He was a loving person. If it was not for him, I would not have got my braces. He used to tell me "you will have a million dollars smile". I miss him.
I am grateful for the loving memories I have of this very special person.
My deepest sympathy to Dr. Schaffer's family and friends. He was my dentist, but I wish he had been my father. He was one of the nicest men I have ever had the pleasure to meet. As a patient, he treated me, and I suspect his other patients, as well, with kindness, understanding, and respect that I have never seen in in all the years I worked in the health sciences. What a gem he was to all who knew him.
Erwin was a dear friend and fellow Dean. He will always be remembered as one of the "great leaders" of dental education in the United States and will be greatly missed.
Please accept my sincere condolences to his family on his passing.
Richard E. Bradley, D.D.S., M.S.
Former Dean, University of Nebraska and Baylor College of Dentistry
Great Uncle Erwin was a gentle loving man who we will always remember fondly and miss dearly. Our thoughts and prayers are with you and the family.
As one of Mike's daughters and a grandaughter of Erwin, I wanted to say how much all of your words mean. It is so wonderful to be able to see the many different roles my grandpa played in so many lives. I always thought he was one of the most special people in the world, and it feels good to hear that he had such an impact on the lives of others as well. Our family thanks you for your thoughts and condolences.
I'll remember my favorite baseball coach of more than 40 years ago.
I am saddened by the news of Dr. Schaffer’s passing and honored to have known him, worked for him and been considered a colleague. His contributions to dentistry and periodontics will be a lasting memory and testament to his greatness. Erwin Schaffer hired me to teach dental students in the Dept of Periodontics from 1973-76; probably the first dental dean to allow a dental hygienist to teach in the dental clinic. He was indeed a visionary who saw what was, what could be and then made it happen. He will be missed, but his memory lives on in the hearts and minds he touched over his lifetime. My thoughts and prayers are with his family at this very sad time.
My thoughts are with you and your family. I always think of your Dad as a generous fellow and a true gentleman. I'm certain that he will be missed by many. I mentioned his passing to my cousin Bill Urseth, who surprised me by saying that he knew him well from their days in the Rotary. He expressed high admiration and sends his condolences as well.
Dear Mike, Laura, and Nell,
At this most sad time caring thoughts and deepest sympathy are with you all. Erwin was a remarkable citizen of Minnesota and many wonderful memories will never be erased. What a dynamite he was in his profession with an impeccable quest for life. He was so giving of himself and will be deeply, sadly missed.
Thank you for allowing me over your home to play, hang out, and grow up over the many years as a teenager. You also took me under your wings at the Minneapolis Land Of Lakes Rotary Club and professionally furnishing references for my employment in my adult life. You will be deeply missed.
In my 47 years at the School I have never known a better person than Dr.Schaffer. Erwin was a dream of a human being. I grieve.
Mike, Nancy and Ann,
I am so sorry to hear of your dad's passing. He left a wonderful legacy. I hope to attend his Memorial Service.
Mourning the passing of treasured friend and colleague.
I consider my self to be very lucky to have Erwin as a colleague, mentor and friend. He will be truly missed by all. You are in my thoughts and prayers.
I FIRST MET ERWIN WHEN HE CAME TO OKLAHOMA CROW HUNTING-HE WAS A GOOD FRIEND, GOOD HUNTER, AND A GOOD SHOT. I SHALL MISS THE FELLOWSHIP I HAD WITH HIM OVER THE LAST THIRTY YEARS. MY THOUGHTS ARE WITH YOUR FAMILY AT THIS TIME.
Erwin was a wonderful man that I can't say enough good things about. He will be deeply missed and his memory will live on in the Schaffer family forever. My thoughts and prayers are with you during this difficult time.
