Tad was a man who cared for those he served alongside. Be encouraged. God is more gracious and capable than our circumstances would have us believe.

To Tad's family
Tad was my roomate while we were deployed in Basra. He made me laugh and he made us all laugh and that may be enough in war zone. Not a day goes by that I do not have at least one thought of Tad. I can not explain that so I simply accept it. He is not forgotten.

To the family of Maj. Tad T. Hervas:
As you may know, the Fort Snelling Memorial Chapel Foundation has honored your loved one at its Memorial Day Sunday worship service (each year in May) … since the time of your fallen hero's ultimate sacrifice. We will continue to pay tribute to our nation's veterans … lest we ever forget!
Now we would like to honor you … as the next-of-kin … who have also paid a great price on the altar of liberty. On Sunday 29 September at 11:00 a.m. we will host a Gold Star Family Sunday.
I would like to extend to your family an invitation to honor us with your presence at worship … as we pay tribute to your sacrifice. Our pastor, U.S. Army Chaplain (Colonel-Retired) Kenneth L. Beale, Jr., will preach a message entitled, “By Dying, We Live.” The special music will be the husband/wife vocal/piano — Wickman Duo. Following the worship experience, your family is invited to attend a social time in our Fellowship Hall … with some light refreshments.
As this historic chapel has limited seating, we would be happy to reserve seating for you and yours. To do so, kindly call (651/286-7296) and leave a voice message indicating your veterans' name and the number of persons attending. For more information about the Foundation or driving directions to the historic chapel at Fort Snelling, visit our website at: www.fortsnellingmcf.org
If you are not able to attend, we pray that you would find comfort in knowing that our prayers are with you and all of the fallen heroes.
Respectfully,

To the family of Maj. Tad T. Hervas:
The Fort Snelling Memorial Chapel Foundation will be honoring your loved one at the non-denominational Christian Memorial Day Remembrance worship service at 11:00 a.m. on Sunday, 26 May 2013. We will remember the casualties of the Global War on Terrorism from Minnesota … and the bordering states of Iowa, North Dakota, South Dakota and Wisconsin. Outside of the historic Fort Snelling Veterans Memorial Chapel will be a “Memorial Garden” filled with some 300 white crosses bearing the names of the war dead … including your loved one.
The Memorial Garden will be encircled with larger white crosses representing all of the wars of our nation's history and give honor to all who have served in the United States Armed Forces and made the ultimate sacrifice for the freedoms we enjoy today. Wreaths will be placed at the foot of each 8-foot cross bearing the number of U.S. Service Members killed in each of America's conflicts.
I would like to extend to your family an invitation to honor us with your presence at worship as we pay tribute to the sacrifice made by your service member and family. Our pastor, Kenneth L. Beale, Jr., will preach a message entitled, “Freedom:Free, but Costly.” At the conclusion of the worship hour, all of the congregation will be invited to silently pay their respects at the garden and there place poppies at each of the crosses. A Memorial Rifle Squad of the Fort Snelling National Cemetery will fire vollies as the US flag is lowered to half-staff and Taps is played. Following your visit to the Memorial Garden, your family is invited to attend an informal reception (weather permitting) outside of the Chapel. The Memorial Garden will remain until 5:00 p.m. on Monday, 27 May (Memorial Day).
As this Christian worship service has traditionally been well attended, we would be happy to reserve seating for you and yours. To do so, kindly call (651/286-7296) and leave a voice message indicating your veterans' name and the number of persons attending. For more information about the Foundation or driving directions to the historic chapel at Fort Snelling, visit our website at: www.fortsnellingmcf.org Special rates for nearby hotels will be available. For more information call (651/286-7296) or email the office ([email protected]) and leave your name and contact information.
Also, beginning at dusk (8:30 p.m.) on Saturday 25 May through dawn (6:30 a.m.) on Sunday, 26 May, a “Prayer Vigil for Peace” will be held in the sanctuary of the Chapel. You are invited to stop by, light a candle and place it at the foot of your loved one's cross in the Memorial Garden … and then enter the Chapel for prayer.
If you are not able to attend, we pray that you would find comfort in knowing that our prayers are with you and all of the fallen heroes.

Barb and Family,
This may be years later, but I was thinking about Tad and found this memorial for him. I served with Tad in Basrah and we were going to get together when he got back. I heard about his death that morning. I continue to miss him and his huge smile. He always had good things to say and never a bad word. I know your hearts are heavy as this holiday season continues without Tad and Ned but know they are together in a far better place. I will always keep you all in my prayers and never forget Tad.

Major Hervas,
My foreign policy seminar is putting together a biography of soldiers who fought and died in Iraq. We did the same earlier for Vietnam Vets who did not come back from the war.
I'm writing about you because you, like me, are a UMD Bulldog and lived in my state. You re-entered the Armed Forces after 9/11 which I find brave and heroic.
I hope that you have found peace wherever you are now.

Prayer for Peace
Lord, make me an instrument of your peace;
Where there is hatred let me sow love;
Where there is injury, pardon;
Where there is doubt, faith;
Where there is despair, hope;
Where there is darkness, light;
And where there is sadness, joy.
O Divine Master,
Grant that I may not so much seek to be consoled as to console;
To be understood, as to understand;
To be loved, as to love;
For it is in giving that we receive,
It is in pardoning that we are pardoned.
And it is in dying that we are born to eternal life.
Amen

I went to college with Thad in 1979-1980. I have an incedible snap shot of all the fun times we shared with Thad and 'dozens' of good friends back then up at UMD.
Thad was always a fantastic part of the many months of enjoying college life. There was not a weekend where we were not having a blast. I remember being in Thads room when the USA hockey team won the gold. Rice beer from Wisconsin runs and skiing at Spirit Mountain. A time forever remembered in my heart.
Though years have passed - I still smile hard when I think of the fun Thad appreciated everyday and his energy and sincere smile.
Bless his memory and bless his family. Praise the Lord in all things and never forget the fallen.

I served under him in E Battery out of Cloquet. Upon deployment I was a part of the group that was broken off and sent to Saudi Arabia so, I guess I didn't get the chance to truly see him as a Commander. What I did witness of him, however, was that her very much so was able to relate to us low ranking troops on our level. He didn't lord his rank over us and didn't see his rank as permission to disrespect us. He seemed to be a truly and genuinely warm hearted man. I didn't have to get to know him too well to know that he will be missed.

For you every single soldier
Those who served so honorable
Your life was forever altered
While I’m home safe and free
I stand with grateful admiration
I stand respectful and so proud
I know I’m only a civilian
And I don’t even know if it’s allowed
But I salute you; allow me the honor
to salute you with permission let me say
Even though I hold no rank know that from my heart
My humble gratitude comes from the deepest part.
I salute you.
For those missing in action;
for those who didn’t make it home.
I know you’re in God’s presence you are not alone.
For every neatly folded flag;
for every shattered family
I will do the only thing I know to dignify your memory.
I salute you, allow me the honor
to salute you with permission let me say
even though I hold no rank know that from my heart
my humble gratitude comes from the deepest part.
I salute you .

To Tad’s family and friends,
Our sympathies go out to all of you during this extremely difficult time. We had the pleasure of knowing Tad's sense of humor and seeing first hand his smile that spread like a wild fire over his face and to others.
Bob and he had a lot of fun fishing. We got to hear some of those stories. I grew up hearing about the dirty dozen and knowing what a great friendship they had together. Tad was very outgoing and could talk to anyone. He was a vital part of some diverse brotherhoods that shall be honored with his memory. We salute the man for taking on the mission that took him to far away lands to fight for what makes our country grand.
Hopefully you will find some comfort knowing others are grieving with you.

"Here's a toast, to the host, of those who love the vastness of the sky. To a friend, we send, a message of our brothers, men who fly. We drink, to those, who gave their all of old. Then down we roar to score the rainbow's pot of gold. Here's a toast, to the host of those who boast the U.S. Air Force.
Off we go, into the wild blue yonder. Keep the wings level and true. If you live to be a gray-haired wonder, keep the nose, out of the blue. Fighting men, guarding our nation's border, we'll be there followed by more. In echelon, we carry on, Hey! nothing can stop the U.S. Air Force."

For Cory - and Tad's family,
Please accept my deepest sympathies. It has been so many years since I've seen you, but not so long ago since I spoke with Tad - and he talked so much about you, and Dewey; and the fun times we all had at "the wheel". So many will miss Tad's smile, his kindness and his laughter. Peace be with you.

To Tad's family, it's with heavy hearts that we heard about Tad last week-the same week that we had our 30 year class reunion from Coon Rapids High School. Remember Tad's smile and sense of humor when you remember him because that is how a lot of us remember Tad! I am so proud that there are people out there like Tad that will give everything for others above themselves! Be proud of the person Tad was and feel blessed that you were a part of his life! May peace settle in your hearts knowing how many people are praying for you! Our thoughts and prayers are with all of you. Cindi, Johnathan and Hannah Miller
