Dear Fr. Tony,
Thank you for over 72 years of friendship, laughter, stories, vitality, example and love. As two only children of immigrant parents, we met in the first grade. I loved listening to your Father's stories of Croatia and later in life my parents were touched, when you came to dinner and spoke German with them. We were there to experience the joy of your Ordination, the subsequent Jubilees and your were there for their illnesses and funeral Masses.
You lived fully the unique personality God gave you, while also living a life of service following the footsteps of Christ. You, your band of Jesuit Brothers and other religious showed us by your lives what it means to be "the Church" among the people of God. While you loved to teach, you came to be among the newer immigrants to America as the Priest and Dominican Sisters were there for us as children. At your wake, I was consoled to see that your flock were as dedicated and moved by you as you were by them.
Over the past month, you told me twice you were "ready to go" and your beloved Lady of Guadalupe came and led you quietly and quickly to your just reward. While we were not ready to let you go, we know your protective presence and love remains with us. Auf Wiedersehen!
Love, Mary Ann
