I'm so sad to see him go my he RIP
I met him while I was on Spring Break in 2002. He was so nice and charismatic. Austin is losing one of it's greatest natives.
I was so sad to hear about Leslie. I had seen him for years going to work and always waived. Austin has lost a great person and we will always remember him with a smile.
I'm waiting for the day that there is a statue of you in your thong next to me. That's the least the City of Austin can do for you for all the free advertising you have given the city.
I have called Austin my home since birth and love everything about Austin. I can't say I ever had the pleasure of meeting Leslie, but I know this city will never be the same without his presence. He was a true Austin icon and will be dearly missed. RIP Leslie
leslie i met you over 20 years ago.i found you funny , very smart, and you always made me smile, noone else dressed like you downtown thats for sure...REST IN PEACE MY FRIEND
You will be missed,RIP...
The magic was nearly gone, but when Leslie came to town he seemed to rekindle it in some ways. Goodby dear friend; goodbye Austin.
My condolences to the family. May God give you the strength to endure this trial.
You knew you had become a legitimate Austinite when you could stand next to Leslie and think nothing odd was afoot. Great person - Great Austinite - Leslie will be missed
goodbye dear friend... you will be missed...
I feel so lucky to have "encountered" Leslie while visiting Austin. He wore a stunning, green out fit that showed of those enviable legs. Austin won't seem so happy to me now when I'm there. I will always be looking for Leslie. You will be missed, dear soul.
I remember you from Lamar Braker. The kids at Albertsons used to Buy extra sandwiches for you. You rarely passed up a chance to conversate or smile. Thanks for loving Austin! You were always kind to people even when they weren't kind to you. RIP Leslie.

Lesile was true friend who I personally knew for many wonderful years. We would sit down and have a cup of coffee, sometimes even a cigarette, I would ask his opinion on several personal issues and he would always find time to tell me what he thought was the best answer, I really enjoy those times.Leslie I love you and thank you for being such wonderful person and great friend, I will certainly miss you and your awesome, may we meet again one day.You are loved and I will never forget you.Enjoy those wings because you certainly deserve them.Your friend always!!!
I found out about Leslie's passing while celebrating St Patrick's day in a bar last night here in DC. It really gave me pause. He made weird normal and made the world brighter for it.
Back in 2004 when my I was living in Georgetown, my 18 year old nephew told me how excited he was to have met Leslie the night before when he was out with his friends. To him and his friends Leslie was just Leslie.
Thanks for being who you were and RIP.
From 1981 to 2004 I lived in Central Texas. It was always Leslie that made sure all the girls on 6th Street got a cab, made it out safely, were walked back to their girls if needed. God Bless You Leslie, he lent us our Guardian Angel for awhile and now he has taken you back home. We will see you again some day.
I've been in Austin from 1999 to 2012 and it has always been nice just knowing that Leslie is around. I might have only talked to him in passing, but Thank You Leslie for flying your flag and living out loud. God bless you and your loved ones.
I was only passing through Austin when I had the good fortune to meet Leslie and enjoy a minute in the light of his smile. I hope he's happy and keeping heaven weird in his wonderful way !
I've lived in Austin since 1974, and Leslie & I are born in the same year, 1951. I've seen Leslie downtown, smiling, talking, to everyone and anyone who came his way. "Keep Austin weird," will always keep Leslie's memory alive. My prayers & thoughts are with his family, and close friends who knew him, and whose lives are sadden, without Leslie being here. I know that Leslie's @ pease now, no longer homeless, no longer feeling the physical and emotional pain of his life's journey. I life up Leslie's family to God asking that they be comfort, with God's peace and love.
Austin will always be "weird, and eunique to us Austinites, and visitors, and passer through.
From Barbara Beal "BB"
I've lived in Austin, TX since 1974, and the most outstanding "Keep Austin Weird" was seening Leslie downtown being his usual self.
My prayers & thoughts go out to Leslie's family his mother & sister, and all of the lives that he touched, during his life on this earth. I know that he's @ peace now, no longer homeless, now that he has a home in Heaven. "Keep Austin Weird," will never be the same without Leslie's presence.
My prayers are with all who knew loved him. "Rest in Peace Leslie,...& Austin will always be weird.
all of us who want to keep austin as weird as possible owe it to leslie to be true to ourselves while remaining unconcerned about what others think -- within reason, of course. or not.

Goodbye! My dear Leslie! the day i found you unconscious along sixth street, and then seein you as the ems vechicle whisk you off to the hospital i knew it was the end!I know you are now in good care!
"Love is the immortal essence that allows us to be forever, for love is the arms of God. It is the thing that holds into eternity. It never dies~It never dies! It only becomes richer, deeper and freer. To be utterly god, you must utterly love and be loved in return," a Ramtha statement.
Leslie, you were -- as we all know -- one of a kind. You let us laugh and, through example, allowed us to be as weird as we wanted to be. When I first moved here, you were up on Braker Lane. I had a few conversations with you over the years; but you met so many people, I doubt you'd have remembered. You were always gracious, amusing and charming. A true star of Texas burned out when you passed. We will forever miss you.
Hopefully, an annual celebration in your honor will occur -- something like The Spirit of Leslie, crowning a new "queen" to reign for the coming year. Perhaps "she" would win a tiara, fish net hosiery and a pair of stillettos. Regardless, you were a rare person, indeed, who is irreplaceable!!
Always love and peace to you!
I was saddened to hear of your passing, you are what America needed, a loving and compassionate man, who didnt care what people that of you; I only meet you once and you changed my way of thinking. I will forever cherish our encounter. Missing You
I had just moved to Austin and was sitting at a traffic light when I saw this exquisitely shaped creature in a mini skirt and cleavage-displaying top wearing stilletos capped off with wavy blonde hair. I was jealous. Then Leslie turned around, I saw his beard and I had my first Leslie sighting. Leslie did make us all smile and was a true Austin icon. Thank you, Leslie!
Austin will never be the same. Thank you for the joy that you have brought so many. May your legacy of a passionate, free spirit be carried on through others. You will be greatly missed.
Thank you Leslie for making our hearts smile!
Rest in Peace Leslie!!! Thanks for Keeping Austin Weird! You will be so missed by and entire city, plus more~XOXOXO
We have lost a true Free Spirit. One who lived only to please others. Thank you so much for the joy and happiness you gave to so many. May this next great journey take you to a place where you can inspire and be inspired as well as share love. Rest in Peace.
Leslie, you gave so much to so many. To me you gave me many smiles, and always a lighter heart. You truly are a man who dances to a different drummer!
You are gonna look wild in those wings!!
Leslie, your free spirit and view of the world, without caring what anyone thought about you.. you just being you, has inspired me over the years.. It was such a pleasure to meet you and visit with you, and visit with you so many times over the years. May you be free and happy... May you be at peace.. Know that you live in the hearts and minds, souls of so many you have inspired.. Thank you to Leslie's family for sharing him with us.. May God bless you during this time... I'll miss you.. XOXO
Rest in peace..you will be missed!
So sorry to hear of Leslie's passing. He added a lot to Austin.
Leslie, thank you for all that you have given to us. You are truly one who will not be forgotten. Your spirit will always and forever be Austin.....
One less Austin icon... Godspeed Leslie. You brought joy to many, Austin style. Onward Thru The Fog.
Leslie...I will never forget my first glimpse of your tanned butt and legs prancing down 6th street. I loved you from that point on. Rest in peace dear Leslie. Natalie
My sympathies to all who were friends of Leslie. I remember commuting from south to north on the bus, talking with Leslie and another cross-dresser and we would be admiring each others shoes and accesories! I also enjoyed sharing my Kamel Reds with her. See you in the afterlife.
Angels walk among us, sometimes on stilettos. You taught us about unconditional love and made Austin a bit of heaven on earth, and now you are making heaven a much better place.
I will miss seeing you downtown, Leslie. You were truly unique and always brought a smile to my face with your quirky charm. Keep Heaven weird.
RIP Leslie--I remember seeing you on the street amongst friends and fans and thinking, you are a brave and shining Star. Austin will not be the same without you. Go and illuminate the charm God gave you in the heavens!
Last summer while in street ministry I met this man. I was looking for one of my ministry friends . He helped me with directions and I was able to pray with him. The prayer has been answered. God let peace come to this man . Rest in peace Leslie. brbruce from Caldwell.
Dearest Leslie...I left Austin in 2006 to pursue other "life" opportunities, but always thought that our paths would cross again very soon. When checking in with friends still residing in Austin, you often came up in conversation...I always loved hearing what you were "up to". Please know that you are truly loved and appreciated by so many...and we know that wherever you are, you're doing your part to "Keep It Weird"...take care, my "brother".
i will always envie your buns of steel.
love you leslie - your kind spirit lives!
The first time I saw Leslie was in the late 1990s. He was walking down N. Lamar in a schoolgirl outfit, carrying a bike wheel, smoking a pipe. He made me smile and forget I was stressed. I always smiled when I saw him. Thanks for all the smiles, Leslie.
Another bit of Austin's Heart has died. Rest in peace, you will be missed greatly. Sharon Spencer (Austin, Tx)
You were the reason I knew Austin was the place for me! I will miss you and the many slices of pizza we shared together. Rest In Peace My Friend.
Goodbye, Leslie. You'll be missed.
Thank you for the smiles, the laughs & the wonderful conversations. Austin just won't be as weird without you. RIP Leslie.
Leslie scared me to death the first time I met him - not because of who he was, but because I had no idea he was behind me. He just wanted to ask me to vote for him for Mayor! A part of what makes Austin "Austin" is gone and will be greatly missed!
Leslie, no one could ever fill your shoes or wear them with the style you had. Thank you, so much!
Leslie, you were always my favorite part of visits to Austin..you will be truly missed..?
Leslie ... may heaven find you in peace and harmony. You gave Austin a lot of its character and pizzazz and reminded many of us that we can always laugh at life and occasionally just be ourselves, no matter what age. Thank you, darling!
We will miss seeing & talking to you. You will always be remembered..loved the pink tutu. Your Austin Friends
We will miss seeing & talking to you. You will always be remembered..loved the pink tutu. Your Austin Friends
WHAT AN EMPTY PLACE.. GIVE HER A STATUE TO HONOR WHAT SHE HAS DONE FOR AUSTIN.. SHE REALLY PUT IT ON THE MAP IN A GOOD WAY... KEEP AUSTIN WEIRD FOR SURE.. A BIG STATUE OF LESLIE RIGHT ON 6TH STREET.. THONG AND ALL.. YES!!
REST IN PEACE LESLIE..
A true artist and authentic human. Austin is a much darker place without you. I wish I had the guts to say something to you all those times I saw you. My loss, Heaven's gain.
When I heard you wanted to leave I was so sad. Did CO deserve you? Perhaps if we stepped up our game you would change your mind and stay? No One will ever know But surely the man upstairs had a whole new audience for your arrival. It is our loss, for beyond the outter clothing was a man of amazing character. Austin will indeed miss you. RIP
Gone but certainly never forgotten
You made Austin who it is today Leslie. We will miss you, but never forget you!
R.I.P Leslie, you were a true Austin Icon!
R.I.P. Leslie, you will be missed. Thanks for the good times...
Do not stand at my grave and weep,
I am not there; I do not sleep.
I am a thousand winds that blow,
I am the diamond glints on snow,
I am the sun on ripened grain,
I am the gentle autumn rain.
When you awaken in the morning's hush
I am the swift uplifting rush
Of quiet birds in circling flight.
I am the soft star-shine at night.
Do not stand at my grave and cry,
I am not there; I did not die.

I always saw Leslie on my way to work when I traveled up 51st street and he always made me laugh. He was eccentric but then again we all are to some degree. RIP Leslie and God Bless. I'm sure you have your angel wings now.
A candle to light your way home. Prayers for you and to your family. Rest in Peace
I'm half a world away in SE Asia and yet word of Leslie's passing brought a tear to my eye. I only met him once but it will always be a fond memory. Austin will go on but without Leslie, it will be like the Mona Lisa with a little bit less of a smile. Thanks Leslie for making life a bit brighter for all of us.
David O (Chiang Mai, Thailand)
Leslie, you were an icon of Austin history and your memory will live on forever. I too have had the honor of being asked if I knew Leslie when I have said I lived in Austin, and although I only met Leslie a few times in brief passing, it still made an impression on me.
Leslie. I cherish our wonderfully random conversations and the beautiful and honest insight you always offered me, which I live by still today. You are not weird, just misunderstood! You will always be in my heart. God be with you and Bless You always.
I barely knew you, but Austin will never be the same without you. We already miss you, Leslie!
Leslie a true Austin Icon! May you rest in peace... I know you're in Heaven wearing one of your 'outfits'! Shine down on us as we remember you always! We will miss your smiling face and your wave of grace... As a Austin Icon, you should have a life size statue on 6th Street aka to some of us, 'Leslie Street'....God Speed Leslie.....
You always made my night running into you downtown! Austin Texas will miss you!
Miss you, my friend. Instead of talking to myself all the time, i'll just talk to you.
R.I.P.Leslie, i will miss you!!!!!!!! Lili Hart
My heart is heavy with sadness because Austin has lost a true Icon...Leslie was Intelligent, friendly and funny weird. I had the honor of sitting with him/her at the Forum and consumed a few drinks, we talked politics and her life style choice. Goodbye Leslie...our loss is Gods gain of a beautiful soul...now you're an angel. May you Rest In Peace.
Years ago I was in London. The Brits recognized my 'American' accent and asked where I was from. I proudly replied I was from Austin, Texas. The FIRST question asked was if I knew Leslie! That was around 1997.
Leslie was not 'from' Austin...Lesie IS Austin. I am so very happy and proud that you were (and will continue to be) OUR world Ambassador and the one, true sovereign Queen!
Leslie, you always had a smile and a hello when downtown was my neighborhood. You will live on in our memories. Rest in peace.
u will be missed Leslie u were a very energetic person and u brought life to austin tx
Goodnite My Prince(ss) its a sweet dream now.. and I guess we are even. (I gave you all that lingerie I could never fit into again!! Austin will miss you.
Leslie, you will always be remembered...Rest in Peace, now!
first saw you as I rode the Austin transit. I thought What the heck. You were to cool RIP my friend
I first saw Leslie in 1999 on Congress St from a Dillo bus traveling from UT to my job at the Austin Childrens Museum. My initial reaction was shock as I thought is that man really just wearing a tank top and thong. I soon discovered he was an Austin icon and would enjoy pointing him out to friends and family who would come to visit.
My condolences to his family. Leslie will be greatly missed and Austin will be less bright without him.
You will always be in my heart! Rest In Peace.
I never knew you, but you were awesome. Rest well.
I'm so glad I got a chance to meet you when I lived in Austin. There will never be another pair of legs like yours! Long Live Leslie!

Leslie, I will always hold a place in my heart for you. Rest in Peace, dear one.
Leslie put the weird in Austin and that's a weird we will never get back. You will be so missed Leslie but we will never forget you!
I wish I would have gotten my picture taken with you while I had the chance. Austin is a little less weird without you.
You were never scared nor shamed to be yourself at all times. Wish more people could be that free :) You were a true Austin ICON.
Friendships are everlasting! It was great having you as a neighbor! 78704 and all of us in SoCo and South First will miss you. Rest in Peace my friend.
In loving memory of a wonderful person. We will love you and miss you always.
Leslie Cochran was a very special person. Although his appearance may have been considered as “weird” by many people's standards, at least he had the courage to stand up and speak out for what he believed in and for the rights of others. And I will always admire and honor him for that.
For all the times I had the pleasure of talking with Leslie Cochran, perhaps one of the most memorable was the evening about 9 years ago down on South Congress while celebrating my oldest daughter's 21st birthday. As I greeted him and introduced him to my daughters, explaining what we were celebrating — Leslie generously joined in with our celebration by taking off the red belt he was wearing at the time and giving it to my daughter as a birthday present.
40+ years ago, Austin, Texas was not at all about who-you-are or what-you-have. It was just Austin. And I thank God for allowing so many of us old-timers the opportunity to have been reminded of all of that by having known Leslie Cochran for a while.
Leslie Cochran will be missed, but always remembered by those of us once knew Austin the way it used to be.
Now cracks a noble heart. Good night, sweet prince. And flights of angels sing thee to they rest.
You were quite the favorite of mine here in Austin, enjoyed our conversations and your happy disposition...our town for sure will not be the same..Rest in peace...
We will miss the dog treats! Take Care.
You always made me smile when I saw you. It was a pleasure and privilege to have conversation with you over a few beers. I never took it personally when you refused the Italian leather shoes I gave you one time because they didn't have high heels :)
Rest in peace Leslie, may you find what you were looking for in God's hands with him knowing how positively you affected us all here in Austin.
From the first time I asked my friend who he was, as he stood out in the restaurant I was at 9 1/2 years ago when I first moved here to my UT Law clinic representing him though the years, I've always enjoyed seeing him and the times I met him. I will always remember our last conversation on 6th street and him remembering me from the clinic. R.I.P. Leslie.
R.I.P. Leslie. You will be so missed. Austin won't be the same without you.
I just saw you a month ago...I should have stopped and talked with you. My loss. You will be missed!
Leslie, a beacon of light, who opened so many blind eyes, helping us smile on dark days as we passed your way and teaching us with unspoken words, how beautiful our unique differences are.
...high heels, fishnet stockings, a thong bikini and now beautiful wings.
Austin will miss you Leslie, But I know you are having a blast!
Leslie, thanks for making this town, and the world, a weirder place! RIP
Keep heaven weird now Leslie.RIP
I am so sorry god called you home early. It was much to soon. I will miss the coversations, the laughter and the serious talks. You have made a big impact on Austin and my life. There can be no replacement for you. Goodbye my friend.

Thank you for your time in Austin, Leslie. You made so many people smile. We will continue to smile when thinking of you. I know there is lots of color and character in your heaven.
Leslie, it has been said over and over....but I say it again...Austin is just a little less wierd now without your presence...but your Spirit will live on and on. RIP Leslie. <3
Your presence is missed already. I remember you standing on the corner of Lamar and Braker at the Albertsons. You were always true to yourself... something we all could do a bit better. Rest in peace.

Lesile, you're a legend. No one could do it like you did. You were a brave soul, to start the understanding of not judging people. May God cradle you.

Leslie, your being You allowed me to be Me. Thank you!
So many fond memories of Leslie. My favorite was just small talk about a beautiful summer day on the patio at Taco Deli on Barton Springs.
Leslie Cochran appeared in the 1999 Gridiron Show. While Danny Hermosillo sang his composition "Livin' La Vida Leslie" (a parody of "Livin' La Vida Loca") Leslie paraded in drag on the stage. It was a highlight of the show.
I remember Leslie performing in the 1999 Gridiron Show. Danny Hermosillo wrote and performed a parody song, "Livin' La Vida Leslie" to the tune of "Livin' La Vida Loco" while Leslie paraded on the stage in drag. It was a highlight for the show.
I 'll miss our talks hanging out in front of the bars on Six Street. You may have never been Mayor of Austin but you'll always be Mayor of Six Street to me Leslie. You'll be missed.
I remember seeing you riding your bike after I first moved here and I thought "This is the place for me". I love your confidence and unique character. You were always a joy to converse with when I encountered you. Thank you for "Keeping Austin Weird" and for all the smiles you brought to me. I love you!
Ahhh Leslie. Thank-you so much for the hours of conversation and the pleasure of watching a very brave soul shine through. We will miss you much. RIP
Rest in Peace - Here is a Musical Tribute:
Armadillo (Ode to Leslie Cochran) by Barebones Orchestra
i loved your confidence... there will never be any one else like you..
It is uncanny that some of your last expressed thoughts were about leaving your beloved Austin, Leslie. I'm with you on that one too my friend - Austin just isn't the same town of 20 years ago. May you rest in peace in the knowledge that you finally got to go somewhere so much more peaceful than here. May the Lord embrace and keep you in His arms forever.
I waited on you a few times at the "Sirloin Stockade" when it was on N. Lamar. You always made my day.

Good night, sweetheart, and rest in peace. Your creativity of mind shook a lot of people up, and made the city of my heart a better place.
Sporting a spotted tiger thong, and not much else, my girls and I brushed into Leslie at the entrance of SpamaRama quite a few years ago. We turned the corner and his banana hammock was about eye level with my girls, at about 2 feet distance. I noticed that they noticed, but no words were spoken. How do you explain that to young ones? Brand new to Austin, I just stepped knee deep into "Keep Austin Weird". Wouldn't live anywhere else.
There will always be only one Leslie. RIP.
For ever Austin will hold a place for you,, downtown 6th street is not going to be the same,, thank you for all the great long years

Anne E. Gehrlein , San Antonio
Austin won't be the same without you Leslie, Keeping the otherside weird now... ATX will never forget you!
It was on 6th and congress that I first spoke with you. I was driving a city bus. And you smiled when i opened the door and said hello. I would go by everday at the same time. And you would be there with a great big smile. you would make my day a little brighter. Will see you when we get there. Rest in peace.
Never had a chance to have a beer with this dude. My loss. Peace!
I spoke with you briefly at the last Eeyore's Birthday Party at Pease Park. You were nice, courteous, and made everyone near you very comfortable. Very friendly and outgoing guy. Hope that you lived the life that you wanted. I want to enjoy life as much as you did.
Rest in peace, Leslie. Austin won't be the same without you.
Rip Leslie! You have left a lasting impression in ATX
There will never be another quite like you Leslie. Here is a little ditty I think I think you would enjoy, "Freckles on her Butt"(The Freckle Song):
I saw him in half priced books. Say what you will he was a smart guy and an Austin icon. I known he will be missed by many. Rest in peace in your hot pants and go go boots, buddy.
Oh man! Can only imagine your last thoughts! I hope you did go in peace with your family by your side....Dance the night away Leslie. You're the only reason I have to wear heels, boa and embrace the FREAK in me. For myself in your memory, I'll be true to myself and keep on being weird.
Leslie truely an original personality.
We left Austin six years ago, but one of our fondest memories is of Leslie. He was truly an Austin icon of the weird that is so happily Austin. Part of that fun is now gone, but we thank Leslie for the fun--you will be missed.
I remember Leslie when I was myself roaming g 6to th street in the late 80s.
I can't believe leslie is gone. I'm 29 years old and I still remember the first time I seen Leslie I was 13 years old hanging out in downtown and I seen Leslie for the first time. I will always look up to Leslie as a human being and a role model not because Leslie was weird but because he knew who he was. Not everybody can understand the person Leslie was but I could and I could see Leslie the real Leslie. I just seen him a couple months ago and he was still the same and I remember a customer looking at him in a very rude way but I just smiled at Leslie and told him have nice day and told him bye he was always so sweet and anybody who looked at him in a bad way it's because you can't understand the kind of person he was. Thanks for being here Leslie you will always be remembered by me.
I still remember the first time I saw you on Sixth St. It was propably 15 years ago. Austin is a little less Austin without you.
Thank you for the memories and the love! You will be missed!
seen u once or twice but never met u , but heard of u.. U will be missed. & the leslie day and statue is a good idea
I remember being with some friends and you just strolled by in a pink thong. It was the first time that I had ever seen you, but I liked you immediately. I remember that we gave you some cigarettes and chatted for at least an hour, until it was time for you to stroll off in the night.
You're a good person who will be missed. Rest easy, brother.
Leslie, you will be so very missed.
I never met you, personaly. but I do remember seeing you around Austin.
Austin, Tx. has lost a very special person. I am in favor of a statue of leslie Cochran. WE HAVE TO KEEP AUSTIN WEIRD. Leslie go with God. rest in peace. Greg Hill.
I never got to see you or meet you but have heard many stories!!! You are an icon and forever be a ledgend!!! I agree with naming this day after you and agree with the statue!!! You will be missed very much and always in our hearts!!!
Here is a man who knew life as it was meant to be. FREE. I will not forget.
Fair sailing on tranquil waters, Amigo!
You will be missed Leslie
Leslie you showed people how to live life to the fullest. I met you while living on the streets of Austin and you always brought a smile to my face no matter what was going on. I have been blessed in having met you as many others have. Thank you for being you. God bless
Leslie was our first welcome to Austin and made us so excited to be in a city that embraced uniqueness. Leslie will be missed terribly.
I will miss seeing you around Austin. I am in favor of a statue located at your favorite corner. You helped Austin be unique, to say the least. Godspeed on your journey.
Austin wont be the same. Thanks for you being there...
In honor of the man that made Friday nights on 6th street so much fun! RIP Leslie....you will be greatly missed.
Thanks, Leslie, for your kind heart and for the flavor you brought to Austin's streets. What a bright star Heaven has gained today. Go with God, Austin's "weird" friend.
Bon Voyage! You made our lives better.
It is an honor to have meet such a one of a kind diamond in the ruff you have been such an inspiration to many and will always continue to be. You are always gonna be known as Austin's number 1 celebrity and Icon.Divas get remembered but Legends never die keep heaven WEIRD cause now Austin will always feel weird without you. rest in peace! we'll carry on the legacy of weird!
Providing color to a place with one's existence is a noble occupation. Now that you have accomplished that, rest in peace, Leslie.
My prayers are with you and your family. We will surely miss you, Leslie.
Leslie, you were this small town girls first big city story to share with family. A bearded man in a hot pink bikini & heels on 6th St! You were a breath of fresh air & reason to smile. I'll never forget you & will make sure my children know that once upon a time there was this courageous icon with such style & flare! You will be missed.
Long ago my friend we rode to Katz and I bought you dinner. THANK YOU for accepting my offer and for being a great human. You were the best. An amazing voice for ... well... for being you <3
Thank you, Leslie, for being you.
You will forever be missed!
In Mesa, Az we had a personality like Leslie who was loveable and memorable. I know how hard it is for a community to lose someone like that. May he rest in peace and may God be with him, his family (blood related and not blood related) and friends and the community as they deal with his loss. The more I hear about him, the more I wish I had met him. God Speed Leslie!
Prayers for you and to your family. I know you will be missed by everyone.
Austin's loss, Heaven's gain.
if anyone knows more about this rumored Leslie statue, please keep the Statesman in the loop. As the "F1 era" creeps in it's more important than ever that we celebrate those that helped establish Austin's identity and make it the desirable place that it is to so many these days. You'll be missed, Leslie.
Leslie,You will be missed and loved in our hearts. You kept Austin weird, but now Austin will be weird without you...R.I.P.
Leslie ~ RIP, Heaven just got another bright STAR!
Leslie, you always put a smile on my face. You'll be missed by so many people. Thanks for giving Austin so much love.
Ill always remember you..Leslie, Austin will miss you dearly.I hope you find comfort in where you at!!
Thanks Leslie for variation and change to the Austin area. We are all God's children created in his image and we should remember, NONE of us are perfect and we all have different ideas and challengers, thats what makes us unique. It would be a boring world if everyone was like everyone else.
To the people in Austin who disagreed with you, remember what I said. We can disagree with someone and not be hateful but still be friends. Shalom to you.
Thank you for being a stranger in a strange land, Leslie. Sending thoughts out into the cosmos. Friends and family: consider this a hug.
Thanks for all the entertainment you've given Austin's visitors thought the years! There will never be another “Leslie” You will be missed!
You were pure magic. A significant facet of Austin has passed with you. Thank you for being you.
Godspeed Leslie...you have lots of people upstairs to make smile now.
Sorry that your time here on earth was so short, Leslie - thank you for being you, and showing all of us how it's done! You will be dearly missed!
Leslie- Your presence in Austin made me realize this is where I belong- where being an individual is really honored and respected. I am so sad my children will never have the chance to meet you.
Thank you Leslie for your enthusiastic support and appreciation of our music.
Four Pegs and a Pug
I first meet Leslie at a parade and he had "Kiss This " (for the police) written on his bottom....cracked me up. A true free spirit, made me laugh. Keep it wierd Leslie, you will be missed
At one time, way back when, Leslie was quite the "mountain man". No costumes or g-strings. Just a good hearted, kind man. When I was mayor, sometime between 2002 - 2005, "Alicia Leslie" came back to the valley. Quite the stir in our small town.(900 or so people) Oak Creek accepted him as well, but Austin was his home. He was an old soul. RIP my friend.Thank you good people of Austin.
Seeing Leslie made moving here from SF less painful. He always made me smile.
It's hard to believe you're really gone... you'll be missed Leslie. It was fun chatting with you the times I was heading to ACC. Hope you have a safe journey and hope to see you again someday
Condolences to the family. Leslie will be greatly missed. My time at UT wouldn't have been the same without him. Austin will never be the same without him, but his legacy will carry on.
You have always kept Austin Alive. Missing you dearly.
Farewell Leslie, Thank you for keeping Austin Weird. You made us smile and laugh, you will be remembered by many.
Thank you Leslie, you were and always will be known as Austin's "Leslie." Strange, I just asked a UT Student if she had heard of you and she said no. Unfortunately, now she has.......Enjoy Heaven Leslie!
Leslie: you were one of a kind. I can just see you strutting your stuff in heaven. Rest in peace.
Rest in peace, my friend.. we're gonna miss you
Rest in peace, you will be missed! You were the best asset of Austin, Tx

Heaven is lucky to have you.. You Keep Heaven as wierd as you kept Austin! Youre still here with us and we'll keep on with your Legacy.. May you RIP.
Leslie "Ya know everybody wants to take pictures, but they don't pay me anymore!" You're great, and definitely will be missed! -Rose B
Cheers Leslie! You will be missed. We will share your story with our future generations.
Leslie once rode by my sister and me on his bike. We were walking to class at UT. He was wearing a leopard thong and had a big bam bam bone in his hair. He sure knew how to cheer people up! We will miss you Leslie!
My mom introduced me to Leslie when I was 8 back in '83. That man has been in my downtown life for almost 30 years. It will not be the same knowing that I am never going to bump into him ever again. The whole city will miss you my friend. R.I.P.
You will always be remembered in the hearts of Austin.
Today Austin has officially become a little less weird. You will be missed!!
Good Bye to Austin's favorite icon! I'll never forget the priveledge of dancing in the middle of 6th street with you as so many of us did! You will be greatly missed and fondly remembered! R.I.P
Safe journey Leslie, to wherever the weird wander in the hereafter. You helped make Austin a town in which I could relate and feel accepted and for that, I will be forever grateful.
Keep the after life weird, Leslie. We'll miss you here.
You were, and still are, an awesome person. Helped Austin stay wierd, no matter what it will be passed on thru generations. Thank you for everything youve done during the years. You'll be in our hearts. RIP and the heavens will be honored to have you!
I first saw Leslie in 2000, My daughter was 6 years old at the time. It was Christmas time and we had taken a ride downtown Congress to see the Christmas lights. We were headed North on Congress toward the Capitol and stopped at the light at Riverside and Congress. My daughter was in the back seat in her car seat and she suddenly said, "Mom look!" I looked at her to see what she was wanting me to look at .. and she was looking out the right side window ... there was a person on a 10 speed bike, had come to a stop at the light...... It was Leslie wearing a red thong with a cotton ball on his behind, had a Santa red and white Cape and a santa cap. I had heard of Leslie and his appearances around Austin so when I looked.... my first thought was... "that's Leslie" I was not sure how to explain it to my 6 year old daughter...... I merely smiled and she said Mom I like her Santa outfit. I agreed with her, the light changed and we watched as Leslie rode off toward the Capital down Congress. my daughter is now 18 years old and when she heard Leslie passed she was sad and said that she will always remember Leslie at Christmas time and the first time she ever saw Leslie riding down Congress in her Santa outfit. Thanks for the memory Leslie! RIP
Thank you, Leslie, for keeping our sense of humor often strong, sometimes politically incorrect, and always weird. You are remembered fondly, even if you did choose to continue wearing white after Labor Day...
Leslie, Thank you for opening our hearts and minds. You are a treasure to be remembered always. Austin is a better place because of you. You will be missed more than you know.
Aw, today you will be missed but I know you are as happy as can be in Heaven. Say Hi to my dad for me Leslie. You will be missed.. RIP..

Leslie you will be missed. Thanks for keeping Austin wierd!!
May you rest in peace friend. You will be missed, and never forgotten.
Leslie , thank you, you had a way to bring a smile to so many people's faces in AUSTIN,, YOU MADE AUSTIN, AUSTIN YOU BE MISSED..
Leslie. One of a kind who had the coutrage to follow his own star. You leave a trail of memories in the stardust. thank you!
I always loved people who..."Travel To The Beat Of A Different Drum"...keep bangin' that drum, Leslie !
Thanks for making it easier for all of us to express ourselves. Austintageous you made it real
We will miss you, Leslie. Thanks for showing us how to live each day in celebration. Godspeed, sweet spirit.
You will be missed and thanks for all the good times! I will have to give your backstage passes to someone ells now. RIP Leslie!
Rest well Leslie. You have given so much to Austin. We will miss your light.
I met Leslie about 3yrs ago and took a pic with him. And I thought wow he is VERY unique and he will be missed in Austin!
I met Leslie on 6th in 2001. I was by myself looking for a place to party. We had a nice long chat. True to form Leslie was dressed in fishnets accompanied by a boa. I had hoped our paths would cross again. RIP Leslie
I'll never forget the first time I saw Leslie on Congress Ave. I always looked forward to seeing him after that! I always thought it was Leslie who made "Austin weird" and I loved him for that! You will be missed by my family and I. Leslie...keep strutting your stuff in heaven!
Thank you for all of the stories and the smiles that we Austinites will hold near and dear for years to come.
Leslie's passing was quite a shock to me, I recently spoke with him after he had stopped in at a local Austin coffee shop where my band was playing. Leslie came up to the stage and grabbed a mic and encouraged the audience to "tip the band", then he threw a $5 tip in our tip bucket and left shortly thereafter. This is just one example of his generosity and support of local musicians, but I'm sure that many folks around Austin would have similar stories to tell.
Leslie will be surely missed, God rest his beautiful soul.
Dear Leslie, thank you for keeping Austin weird. We will miss you. You were always colorful, kind and very smart. Austin has suffered a great loss. We love you and we will always remember you.
I am grateful you lived life as yourself; sad that you are gone. Thank you for your big-hearted self. You are missed and mourned.
He was like a modern-day Diogenes, challenging our ability to tolerate people not like ourselves. For the most part, Austin passed the test.
Leslie was proof that Austin had the heart and soul that it claimed to possess. And he understood joy.
I'll miss knowing that he's around, even if I only saw him a few times (and he always made me laugh). A Leslie sighting turned a bad day around every time.
Perhaps more than anybody, his life was important to the wonderful wierdness that Austin has become. I hope that spirit will not disappear.
Thanks for seeing things in there on beauty.. It was a pleasure to meet you back in the day !!!!!
Living on your own terms takes courage. Living on Leslie's terms took fabulous.
I went to Austin and stayed on 6th Street where I met Leslie, sweet man, great fashion sense. You will be missed!
Truly an Austin icon!!! You will be missed Leslie!! May you R.I.P
A few years ago a friend of mine was stationed in Iraq and requested an autographed picture of Leslie. My friend worked with a Marine pilot who had visited Austin and while driving down Congress Ave saw a man in a g-string and a tiara, a Leslie sigthing!!! I got a couple of 8x10 pictures of Leslie and he gladly signed them for me and I mailed them to Iraq. Leslie wound up being a Iraq war 'pin-up' at Camp Victory. I heard the marines and other troops created a little shrine around his 8x10 picture.
Austin won't be as weird without Leslie holding court in a UT cheerleaders uniform at 6th and Congress. RIP to a city legend.
Leslie, my good friend I hope you remember to take your bikini on your one heck of a ifetime trip. I'm sure you'll fit right in - can't wait to meet again.
Thanks for keeping Austin weird all of those years! This town will never be the same without you. You were one of a kind! You will be missed!
Thank you Leslie. Those of us you leave behind will carry on.
First time we met Leslie "up close" was in 2002. He was "holding court" on the ACL shuttle bus. Last time we saw him was in 2010 at ACL. We'll miss you, Leslie. RIP.
An absolute Austin icon. He will be missed!
Leslie, you gave us reason for smiles. You've likely found the busiest corner in Heaven by now. RIP.
A unique life and person gone too soon....
Leslie, hope you wear something FABULOUS when you enter the heavenly gates!
You will be missed, Rest In Peace!
I met Leslie during my first few weeks in Austin. I was at this pizza place off of 6th with a friend where they were blaring disco. All of a sudden, this guy in a g-string and heels burst in and started dancing in the middle of the restaurant, and everyone cheered him on.
After he left, my friend pointed out this mural of local celebrities that was painted on the wall; Leslie was right up there with Sandra Bullock and Willie Nelson.
RIP, this city won't be the same without you.
RIP LESLIE!! MAY THE ANGELS SURROUND YOU IN HEAVEN!!!!!LOVE YOU!!!!
RIP Leslie, we sure will miss you here in Austin.
RIP Leslie, keep the afterlife weird!!
I hope you are rockin' the thong and heels in heaven today, Leslie! You are missed and 6th at Congress will never be the same without you!

I moved to Austin 8 years ago and remember well seeing you on 6th street with all your glory. I felt Austin that day. Rest in peace sir.
Rest in peace. I live out of town and saw you twice in my life. You definately add to the joy of Austin. Your spirit lives on with independent living people all the time.
Sometimes humble beginnings produce greatness! R.I.P. Leslie!
Keep Heaven weird Leslie...
Leslie, My entire family loved you. My Mother lived in Austin years ago before she passed and she loved going downtown to see Leslie. I am sure she was waiting for him in heaven and of course loved his shoes!
I'll always remember looking down from the stage at the old metro to see you enjoying one of our shows and the effect you had on the roadies from Savatage as they were trying to unload a hefty flight case before a show and dropped it as they looked at you walking past the tourbus. It's probably been said hundreds of times already, but Austin is a little less wierd today and that makes me sad. R.I.P Leslie
I saw him in town on occasion, and avoided speaking to him because he didn't look like he wanted to be bothered. Let him strike first, was my theory. I think leaving him alone was the right thing to do in my case. Strangely enough, I had a grudging admiration for him and seek to fill the void he left.
RIP Leslie....the Austin City Council could have benefited from your leadership.
Thanks for the fun, laughter, pictures and wonderfully stimulating conversations.
RIP Leslie and much Love on your new journey ?
Keep Heaven Weird Leslie! Thanks for the memories!
Thanks for being YOU! You always looked better than a bikini than I ever could...
Thanks for always helping to keep Austin Wierd. I had a great time in court with you. You had the tannest butt of anyone I ever met.Fondly-Jennifer F.
RIP Leslie ... we'll miss ya at ROT Rally this year !!!
The first time I ever saw saw Leslie Cochran was in the valet station at Eddie V's, when he slid right next to a I-won't-name-him-here State Representative and his companion --- and made them super, super uncomfortable when he wanted us to take a photo of the three of them. Then, about a week later, while watching a mayoral debate on public access TV, we watched Candidate Cochran challenge the others that because they'd never lived in a cardboard box before, they weren't in tune with the city and its economy. We'd lived here about a month, and quickly recognized that guy on TV as the same one in the thong outside Eddie V's. Austin --- my favorite city in the world --- is just a little less weird today.
RIP Leslie. Austin won't be the same without you. Will miss seeing you around.
R.I.P. Leslie!! You will be missed but never forgotten,Austin will never be the same without you, You were the character, spirit and soul of Austin and how it should always be!! Thank you for being you!! Have fun on the other side & show'em what you're made of!!! <3 A.J.
R.I.P. Leslie!! You will be missed but never forgotten,Austin will never be the same without you, You were the character, spirit and soul of Austin and how it should always be!! Thank you for being you!! Have fun on the other side & show'em what you're made of!!! <3 A.J.
Vios con dios Leslie, you were the best vote I ever made.
I first saw you in the early 90s way up on North Lamar and Braker. You added amazing color to that part of town for sure :). You were a part of the Weird that has made Austin great. We'll miss you and hope you are living large up there.
Godspeed, Leslie...it took courage to live life on your own terms. Glad our paths crossed when I worked downtown.
Thanks for walking around town with shears and clipping my hedges. And for making a yourself well at home at one of my more swanky open houses.
Thank you for the big, warm smiles and wonderful memories, dear sir!

"At Jo's in Peace."
Painted on the morning of Leslie's death.
Farewell Leslie. You will be missed. You are one of the many things I love about the great city of Austin.
Thank you, Leslie, for helping make Austin weird (and wonderful)! You rocked a thong better than a lot of women could. May you rest in peace.
One of my best Austin memories was buying you cognac at Charlies during your 2nd run for Mayor. You looked fetching in your blue flight attendant's outfit. Smarter than many gave you credit for. RIP dude…we'll miss you.
Leslie is an inspiration in that he lived the way he wanted to and never let the man get him down.
Thanks for making my mom uncomfortable Leslie! That was priceless! Rest in peace!
Thank you and RIP Leslie. An era here in Austin has sadly ended. Laurie
I love Austin. Rest in peace.

You you rest in eternal peace....
I remember a visit to Austin when I was in high school in 1999. It was my first encounter with Leslie. It was a deciding factor is taking up residence in this city. Leslie, your relationship with Austin defined our spirit of unity in diversity and helped me find my own place within this community. You will be missed, but we will strive to carry on the spirit of your unique presence.
As I worked near 6th and Congress for many years, I daily discovered Leslie's latest attire. A "specicl treat" was when he'd bend over (away from me) in his thong! He had the best calves, in those heels. He deserves the rest. Peace, at last.
sorry to see you go...you lived your life the way you wanted and made those around you smile. God Bless you!
Leslie, RIP - Thank you for always being you!

Rest In Peace, Leslie. You will be missed and Austin won't be the same without you. Eternal love and peace.
Leslie stopped by my house once and shared a taco with me, my daugher and my friends. We had colorful conversation;)
He will greatly be missed.
