Oh, how we miss dear Dave.
Personification of integrity
Epitome of honor
Gold standard of friend
Always the life of a gathering- the joy of a family. Could tell a story like no other.
Gave me the best laughs of my life.
Fun, gentle, caring.
The only thing larger than the hole created by his death is the  treasury of memories he has given us.
My love always to all the McMahon and Phelan families.

Hi Pops!
I visited the Grotto and lit a candle for you today. I know that was your special place, and I can always feel your presence there. Oh, and don't worry, whenever I need inspiration I still sit on one of your benches on campus!

Miss you dearly,
Michael

Dear Dad- I love and miss you very much. We have all been held up in this long year by our countless great memories of you and by the kindness of so many who loved and admired you. I talk to you all the time. Thank you for giving me a great road map of life. Thank you for always being a father and grandfather to be so proud of and a man to always look up to. Miss you. Still thinking about all of you. Many thanks for the blessings of David... lots to be thankful for as we approach this fall and upcoming holidays. I watched Michigan vs ND with Davey late Sat nite. Neither of us were pleased. Chester C. Chester

Our Clan is blessed with so kind and thoughtful friends during this time. Each of you have reminded us of our great loss in sweet and charming gestures, notes, flowers, food and prayers. We are uplifted in your strength and we will always cherish the efforts you made for us to carry our burden gently. We love you each and all. Bless you in this beautiful season so filled with hope and promise of a glorious future.

Thank you for taking the time to share kind (and sometimes funny) entries about our beloved Pops in this guestbook. It's been a source of great comfort during this trying time. We also cherish wonderful memories of this GREAT person: Poppy, David, Big Tuna, Dad. My personal favorite is my determined Father walking me down the sandy aisle last November, in his adorable bermudas and "compound" tie. Poppy, you shined the whole weekend and I feel so blessed to have celebrated with you! Your rendition of "Let there be peace on Earth" during the ceremony took it to 11. God bless you Pops, my amazing and beautiful Mother and wonderful siblings and relatives. We are blessed beyond measure. Love Margo

Dear McMahon Family,
Dan wrote today and told me about the death of your wonderful husband and father. I will always cherish this great man who loved his family and Notre Dame. He always came to Dillon to attend Mass after the Notre Dame games. Whenever I saw him, I felt better about life.
I remember that Cammy and her mother would walk him over to the stadium for a game and then I would see them walking back towards Dillon.
But I will always remember when Dillon was playing for the Interhall Football championship in the stadium. It was either Dave or Dan who said, "it means so much to our father that we are actually playing a football game in the stadium.
Your husband and father is what Notre Dame is all about.
I will say Mass for him tonight. I hope you all know how great he was and how much he was loved at Notre Dame.
Peace and Love,
Fr. Joe Carey
