Bill Rosen commissioned my book when he was at Free Press back in 2003. He was a wonderful editor as well as a delightful and fascinating person with whom to spent time. As an Englishman, I am long used to drinking a glass of wine at lunch in restaurants. Bill was one of the few NY publishers who didn't swallow deeply and say, Are you an alcoholic?! He left the Free Press before I finished the book; it was never the same afterwards. He really is an enormous loss as a writer, an editor and, above all, a really fine person.

Bill Rosen took a chance, hiring me as a young editor at Macmillan many years ago when I had very little experience. He was my ideal of the perfect boss, smart, funny, incisive, fair, got involved when he needed to but otherwise trusted you to do your job well. He gave you the space to grow, and he genuinely cared about the people who worked for him. Through my own career, I've tried to pay that forward. We fell out of touch after Macmillan was sold, but it was with absolute delight that I saw him so beautifully one-up Jon Stewart on The Daily Show--and you could tell Stewart was delighted as well. What a pleasure--that moment was such a pure expression of Bill. Jeanine, I am so very sorry for your loss. My thoughts and my very deepest condolences are with you and the children. Bill was a very special man, and I'll remember him always with the greatest fondness and gratitude.

I am so fortunate to have worked for Bill at my very first job. He will be missed. My thoughts are with his family and loved ones.

I am heartbroken. He was my co-author on Street Smart and one of the most brilliant and witty persons I ever met.
