Sheila:
I knew John all my life. He was two years ahead of me at Saint Marks and Saint Thomas Academy. My family was one of the many benefactors of his intense but gentle talents as a surgeon. John performed two emergency appendectomies on two of our children. He had the best bedside manor ever. I used to keep in contact with John through Carol's uncle Dr. Leo Zachman down at St Joseph Hospital in the Doctors' Lounge. Just last June 4th I had the pleasure of talking with John at a birthday gathering hosted by Roger. I had the opportunity to have an exchange with John about two subjects which he remembered well and gave us some good chuckles:
The first subject was our mutual recollection of when an airplane crashed on Iglehart Avenue between Finn and Cleveland in the summer of 1933. John was living with his family on the north side of Iglehart the second house west of Cleveland. I was living on Iglehart and Finn. John clearly recalled that he was riding his tricycle and watched the plane come down only a few hundred feet from him. We both recalled that the site of the crash was Gage Colby's house which was later occupied by Senator Eugene McCarthy.
The second subject was our recollection of some of the antics and appearances of the Crack Drill Squad of Saint Thomas Academy. John was a member of the Crack Squad and had some interesting anecdotes about it.

Little did we know it was our last chat. I will miss him at the future gatherings which he usually attended.

How fortunate we all are to have known him. Most especially you and your children. You can be sure that he is still looking out for you and the kids.

Sincerely,
John Markert

Sheila and family, Dr. John Culligan took such good care of my grandmother, Viola Gehlen, and comforted her husband, Dr. Joe Gehlen, during her surgery. He and Dr. David were very compassionate doctors.

My deepest condolences to the entire Culligan family, may your faith carry you through this difficult time.

Dear Culligan family,
we were saddened to hear of Dr. Culigan's passing. He was a great man and surgeon. He added 25 + years to our dad's life.
I worked at St. Joe's in Communications where Dr. 'C' would stop in just to say hello. He was always so humble and kind; always patient and caring about everyone and NEVER had a cross word for anyone. We are remembering him and you in our prayers. Thank you for sharing him with us.
