I just read of Ed's passing in the university magazine. He was a fantastic teacher who inspired everyone who learned from him, and I will always be grateful for the knowledge and wisdom he passed on to me and the wonderful memories of his classes at St. Ed's

I read today in the St. Edward's magazine that Dr. Shirley is gone. I am saddened that the world has lost one of its brightest lights so soon. I had one class with him my Freshman year (1993) and have seen him in the years since (twice hiking); he remained a vital character - the kind of person who made you want to find out what he doing and join him no matter what it was, because he made everything interesting. He was a role model to me for kindness, humor, intellectual vigor, spirituality, and owning who you truly are. His presence on this planet will be missed.

I met Ed at Order of Ecumenical Franciscan convocations. He was a god friend to the OEF. I will miss him, his good humour and his banjo. Rest in peace, Ed.

So Sorry I could not make services. I was director of the diaconate for a few years and could always count on Ed for a class. He was always positive, upbeat, and entertaining - a good formula for teaching and learning.
