringing through! Chef heard me and we began talking about where we had eaten. It was so much fun for a young couple! That was 1995. Then, two weeks later my sister and brother in law joined us from NJ for what would be an incredibly festive night which included Chef, his sommelier, a young "genius" the Chef professed proudly. we all had a great time and my family has a lovely photo to remember it all. This was pretty amazing as his restaurant was incredibly difficult to reserve, yet I was fortunate to receive a reservation inside the kitchen twice! No other chef was doing this at the time. When we were lucky enough to celebrate again, this time while expecting our first child, we could not wait to come back to the most friendly and delicious restaurant. That was 1997. We did make it back in 2006. I have one last story to share, I met his sweet mother who asked me to help a young family friend meet the ladies of the jr league and I could not wait to return a simple favor to the lady who raised a bright star! Chef Charlie Trotter was indeed a bright star that shined on so many happy souls. Rest in Peace. Family and friend, I I hope you find comfort knowing these simple stories. Thank you Chef Trotter! Sincerely, Mrs. Debra Stolbof, formerly of Lincoln Park

My deepest sorrow and tears to the family of the deceased. May these words bring you hope and consolation: "...Hear the promise God has made: He will call; the dead will answer. They shall live at his command. For he has a longing for the work of his own hand..."

I remember years ago dining at his restaurant and being invited into the kitchen. Of course the food was superb but so was his hospitality. I recall that evening as I remember him today. Thank you Chef.

So sad to hear. Condolences to his family on their unimaginable loss. My husband and I met waiting tables at Charlie's, so he will always be remembered fondly. He was tough, but he taught us a lot. I can still hear him "rise above it!", advice I still follow. RIP Chef.

Years ago we dined at his restaurant and were welcomed by him personally into his kitchen and chatted at great length. Of course the food was spectacular but his hospitality and interest in his guests were equal to it. Thank you Chef. I will always remember.

We will miss Charlie. I proposed to my wife at his restaurant, spent time speaking with his mother at the restaurant, toured his kitchen, got his book with his signature and personal message to us, etc.... Rest in Peace Charlie. You will be missed.
